My very first one is taken from the old Nintendo game Nightshade, a little known, but very fun, game. You can see a review of it here.
Usually, I'm not a fan of constantly switching avatars, but I felt inspired to start gathering other avatars, as long as they all keep to the theme of trenchcoats and fedoras. The rest are scrounged through Google image searches.
Don't take life too seriously. It's only a temporary situation.Either scavenged from google image search or meanspirited.net, and maybe one or two cropped from some pictures of mine.*

On a side-note, you can use TinEye on people's avatars to (hopefully) find where they came from.
Danbooru mostly.

I made mine using MS Paint, I think. (Since this thread is a few years old, I could revive this in a new thread if anyone wants it.)

If you are not very careful, your possessions will posses you- Google Image Search
- Google Books
- DVD/VHS/LD screen grabs
- Good ol’ PRTSC
Google Image Search.
I like to keep my audience riveted.Google Image Search, deviantart, tumblr, and many other sites can provide you art to make into avatars or avatars themselves.
If you want to make an avatar just type search for a avatar making site or a site that resizes images (they usually have a option to make avatars or you can crop and resize a image to make one).
For example you can use imgur to crop and modify images.
A screencap from the charmingly named short film, I Killed My Lesbian Wife, Hung Her on a Meat Hook, and Now I Have a Three Picture Deal at Disney, Ben Affleck's directoral debut.
The derp face amused me a bit more than it probably should have and, frankly, is just about the only thing I remember from it.
I got it in a Secret Santa trade when I mentioned that I liked Homestuck. I don't anymore, but it's a nice gift. I appreciate it. I would use the one I got in THIS Secret Santa from December 2015, but that one's a large comic, so...
"If you spend all your heart / On something that has died / You are not alive and that can't be a life"I took mine from somewhere after I went through three separate Sorting House thingies on the internet which all put me in House Slytherin - and stopped arguing with myself about it.
Mine is from Corbis, Xbox live gamer picture pack simply named "Ninja." There's a different pose of him jumping so it might be fun to exchange the two from time to time.
Magic.
simple as- Twilight, Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Big Mac, and ponified me were drawn by yours truly. Valozzy drew the pointy version of the last one, and Ichigo Pocky Chama shared me the CMC one. The rest were taken from GIS.
- The Disney/Pixar and Pokémon avvies were taken from their respective wikis, except for shiny Metagross, which was from serebii.net.

"Rarity, are you okay? We gotta get you and your friends outta here soon!"Find a pic that I like, I ask the artist if it's okay to use it as an Avatar, if I can find the artist that is, then I resize and crop as necessary. Sometimes I get really worried about sharing some avatars, because well, they're not really mine, but really unless the artist somehow comes to this forum, finds me and tells me to delete my avatars and stop sharing I don't worry. And you'd be surprised how many artist appreciate being told you want to use their pic. If it's official art, I don't care I'll just use the picture without asking. Also if the person is from a nonenglish speaking country.
All of my avatars depicting plushies and dogs, and the Scribblenauts one, are my own work. The rest are obviously from the internet, and depict stuff I've been interested in.
"Jack, you have debauched my sloth."
Most of mine lately have been screencaps from My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic, that I've simply just Print-Screen'd while watching it on YouTube.
Alternatively, I use avatars sent to me by other users.
