I think part of it is that "hipster" has in some circles become shorthand for "people I dislike."

I honestly couldn't tell you, though. In regards to the stereotypical PBR/indie music/flannel type hipster, I've met some who are complete doucheholes and some who are really nice people.

I tend to use the term "hipster" as a translation for "backpfeifengesicht". It's not completely accurate, but it works for me.

Most people seem to use the word "hipster" to mean "a pretentious douchebag". If you like things that are obscure but you're not a douchebag about it, you're not a hipster.

That's how it is far as I can tell, at least.
