I'm glad that doing quests no longer means you are overleveled.

Blades being stuck to a Driver is a bummer.

Both of these guys look pretty good. Fantastical but not too excessive or clashing with the rest of the art.

Design notes with facial emotion sketches of Rex and Pyra. Translations here.

Behind the story development with screenwriter Yuichiro Takeda.

Hi everyone, nice to meet you! Or perhaps I should be saying thank you for your continued support!

I’m Yuichiro Takeda. I worked as a screenwriter for Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles X, and continued in that role for Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

If I were to introduce Xenoblade Chronicles 2 from my perspective as part of the scenario team, I would say that this story has the most Director Tetsuya Takahashi flair to date.

For this script, Director Takahashi provided us with a rich plot right from the start, and Kazuho Hyodo and I split the writing in half. I worked on the even numbered chapters while Mr. Hyodo worked on the odd numbered chapters. At the same time, Director Takahashi was writing the whole story himself. Then, the three of us all came together when we had our scripts. We built the script by leveraging our unique personalities and adding in corrections and revisions from Director Takahashi. This is very similar to the screenplay technique used for movies.

I think that the story of this game will be the ultimate experience for fans of Director Takahashi. But that’s not to say that I was cutting corners on my end! While writing the screenplay, I was able to dive into the world of Alrest thanks to Saito Masatsugu, who kept designing more and more interesting characters.

My personal favorite is the story about Tora and Poppi in chapter 4. I love robots and I feel like this story fully reflects my infatuation with the Nopon. I hope that you all like it too.

Though this is always the case, the screenplay is completed years before the software is released, so by the time I actually get to play it, I embark on the adventure just like every other fan. I can’t wait to explore Alrest with all of you very soon!

Also, been hearing some places (specifically China, but I thought I heard New York as well) have broken street date.

Ooooh! Only 6 days until release!

It's snuck up on me.

Until then I think I'll be attempting to finishing the other two games I'm currently playing (Ultra Moon and Nier: Automata).

Sidenote: Has there been any indications we'll need storage to download anything like data packs in XBX?

If that's the case I should probably pick up a micro SD for my Switch while the sales are still on.

I was thinking about getting the controller.

But its like $110. And I already have a regular one that only cost $70 AUD or something.

Plus I'm already paying $130 for the special edition. Which I'm only doing because Xenoblade <3

I'm getting a Pro Controller, but I'm not 100% sold on the Xenoblade version. Want one though!

So what are we most looking forward to? I want to know the twists and story-based sidequests, I loved them in 1 and X.

My hopes:

  • Likeable villains, ie nothing like the Ganglion.
  • Choices that matter like in X.
  • No ambush enemies, or at least not nearly as many as in X.
  • Good Nopon, and maybe other interesting sapient species.
  • A mix of ranged and melee combat; no weapon forcing (I think it's already confirmed to be so).
  • A good flow of enemy levels in relation to stage/story progression.
  • A clear idea of what level each quest has in mind.

Also, is Kevin McKidd (Soap Mactavish) part of the game's English cast? Probably not, but would be hilarious if so.

I don't think villains need to be likeable, just logical. The Ganglion never had enough screen time to reach that point in the main story, and the side story Ganglion were doing their own things.

I don't think we know anyone on the English cast list yet. Something to look forward to I guess. I'm just hoping they bring back Howden as this game's Zanza now...

The problem with X's villain is they never get It's Personal. The heroes are just "oh hey, Ganglion, we fight, I guess." Where as Shulk and co. scream bloody revenge at Metal Face and Xord.

Yeah, X's antagonists were just kinda... there. Oh, hi goetia, hi riesz, hi dagahn, hi luxaar, gimme a sec to start unlimited overdrive, bye you all. I felt nothing toward any of them at any point (aside maybe calling them idiots) because they didn't had any ideals I could respect, no backstory I could at least acknowledge and say "shit, those guys went through some tough stuff", no redeeming features to make them less unidimensional, and weren't doing anything heinous enough to make me want to ram them through the nearest wall because they deserved it.

Well, aside Lao .

I felt more emotions towards some sidequests villains like Alex or the antagonists of hope's and murderess stories than any of the main antagonists combined. Which is a shame since this game has so many engaging characters in any other section that isn't "story-related antagonists".

Yeah, basically the Ganglion members were all Smug Snakes without any actual onscreen achievements/atrocities to back up their ego, and their Knight Templar personalities only made them more unlikable. Even the most monstrous villains of Bionis & Mechonis were far more likeable because they actually did stuff.

  • Metal Face/Mumkhar had backstabbing Dunban, trashing up Colony 9, putting Fiora into near-death, actually killing Emperor Sorean, and generally disobeying orders.

  • Dickson had the achievement of fooling literally the entire universe as The Mole and manipulated everyone into renewing Zanza's reign of terror.

  • Lorrithia managed to infiltrate the entirety of Alcamoth and developed the science to unleash the Telethia.

  • Zanza was an actual Mad God. Nothing much more to say there.

It also helps that said villains had a glorious coup de grace at the end, while the Ganglion only had more or less offscreen/disappointing Gory Discretion Shots.

How to fix Goetia in one easy step: give everything Ryyz does to Goetia, cut Dagahn.

How to fix the Ganglion: put a few of the normal missions involving Ganglion attacks on NLA into the main quest and have Luxxar overseeing/interacting with the main party a la ME Sovereign. Those BLADE guys being hunted in...Noctilum, I think it was? Main mission, Goetia is involved. Definians? Also a main mission, Luxxar is receiving reports. Etc etc.

Basically gib screentime and apply the law of conservation of detail. There don't need to be six or seven people LIKE Goetia when she's still there.
