Other than for Pyramid Head shoutout value, why didn't he just cut up the shelf? I mean, at least in Real Life the shelving in most supermarkets isn't that tough, especially against someone with a chainsaw and a blaster built into their Swiss-Army Appendage.
Of course, in Real Life there's not product being chained to the shelf, either.
