I'm loadin' up my Dawn of Souls copy.

What should the names (and classes) of my characters be?

Real gamers(TM) only use four white mages. Anything else makes you a casualfag.

Firion as a Sword wielder, Guy as a White Magic master, and Maria as a Black magic ma- oh wait, that's not what you meant. tongue

But seriously, I'd say Fighter, Black Mage, White Mage, Monk. Red Mages are cool, but I feel like their lowered magic effectiveness and lack of access to the Heal line rather keeps them underpowered. Meanwhile, Monks become absolutely devastating once they outgrow the need for equipment.

Y'know I've never used Red M Ages in Dawn of Souls...or FFIII(DS). Guess I'm not too fond of the type.

I tried it in a playthrough recently.

Found myself constantly wishing I could cast Dia or Heal.

Two Fighter, Two Red Mages.

Call them Red Team.

The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.

Dia? Pffft, Fira and Firaga do what the Dia line does but isn't as over specialized.

Though a White Mage is a valuable team member. Though not for offense.

Untill they get their Holy Hand Grenade atleast. But you are more likely going to save that MP for healing instead.

Oh, and Knights don't get very useful White Magic, so if you want someone who can cast Curaga and wear some decent armour, go for Red Mage!

PROTIP: Advanced jobs (Knight, Ninja, Master and the two Wizards) get higher stat bonuses than base jobs! The exception is the Red Wizard, who gains the same bonuses as Red Mage.*

Also stat bonuses are slightly randomised (theres guaranteed stats, then theres a % for a bigger bonus) and theres apparently an invisisble stat for magic resistance.

Save Scumming is recommended before level ups occur if you want to get some decent HP/MP instead of a +3HP or other puny number.

Well, Dia isn't as much of a deal breaker as Heal.

You will find yourself wishing you could cast Healaga.

The Heal spells indeed are awesome, especially with the whole "blind turn based combat" system. (Insert all actions, without knowing who goes first and watch them play out)

I used Warrior, Thief, Black Mage, White Mage. Might want to swap a Monk for the Thief, but the low-level black magic is actually pretty useful in the end-game

Eh. With a Black Mage and the Giant's Glove, you've got both of your physical dudes at insane power inside of two turns anyway (Giant's Glove's Saber + Haste from the Black Mage), so I'd say Monk.

Well, the game isn't too hard anyhow, with the orignal ones bugs fixed, ability to save anywhere, having MP instead of spell limits, the ability to resurrect outside of towns and the increased level cap.

So any class is a usable choice, really. Even all thieves or Black Mages if you decide so.

Named them after the first four posts. Angry is Fighter, Nyarly is Thief, Enlong is Red Mage, and Barry is Black Mage.

The Dawn Of Souls version does come with the auto-name function, pulling random, more or less, relevant names to the characters.

Also, don't be surprised if your Black Mage's magical attacks start to fall behind in boss battles; I find they're best used late-game to provide Haste and Temper for your attackers.

The one time I played through FF 1, I didn't remember a hell of a lot that my white AND black mage did that a single red couldn't have done just as well or altogether prevented the need for (the really high-level spells aren't that useful and you only get like 1-2 apiece anyway). Not a whole lot the thief did that a fighter couldn't too, just an extra Haste near the end of the game. Magic kinda blew in that game with the stupid Vancian Magic.

Fighter, Red Mage, Monk, pick a wildcard supporter (probably a white mage for extra cure charges).

EDIT: Oh wait, Dawn of Souls just turned it into MP, huh? If the rest of the numbers haven't been tweaked much, I'd probably say the same thing. Physical combatants were really good in FF 1.

The White Mage still gets more MP, and the Intelligence/Spirit stat matters more since magic now uses it in reckoning damage.

Not a munchkin, guys. Look, this is someone who picked Charmander over Squirtle, despite the latter's better type advantages.
