But you eventually had to admit it sucked?

I've just had this exact experience with Folklore.

Sonic And The Black Knight.

Considering it was a sequel to Secret Rings, I really wanted to like it too. It still leaves a bad taste in my mouth just thinking about it...

Tom Clancy's HAWX 2. I kept making all these little observations, then throughout the gameplay was repeating "It'll get better. It'll get better." It didn't. I actually stopped playing it because of all the other stuff they put into it that we didn't really need.

Unnecessary.

The very topic of this thread concerns a subjective matter; I think it would be fair to say the forum posters here are smart enough to understand that one's mileage will vary in these sort of things. That said, it wouldn't hurt to actually explain the reason(s) behind your particular game choice(s), if only to keep this thread from turning into yet another dime-a-dozen complaint thread.

Okay...

Resident Evil 4. Atmosphere: fine. Level design: fine. Pacing: fine. Enemies: fine. But I cannot stand the archaic controls. I feel crippled not being able to sidestep or even duck to dodge some lazily-lobbed hatchet, especially after watching Leon do some super-cool backflips in the cutscene right before. Every time I get my head chopped off by a scythe thrown at neck level, I want to shout, "Move your f'ing head Leon! (smack) See? If you'd just moved your head maybe this wouldn't have happened, you idiot! Sheesh, I could have dodged that thing..."

I feel like they really missed an opportunity by putting you in the shoes of an action hero but not letting you use any of his moves during gameplay outside of quicktime events. That, and the story is full of Fridge Logic holes and one-dimensional characters.

But even so, I don't hate Leon or even Ashley, so I would have been fine with it if the gameplay were halfway intuitive. There's no other game with RE4's perfect pitch of atmosphere and pacing, so sometimes I get a craving for that certain flavor that only RE4 can satisfy; but once I actually get to playing it, it's not long before the frustration starts to set in from Leon's extremely restricted moves. It's a real shame.

Just a few: Chrono Cross, Kingdom Hearts, Mario Kart Double Dash, Intelligent Qube and Metal Man X6.

I'd go into my reasons but I fear it would turn this into Complaining About Shows You Dont Like.

The Witcher

I gave it a try, since I like Western RP Gs, and I don't mind dark games. However, there were two problems:

1. The story and characterization really didn't strike me as that good, nor was the setting all that interesting. Having the morality of a story be grey is no excuse for having all the locales and characters being just as colorless. Put bluntly, the writing didn't hold a candle to any of Bioware or Obsidians decent work.

2. The controls. Good lord, the controls. I could have probably put up with blah story, if the game didn't use that stupid rhythmic clicking.

Several Nippon Ichi games, such as Disgaea, as well as Luminous Arc. This is mostly because I can't seem to get into the Strategy/Tactical RPG genre anymore. The first Vandal Hearts was the last of those games that I enjoyed...

I don't hate these games, but I can't seem to get into them as much as I would like to.

Commander Keen for the Gameboy Color. Ugh. I was young and hadn't realized that none of the original creative staff was involved. Totally a In Name Only game.

I really wanted to like Zack and Wiki. It's obscure, experimental, adorable... sounds like it hits all my buttons. But Zack sounds like he's about to throw up every time he does something, and there's a difference between "experimental" and "Guide Dang It!, what contrived thing am I supposed to do now?" That and it actually managed to hit my cute threshold. Impressive for someone who loves the cute Pikachu games...

I also really wanted to like Professor Layton. Then I actually tried it and realized I hate those kinds of logic puzzles.

Dragon Age Origins, the setting failed to immerse me, and the combat felt clunky and outdated. I haven't played Dragon Age 2 yet so that might be better.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers.

The main gameplay idea just had so much potential. And I did enjoy it, but... there was just so much wasted potential there. There wasn't enough to do with the gravity powers, the game kept showing us uses of the powers in cutscenes that we could never do in-game (a shield, crushing a foe into the ground, f********king FLYING!), and in game it all boiled down to "pick this up, spin this to activate something, throw stuff at the boss". (oh, and there weren't enough bosses) Plus, the whole day/night mechanic just made it near-impossible to get ll the Myrrh drops you wanted. I kind of wish that you could use that machine gun the main character had in the first cutscene, or levitate other weapons. Come on, developers; you have magic telekinesis to work with! There is so much you could've done! Or at least remove some of the Guide Dang It! moments.

I did like it, but it could've been so much more, you know?

Fire Emblem, for the GBA. A friend with great gaming taste recommended it to me. I'd loooooved the hell out of Final Fantasy Tactics A 2, so I figured I'd enjoy this, too.

However, the bland character designs, dialogue, and story kept me from liking it as much as I'd hoped. As well as the terrible (IMO) music and repetitive gameplay.

The biggest offender, however, were the permanent character deaths. I loathe this mechanic. I loathe loathe loathe loathe loathe it with every fiber of my being.

The battle animations had a lot of weight behind them, and looked pretty awesome though. Which was cool, I'll admit.

The permanent deaths are a staple of the series. It's just how it works.

See, the idea is long-term tactical planning. You try to work it out so that none of your guys die.

If your smart with your units then the permanent death thing is a non issue. And reset every time someone dies.
