Well, it took between ten and twenty minutes to organize everything, but I think I have an answer. I must say, this was a wonderful test of mental aptitude. Even if it turns out that my guess is faulty, this was a nice experience, and I applaude you for it.
The German has the fish.
Just a nitpick: that's a straight-up logic puzzle, not a lateral thinking puzzle.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.There is no fish. The fifth man has a pet gerbil.
The Revolution Will Not Be Tropeable@Endark Culi: You are correct.
I'm impressed. it took me ;;two hours'' first time I heard it to work out (and even then I ended up cheating and had to use spreadsheet).

hashtagsarestupidAren't you supposed to solve this kind of puzzles with a spreadsheet?
I will admit, a sheet of paper was used when I was working out the answer, mainly because trying to remember everything would only give me headaches. As for why I don't think it took long to make my guess, once I deduced that the center house could only have been green or red, and that the green house's owner already had a favourite drink, the rest just slowly fell into place.

As in the windows program. Yes and pen and paper is fine but using a computer seem like cheating, even if it's only to save doubling back on yourself.
Yeah your best bet I find is to establish the houses order then color then individual. The rest falls into place.

Lateral thinking puzzle time! Please use spoilers ([[spoiler:text]) when you give your answer.
There are 5 houses in 5 different colors. In each house lives a person with a different nationality. The 5 owners drink a certain type of beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigar, and keep a certain pet. No owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of cigar, or drink the same beverage.
The question is: Who owns the fish?
