I am sincerely hoping "the thing" was not ZOE 3. Because if that got cancelled, that would majorly suck.

Sakamoto demands an explanation for this shit.

I think the story is that he tried to make MGS 2 as mind-fuck bad as possible to get people to NOT want another sequel. He failed. Hard.

And it says something when you're trying to fuck up and wind up making one of the best games on the PS 2.

Actually, he was trying to close up all loose ends. He just didn't get to due to time constraints, resulting in... the current ending.

The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.

Time constraints AND 9/11. A great deal of the end cut-scenes had to be cut out due to the timing of the release.

Right, that too. It's amazing the game is as coherent as it is. Heck, how did Fatman make it in?

Well, they did have a rerelease with loads and loads of extra stuff... just nothing added back in about the original game.

Same here.
Hell, I'd buy a PS 3 if they made a MGS collection. With appropriate graphics upgrades and cinematic tweaks, of course.

[up]Metal Gear Skateboarding was unusually awesome, though clunky control-wise.

I'm pretty sure Kojima has stated that he kept (keeps?) trying to end the series with one game, but than ends up wanting to make another. After making MGS 2, he eventually wanted to make MGS 3, and after that he eventually wanted to make MGS 4, and after *that* he eventually wanted to make Peace Walker. Of course he was probably also pressured.

Edit: However with MGS 4, he pretty much set it up so that he wouldn't be seduced into making yet another sequel.

I'm pretty sure it was the fans that kept wanting him to make more is what he said, though I can see how he always misses a few strings that he would like to tie up.

I have a feeling its more about fan and executive demand, rather than what Kojima actually wants.
Don't get me wrong, I love MGS deeply, but if Kojima wants to work on something else, let him.
Hell, I want to see what new IPs he can come up with or what old ones he can revitalize'

Actually, it's the other way around. Most of the loose ends in MGS 2 were never supposed to be tied up. That was one of the themes of the game.

What with the whole 'was it training Raiden... or the player?' thing? Yeah totally. I'm sure The Patriots'

were meant to be a permanent mystery too. Kinda wish they stayed that way. MGS4 kinda ruined that for me...

Eh, that's the thing. Kojima never quite got around to properly leaving threads untied in that game too. The generally ending was supposed to point out in some mysterious direction with Raiden at least having some sense of purpose in what he must do to find those answers but... well, let's just say that the final battle was supposed to be between Team Raiden Snake and Team Ocelot Solidus. That on its own (with Ocelot dying) would have changed EVERYTHING.

Nah, the bigger mind-fuck in the MGS series was the Metal Gear Ghost Babel tie-in to MGS 2's VR Training stories. It got partially smudged between games ( MGGB refers to the Outer Heaven incident regularly and takes place in the rebuilt fortress from Metal Gear, but Raiden has clearly never heard of it in MGS 2), but is still fun because, hey, Foreshadowing.

And so long as we're in the clear on this: Kudzu Plot or not, I enjoyed MGS 2 a lot more than some of the other games in the series. So, probably, have you =)

Wasn't Ghost Babel an alternate continuity?

Personally, I have yet to play a Metal Gear game I didn't like. I came close to it with Solid 3, but on the second go when I understood the revised game mechanics and CQC system a lot more, it was a lot more fun.

And now I'm on Portable Ops, which has gotten me addicted to knocking people out and dragging them to trucks (and I'm sure that quote could never be taken out of context).

It was, but the New Game Plus heavily implies that it is actually Raiden's VR training. Peace Walker does away with the trucks and is generally seven times better than Portable Ops. Its only real weakness is the lack of single-person co-op - you go into all missions alone if you play single-player.

Story-wise, Portable Ops is definitely the worst of the canonical games. It's also the one canonical game which Kojima didn't have much to do with, so that probably explains it. (I hope this doesn't mean Rising will suck...)

Yeah, so far Portable Ops isn't very interesting plot-wise. Probably why (so I've heard) the later games don't reference it much. It seems like there was a lot less mind-fuckery going on back in Big Boss' day.

But I love that truck.

[up]It's not referenced except for one (1) Take That!, yes, but there's a lot of mind-fuckery in Peace Walker. Big Boss's entourage is as fucked up as you'd expect it to be from the guy who assembles the psycho Quirky Miniboss Squad we eventually get to pound into oblivion in MG 1 and 2 and MGS 1 =)

Am I the only one who enjoyed Metal Gear Solid 2?

(Need to play 3 and 4... heck, I've already gone and bought Peace Walker, games not gonna make a lot of sense without 3... and there was one before Peace Walker but after 3, wasn't there?)

The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.

[up]It's called Portable Ops, the one we're discussing right above your post. And no, I like MGS 2 plenty fine =) And Peace Walker recaps enough bits of MGS 3 so that you won't be able to not enjoy it, but you WILL enjoy it more if you did play it or at least watch the movified version of the cutscenes. Portable Ops, on the other hand, has been retconned out, so you're not missing out anything (except a different gameplay mechanic concerning your recruitables) for it.
