I can deal with it if they do a good job. Like I can deal with Keifer Sutherland being Big Boss if he's got the chops for it, or I can deal with some guy I've never heard of before being Solid Snake as long as he doesn't "Man of Steel" the movie.

Solid Snake carries a lot of baggage, and he occasionally lets people in to lighten the load, but to my understanding he keeps it to himself while he completes his mission unless it leaks out under extreme pressure. We don't need emotionally troubled pretty white boy staring down at his feet at every crushing defeat, we need the baggage-carrying Determinator who's difficult with people and genuinely hurt inside, but not blatantly sorry for himself due to his tough life choices or more hero than man.

I don't know if I'm making sense, I just don't want Sony making Metal Gear Solid like Man of Steel. In any capacity.

[up]You really aren't making sense. Particularly with the comparison to Man Of Steel.

For starters, your statement about "every crushing defeat" really doesn't makes sense, given that Clark in that movie only really did that at the end after the neck-snap scene. Everytime besides that was because he was a young child.

And besides, you say Snake needs to be willing to let other people in his life to help carry his burden... well, what do you think Clark did in the movie? Him chatting with Lois in the interrogation room, him talking with that priest, all of his scenes with his mother, aren't they all exactly that? Talking with other people and letting their emotional support help him?

Also, out of curiosity.... what the heck was up with bringing up Sony and Mo S on the same sentence? Since the people who were involved with Mo S were working for Warner Bros, and Sony had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Fair enough.

I was mostly thinking about how bad Man of Steel was as an adaptation (in my own opinion, of course), and when it comes to Hollywood doing reboots or adaptations, it seems like they throw away elements that made the original or more iconic works as iconic as they are. Man of Steel was kinda like that for me, with the jump-cuts and the lack of chemistry between the leads and the Sadistic Choice at the end - it was popcorn flick stuff.

I was just spouting off whatever was on my mind, which was "I hope Metal Gear Solid doesn't go the way of Man of Steel, or Doom, or pretty much any failed/mediocre adaptation of a popular thing". Man of Steel being the first thing to come into my mind, and the subsequent rubbish being attributed to said movie.

I mean, if I'm going to experience the first game for the first time, I don't want to have to watch a Hollywood steamer that overbalances the main character between too sentimental and too much of a hardass for the contrast to be palatable. Not that MoS is too bad in that department, but it wouldn't be the first time a movie watered down a character to their base characteristics and lost the consumer's interest in their development.

TL;DR - Man of Steel was the first thing that came into my head, and though it does persist I was thinking of a wider scope of meh adaptations which I ended up attributing directly to Man of Steel. It was more or less a 30-second post about the first thing that came to mind.

A better example would probably be Metal Gear going the way of the Dragonball movie.

A worse example would be that they have Kiefer Sutherland as Solid Snake, which isn't bad per se...but then because they blew their money getting Kief on, they have Sam Riegel as Otacon and not Christopher Randolph.

Imagine Metal Gear Solid with Tekken-quality costumes.

Seriously, look at this bullshit.

[up]I'm not even sure who the heck they are supposed to be....

Creepy thing, but my dentist looks eerily similar to Otacon without the glasses. He's got the hair-do right.

lol kotaku

I'd normally be inclined to not believe Kojima but the way Konami's been biting his head off in a comical fashion is...well.

Don't play around with the emotions of Silent Hill fans like that.

They've suffered enough.

If it really is the last MGS, it isn't really that bad. Kojima has done something great.

Fallout 2? More like Fallout 2 bad.

I'm more worried about the fate of Silent Hills, to be perfectly honest.

I am mostly wondering what Yahtzee is gonna think of it, considering he has blasted almost every Silent Hill game made after 4.

So far, PT seems pretty good, I sez. I'd avoid saying that it's the "scariest game of the century" before it comes out tho.

The Silent Hill series has been through a rough time.

Kojima's weird as hell, he's kinda what the series needed.

And this happens and it's sorta par for the course. But also really disappointing.

Basically, this.

Fan podcast.

Are there really a lot of problems going on within Konami? It's starting to make waves and some people are saying that these conflicts could be the reason why they're pretty much nothing but Metal Gear nowadays despite their long and storied history with other franchises.

I just started playing Portable Ops. Just finished the Prison mission.

...If the controls are like this the whole game, I'm not looking forward to the mandatory boss fights.

Update: I'm enjoying the game a bit more now. I've been kidnapping soldiers left and right - I'm sure that this game's enemy kidnapping mechanic isn't as good as Peace Walker's, but I've been having great fun with it so far.

I really wish I hadn't spoiled myself on some of the plot points, because I'm beginning to get invested in this game. A villain with the power of propaganda-based brainwashing? That's kickass. I really like spreading through the levels with my unit and placing them around the map, then getting Snake to knock the guards out and getting the other unit members to take the soldiers to the truck. It's a bit addictive.

The question of whether or not Silent Hills will come out doesn't seem as pertinent as if it'll be any good now. If Kojima and Koji Pro are leaving then really the only question is if Del Toro will stay on the project and in what role. Hell, it's not even clear what role he played in PT to begin with.

I think Portable Ops's plot is really underappreciated.

As is its level design.

If it just wasn't for the stupid kidnapping and "you died of hunger" system...

MPO's level design is pretty interesting, but it doesn't seem very "Metal Gear". Like it doesn't feel like any of the previous games, which is interesting and cool but also a bit disorienting and a little bit disappointing.

I do love the kidnapping though. Actually, quick question - if you pile soldiers up outside a waiting comrade's box and call in the abduction, do they all get taken individually or does the process take all of them but only count one of them? Because I know they all disappear if they're all in the same vicinity, but I'm not sure if they all get picked up.

It's been a while since I last played, but I'm pretty sure you get all of them.

Oh, I also think being able to play with multiple characters is great, especially when you use your dude to get past a similarly uniformed enemy and then stab'em in the back so your other characters can get through.

It's hard not to compare this game to Peace Walker, but I think I'm in the minority that likes MPO more. Even though I have played through those levels a shitton more, none of PW's levels stuck with me. I can at least remember MPO's.

It might have something to do with it's stealth not being brain-dead easy.

I mostly remember the bosses from Peace Walker- Vehicles were pure evil, the AI weapons were a little exasperating at times but a lot more enjoyable.

And the Pooyan Missions, of course.

I sure said that!
