[up] I love orchestral music. Well, a great deal of orchestral music. What are they playing?

I'm back from BTBAM.

I was as unprepared for the show as I was two weeks ago. The only song they played that I actually knew was "Prequel to the Sequel" and I was singing along after the accordion bit. But god damn if it didn't stop me from going batshit insane at every single song, regardless of how well I knew it. The show ended with songs with the last three tracks on Colors, and the encore was a song from The Silent Circus and "Mordecai" (at least according to the setlist posted afterwards). Whatever they played, holy fucking shit it was glorious.

I shook Tommy's hand twice, got everyone to autograph my ticket and nabbed the tour shirt. My friend also managed to grab the last pick Paul had left.

The local band that was doing the warm-up (Seven Percent Mind Usage) was surprisingly good as well. The show definitely reached its peak in volume when the vocalist and guitarist from Betzefer did a cameo. They were selling their CD for dirt cheap, but we were afraid we wouldn't have money left for the way back home, so...

When BTBAM get here a second time, I'll make sure to do my homework. They got a new fan, that's for sure.

Also, Agalloch are doing a signing event in a store at Tel Aviv the day before the show. I need to get my hands on The Mantle because that store doesn't carry it for a mysterious reason.

[up][up] Messiaen's Turangalila Symphony. I guess it's not as well-known as the Futurama character that was named after it. wink

Music by Tchaikovsky as well, I believe.

I want to see the Sam Roberts Band live, but they're not playing in Montreal for a long time.

There is a free Arcade Fire show here in Montreal later on this month, and I'd love to go and see it.

I am apparently being hooked up with a ticket to see The Olivia Tremor Control tomorrow (well technically today) - basically one guy I know from a long-dead message board and still keep up with is already going, and another guy from the same board who he's kept up with but I haven't is actually in the opening band, Music Tapes *

That's actually extremely intriguing. Who?

Assuming you mean the person who I semi-almost-know that is playing with Music Tapes, his name is Thomas Hughes, and he's also a full-time member of The Spinto Band. Kind of cool that he is now also apparently working with an Elephant 6 band, I don't know when/how that happened.

^^ I feel for ya. Surprisingly enough, Swans actually paid a visit to Israel this spring. Too bad I didn't bother with listening to them (and still don't).

Damn it, must order Agalloch tickets, y so lazy. Two months left, can't wait.

OTC were pretty good, although the live mix could have been better - for what I think of as a "studio" band (lots of effects, sound-collage bits, etc), their songs come off pretty well live. Music Tapes were interesting, but I don't know if I'd necessarily want to go listen to a whole album: Still, how many times in life does one get to see a band play along with a seven foot metronome?

I sort of wished they'd have played more older stuff that I was familiar with, but Deerhoof were pretty cool live. Lots of energy, they play off each other well, and it was fun to see some Audience Participation in "Basket Ball Get Your Groove Back". Also, there was an unexpected rendition of Beck's "Cyanide Breath Mint".

The openers were:

The Toughcats. A trio with drums, acoustic guitar and banjo. Pretty alt-country-ish. Not quite what you'd expect from a Deerhoof opening act, but I liked them and the crowd seemed to be digging it too.

Fat Worm Of Error. A couple of people in this band apparently used to be in Deerhoof, but, um... Not my thing. Enough of not my thing that after 10 minutes or so I opted to go outside for the next half hour and come back when they were done. So I guess it's possible that only their first couple songs were that harsh and then they started doing something different.

We had Corey Glover play the club I "work" at semi-recently, which was kind of cool. No Living Colour material was played, but his solo stuff generally sounded pretty good (if still exactly in that same late 80's/early 90's Alternative Metal vein), he had a pretty talented backing band, and he's still got impressive pipes. He seems like a pretty nice guy too, hung around after the set a bit and chatted with fans and the people working there.

[up][up]I take it you went to Uproar fest?

I guess I never thought to post the concerts I've been to. Here they are:

  • Disturbed with Art of Dying and Egypt Central opening.
  • AC/DC with The Answer opening.
  • Iron Maiden with Dream Theater opening.
  • Uproar Festival headlined by Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold and Stone Sour, co-headlined by Halestorm and Hellyeah, and openers Hail the Villain and New Medicine.
  • Three Days Grace with My Darkest Days opening.
  • Slayer and Rob Zombie with Exodus opening.

I'm going to do what I can to get to Judas Priest.

