Yeah, it's a pun, I get it. It's still a terrible way to name a trope. I suggest using the redirect (back seat sex) as the main title. If we really, really need a pun we could go with automobile erotica or car-nal something.

This implies, quite correctly, that my mind is dark and damp and full of tiny translucent fish.

So you haven't checked the wicks for misuse?

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Judging by a cursory scan of the wicks and its usage counts (found in 130 articles, and has brought 81 people to the wiki), I don't see any apparent misuse.

You have to have more substance than "I don't like the name". That doesn't mean anything if it's being used properly and people understand what it means in relation to the trope.

I dislike the name because auto erotica is an existing term that has practically nothing to do with the trope. It's like, I don't know, making a trope about unwanted vegetation in sewer systems and naming it 'Pipe Weed'. It makes no sense.
Also, It's not even a good pun. I think most people know the following, but I'll explain it anyway: The Latin word 'Auto' means self. Auto Erotica therefore means 'Self Erotica'. 'Auto' as a term for car comes from 'Auto Mobile', i.e. 'Self Propelling'. This means that the so-called pun consists of switching the Latin word for 'Self' with the Latin word for 'Self'. Well, har har har.

"Auto-erotic asphyxiation" (if that's the term you're referring to) is not the same as "sex in cars". The trope name does a good job of summarizing its point.

While I would agree that the pun may be a bit on the lame side, it still doesn't convince me. Again, you have to show that there's enough evidence that the name is being misused to support a rename. As it stands, the usage counts and wicks show that everyone who sees it understands what it means.

Yeah, I don't mind having punny trope titles, but this one is horrible, not to mention confusing. Concur with renaming.

Well there aren't that many wicks or inbounds, so lack of misuse isn't quite enough to lock this against renaming.

We should consider not only misuse by tropers, but also potential confusion, misunderstandings, general headache and potential for future misuse.

Clear > witty.

And this one isn't even witty, it's a lame joke that goes directly at clarity's expense.

And there are plenty of more accurate names that would still be clever. I'm just unfortunately too tired to think of any right now.

Hm... How many puns can we make about sex in a car?

...

The only thing I can come up with is Pleather Pleasure. Bad name.

Too bad the Billy Ocean song "Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car" is long, as that would make a good name.

It wouldn't be the first time we hijacked a pre-existing term for the sake of a pun. Most of the Elemental Powers have names like Shock and Awe and Playing with Fire, for example. So there's precedent. I don't really have a problem with doing that, in general, provided that the pre-existing term isn't something we need to trope. (Brain Drain, for example, got hijacked for the pre-existing term—which is hardly a trope at all—when it would have made a great title for Phlebotinum-Induced Stupidity.)

That being said, this one does sound less like "having sex in a car" and more like some kind of weird fetish for cars.

That was my initial reaction to the name, too. Otherwise, I don't think the name is that bad. Has anyone mistaken this trope for being about masturbation?

I've made the mistake, but only when it's been potholed as Autoerotica instead of Auto Erotica.

Potholing it that way is more misleading.

I'm not feeling strongly one way or another, but Artistic Platypus has a point. Punning common phrases as a whole is one thing, technical terms quite another.

The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman.

Wik check of 20 wiks checking every third wik. :

Totals: 5 X Just X, 2 don't count, 1 obviously incorrect, 2 unclear, 10 clearly correct.

Provable misuse 5%. Possible misuse 44%. This is why I hate X Just X.

Not that it matters much, but I can add that the Carnivale example is correct, too.

As I said, I think the redirect 'Back Seat Sex' works as a trope name. If we desperately need a pun, we could go with 'Automobile Erotica' or something like 'Car-nal Pleasures'

Concur with renaming to Back Seat Sex (and possibly redirect Auto Erotica to A Date With Rosie Palms).

There's only 5% misuse. It's not enough to justify a rename. The current name is working.

[up] Yes, yes it does. We don't change names if they're working because someone likes a different name better. That's not a reason to rename. According to Everything You Wanted To Know About Changing Names, we should lock this thread and leave the name alone.

But it's not about people disliking the name, it's about the name being confusing (because "autoerotic" means "masturbation", not "sex in a car"). In other words, while technically "the name is a term already in use in the world" (as stated on Da Rules), the name is a term that means something entirely different than the trope does.

Clear names are better than punny names.
