So here are my picks for my favorite fantasy rpgs:

10. World Of Warcraft

9. Neverwinter Nights 2

8. Kingdom Hearts 2

7. Dragon Age

6. Baldur's Gate 2

5. Diablo 2

4. Chrono Trigger

3. Morrowind

2. FF VII

1. Planescape Torment

Now I couldn't fit all the games I wanted to (or was pressured into) on the list, so feel free to nitpick.

Here's my full list if anybody's interested http://www.squidoo.com/top-ten-fantasy-rpgs

No Spiderweb Software entries? No Avernum, Exile, Geneforge?

Also saddened (but not surprised) at the lack of a Wizardry or roguelike entry. Turn-based rpg design is truly a lost art.

You did a good job representing most of the major brands of import, however, although Dragon Age's inclusion seems a tad redundant.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

put baldurs gate 2 at #2 and move everything else back a space and I'd agree with ya.

edit: wait, you listed the original baldurs gate when the second one is way better...

edit2: ah, ok then. Original comment still stands.

Ehmm....

Putting them in a specific order is too much for me, but my favorite RP Gs have to be:

Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VI
Earthbound
The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall
Super Hydlide
Might and Magic: Secret of the Inner Sanctum
one of the Ultima games... though hell if I can choose just one.
And, ummm.... can I have five additional slots?

Dragon Age is on that list, OP. Take it off immediately.

  4. Breath of Fire 3
  5. Robotrek
  6. Shining Force: Resurrection of Dark Dragon
  7. Legend of Mana

[up] Most of them are Fantasy RPGS, if I recall, so they can qualify.

@Dantes: Pick Ultima VII.

As for my Top 10...

Is it okay that I can put Ragnarok Online in my list?

[up][up][up]Actually, I've only played Ultima I-VI, as well as Escape From Mt. Drash, Runes of Virtue and Underworld I.

I'm trying to play the entire series as we speak (the only games missing from my collection are Savage Empire, Ultima IX and the SNES version of Runes of Virtue II), but right now, hell if I can decide which one is the best of them.

Not sure about exact listings, since I don't have ten.

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII
Golden Sun (various)
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

I'll think more on this some other time.

Ruling modern fantasy (VTMB, Earthbound) and anything vaguely cyberpunkish (FFVII, FFVIII [not that I would add it to the list]), in no particular order:

  • Arcanum
  • Planescape: Torment
  • Chrono Trigger/Cross (yeah I'm combining them d/w it)
  • Final Fantasy VI, XII and Tactics
  • The Witcher 2
  • Ultima VII
  • Shining Force I/II
  • Diablo
  • Divine Divinity and Divinity II DKS
  • Gothic I and II

this thread also made me remember I need to play Tactics Ogre.

Do Persona 3 and 4 count as fantasy? I mean, they sure as hell aren't sci-fi.