Bands I've seen this year who you may have actually heard of:

Everyone else I can think of, though I'm sure there's more (again, disregarding local bands no one knows):

  • The Meat Puppets
  • The Vaselines
  • Devo
  • Camper Van Beethoven (twice)
  • Cracker (co-headlining with Camper Van Beethoven)
  • Melvins (one was a regular concert promoting Nude With Boots and the other was an "Anniversary Show" where they started by playing their early Hardcore Punk songs, then played various stuff from throughout their career before finally playing all of Houdini).
  • AC Newman
  • Anal Cunt
  • Mastodon
  • Secret Chiefs 3
  • The Butthole Surfers
  • They Might Be Giants (at least 4 times counting free shows)
  • The Breeders
  • Electric Six
  • The Jesus Lizard
  • Spoon (free outdoor show again)
  • Julia Nunes
  • Fucked Up
  • The Lemonheads (twice - one where they played all of It's A Shame About Ray, then a lot of other stuff because that's a pretty short album, and one that was just a short outdoor thing)
  • The Black Keys
  • Shudder To Think
  • Dillinger Escape Plan
  • Sunset Rubdown
  • Fantomas
  • Melt-Banana
  • Micachu & The Shapes
  • The Spinto Band
  • Bishop Allen
  • Aerosmith (first "real" concert ever)

[up] Pretty great. Actually, I kinda owe my SC3 fandom to seeing them live - i had an urge to go out to a show of some kind, I knew there was a Mr. Bungle connection, and what I heard when I looked them up sounded interesting. I bought Book Of Horizons at the show and got Trey Spruance to "sign" (more like "draw some cryptic symbol on") a poster they were giving out with it.

I forgot, I actually saw them twice - both times they sounded great, but the second time they had much more of a tendency to switch around instruments or have certain members come in for a song or two, then leave the stage again. Which on the one hand was kind of interesting, but on the other hand can be a little frustrating if you know you won't be able to get home if you stay the whole show and just want to hear as many songs as you can.

Regrettably I missed out on a chance to see the Ulster Orchestra playing a selection of Broadway hits, but I'm sure there will be future opportunities.

Just came back from Priest. Best concert ever (Halford can still hit those stadium-filling high notes). The only bad part was him not singing Breaking the Law at all, with the band just playing the song without vocals (I don't think many in the audience knew the words, or if they did, were the minority).

Thin Lizzy were alright, but I can honestly say I didn't see a single one of their shirts among the crowd. They got the best reception for The Boys are Back in Town. Black Label Society shirts took up about a quarter of the audience (from what I could tell). BLS lived up to their reputation of being a great live act (Wylde played a 5-minute guitar solo half way through).

Concerts I've Seen:

  • Shania Twain (The first concert to me. I had been to a few when I was a younger child, but here it was all about the music. It was pretty good, she sounds great live.)

  • Trans Siberian Orchestra (My second concert. The instramentals were pretty fantastic, as was the light show. When those stopped and the singers stepped out to sing vocal focused songs I remember feeling kinda bored. It might not be for others, but it was a good concert brought down by some boring blocks.)

  • The Who (Third Concert and 2nd favorite. It would probably be my favorite concert if I had gone and seen it at a later age. I didn't care and appreciate about them as much as I do now. Either way, it's still my second favorite concert. Most memorable song: Baba O' Riley)

  • Earth Wind And Fire & Chicago (This was a really nice treat. Cheap and a lot of bang for that buck! EWF we're very energetic and great to watch and listen to. Chicago was also great, but they put a few too many 80's tunes in they're setlist. When they joined together however, they kicked all kinds of ass! I will never forget they're joined performance of "25 And 6 to 4".)

  • Jethro Tull (This year I decided to start attending more concerts. This was one of them. A very enjoyable concert, even though Ian's voice was nothing like it used to be (although much better then the horror stories). Most Memorable Song: About 15 or so minutes of Thick As A Brick)

  • Rush (Ohmygoodness. This is head over heals my favorite concert I've seen. The energy of the crowd was palatable, it sounded fantastic, all three were just... fantastic! The setlist was well constructed. The whole band was incredibly charismatic and radiated energy... I mean, it was just fantastic. I loved it. Most Memorable Song: The Camera Eye)

  • Pat Benetar (My most recent concert at Spirit Mountain Casino. I got my album of their greatest hits signed and all there is to say is she is even better live. If you get the chance, go see! Most Memorable song: Hell Is For Children

So guys, I hope you liked my post! I hope it wasn't to boring.

Going to a Halloween concert tonight. No one you've ever heard of *

, and in fact other than the headliner and one other band, no one I've ever heard of. The Creator Couple behind Darling Pet Munkee seem to have pretty good taste in other local music though, so it should be good.
