Does anyone out there have any recommendations for concert music that is truly brutal and harsh.

About the most brutal piece I can think of is the Dance of the Adolescents from Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps. It features sections of 32 brutal hammering dissonant chords, played by all the strings, punctuated asymmetrically by a battery of eight (!) french horns. It is overtly sexual and highly violent.

Thrust, thrust, thrust, thrust — Thrust, thrust, thrust, thrust, thrust — Thrust, thrust — Thrust, thrust, thrust, thrust, thrust, thrust — Thrust, thrust, thrust — Thrust, thrust, thrust, thrust — Thrust, thrust, thrust, thrust, thrust — Thrust, thrust, thrust.

The piece starts with a highly lyrical opening played by Bassoon and other woodwinds, called Omens of Spring. The dance of the adolescents starts about at about 3:25.

I saw The Rite Of Spring performed live, ballet and everything, at the Royal Opera House. It was spectacular, absolutely loved it

as for other brutal classical music... L'escalier du diable by Gyorgy Ligeti is pretty brutal. I mean what else can you say about a piece which includes the volume instruction "ffffffff".

Also, everything Galina Ustvolskaya writes is crazy as balls.

I have a feeling that this will be one of my favorite threads. Not sure if I caught the point of this, but...

Around 3:32 it gets so intense it's quite possible, thanks to the not-so-great youtube quality to mistake it for symphonic death metal if you're not paying enough attention.

Y'know, I once went out of my way to track down just such music. Now, I can't think right off of any that hasn't been listed here.

Well, except Walkürenritt. (And yes, I'm aware that Wagner was a douchebag.)

[up] That reminds me, I have it on the same cd as Ives' Three Places in New England, which has some nice loud dissonant bits.

I can't find the piece my teacher was showing me today, but Luigi Nono's stuff is pretty fucking brutal.

Also, another Stravinsky piece. This has one of the best openings I've heard.
