I was with a couple coworkers today and they were discussing the new Lady Gaga song, and we were commenting on our sexualities. They were all born gay/trans/bi and when I said I was originally straight but wanted something else instead, they said I was a fauxmosexual/stage lesbian.

Hmph. So, if you are not born into your sexuality, does that mean it does not count? I am assuming so. Most other people I know go through phases where they think they are gay, come out of the closet, but eventually drop it after high-school/college.

They were just being elitist asses, from the sound of it.

To me that attitude sounds like some fandom's telling people "well you aren't TRUE fans" or whatever.

Well, I think orientation is none of anybody's damn business and I'll bang whoever I damn well please, for whatever reason.

I suppose what I mean to say is that I don't care much for labels, mostly because I can't really predict what I would/wouldn't be willing to bang. Schrodinger's orientation?

My sexual preferences vary greatly. I seem to go through phases though I always keep the primary "Is willing to bang any gender/sex". As a child for example my liking for people other than boys (note I said boys and not males) was very small. The idea that people with fluid and changing orientations are fake bothers me. Yes many of these people are indeed fake ass fucks, but many are not. Some just quite honestly shift.

Then again I also resent the idea that sexual orientation is a never changing label that you must fit squarely into.

[up][up]Oh, I'm sure they were perfectly serious. These sorts of fags seem to LIVE on this "Faggy-er than thou" mentality that sucks the life out of everyone around them who doesn't meet their "fabulous" standards.

They wouldn't like me then, I'm a gay man who listens to thrash metal and can't stand Lady Gaga.

In fact, I'm listening to an album titled Speed Metal Satan right now. If that's not defying the stereotype I don't know what is.

Oh my.

Well, homosexuality has been frequently equated with race in recent years, which means that someone saying that they have decided to be gay, lesbian, or whatever else is going to get automatically translated as "I want to be black". And as we all know, humans can't change color. You don't wake up and decide "I'd like to be blue today" (although this would be really awesome).

Anyone deciding to be homosexual or even just bi is going to get some funny looks, or else they will be called "gay all along".

I don't know bro, my roomate is bi and is a total metalhead.

And yet I'm the dude in the house who likes Lady Gaga, and I'm straight. So fuck labels.

Lady Ga Ga is too slow for me (Though I still mostly listen to dance music):

@ OP: What was your experience like? I can safely say that I was, at one point, attracted to a girl and was (Or at least thought I was) straight. I was not attracted to men at all. I ran into the same girl again recently, tried (out of idle curiosity) thinking about doing her and I nearly lost my lunch.

@OP: You don't think there's any chance you were born what you are, and just didn't realise it until later, for whatever reason? Many lesbians come out after they've been with men, or even married to one. Even if that isn't you, it's something to think about.

Even if that isn't the case, people realise things at different times. I thought I was a lesbian when I was a kid (like 12-16ish) and realised mid-way through highschool that I was bi. Deciding that I was okay with that was much, much harder than when I decided to identify as a lesbian.

Both. However, even at 16, no one I knew gave a shit. They were happy I was happy with my boyfriend(s).

Anyone who would say otherwise is a pretty terrible friend, imo.

When I first became bisexual, a bunch of people thought I was just realising I was bi all along rather than an actual change in orientation. That said, I'm sure orientations can be a very fluid thing, as it's something I have some personal experience in.

Orientation has been very fluid for me for the past fuckin'... well since puberty. It's changed from IN ORDER, bisexual (12), straight (13-14), gay (15-18), bisexual AGAIN (18), gay (18-19) and now thinking I'm bisexual but like men more (so like somewhere between 4 and 5 on the Kinsey scale). So no, not really a "fauxmosexual."

On the topic of music tastes I love all types of music and my favorite genre is thrash, but my tastes are all over the place (just look at my Troper page.)

Why does a large percentage of the GLBT community seem to think they need to parade their sexuality around by calling people out as "not gay enough" or "fakers".

Seems really silly to me, it's like how I roll my eyes when people who are really into music always talk about "real metal" and really caring way too much about what type of genre a band refers to itself as, and take offense when other people state that they like bands that the individual in question does not.

Seems kind of stupid to me.

It's really stupid, Barkey and I wanted to punch the girls in my school's GSA in the face for shit like that. It showed most often in their biphobia. Until they learned that the world is a sexual buffet for me. Then they cut it out.

Labels are evil. Also, misleading and sometimes played for laughs. I know a girl who self-identifies as heterosexual, yet she's had sex with more girls than I ever did, and even though she's married now (to a dude, if you wanna know), it's still gonna be a while till (if ever) I catch up.

Also, on the second subject: I never thought of music tastes as an indicator for sexual orientation, or vice versa. Don't know any gay guys IRL, but gay girls that I know run the whole spectrum of musical preferences across all the genres imaginable. Except jazz, for some reason. Yes, I admit it, I have no lesbian friends who listen to jazz =)

I feel like it should be important to note that homosexuality is caused by certain variations of the brain. Being gay is not a choice, it just is. So saying that you are gay because 'you wanted something else' does sound a lot like 'I want to be black'.

I don't know the exact sexuality of TC, but I do suspect that many gay people feel somewhat hurt by the mentality expressed by the TC at that moment.
