... exactly how do we distinguish Something They Would Never Say from Something Only They Would Say?

What? The current definitions are not comparable at all.

  • Something They Would Never Say: Bob is taken hostage and needs to communicate he's in trouble; the bad guys allow him to call his friends but explicitly forbid him from revealing the situation. So he inserts a subtle OOC remark into his message that one of his friends will pick up on and realize "Something's wrong; Bob would never say that" without his captors picking up on it as well.

  • Something Only They Would Say: Bob's in disguise but blows his cover by letting slip a personal Catchphrase.

We distinguish them by the meaning of the words "only" and "never".

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.

^ Eh, something like that.

This topic could use a better tag, though. Like "...or the Trope Decay wins:"

Changing the title seems to be the only way to redemption for this one... Out-of-Character Alert or something in those lines... must include the idea of a call of help in any case.

[up] Yeah, that might help reduce confusion.

12-to-0 over three months looks pretty consensual. However, there's obviously a demand for a trope like Omega Kross' original post:

The description for this trope needs broadening to cover different uses of the trope. Right now it only covers instances where somebody slips erroneous information into a message as a warning to their friends. It doesnt cover the most common use of the trope, which is an imposter giving himself away by saying something out of character for the person he's impersonating.
It doesn't really overlap with O.O.C. Is Serious Business; how about an YKTTW?

Nevermind, that's the exact definition of Spotting the Thread

Calling the crowner in favor of the top two options:

  • Rename and Transplant
  • Redefine trope
Though the third option is in the green and has 2:1, it is mutually exclusive with the leading option, and thus cannot be selected.

I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.

A character can't directly tell their friends that they're in danger, so they send a message with a deliberately out-of-character remark added that the bad guys won't even notice, but the friends will pick up on and realize that the sender is in trouble.

Any ideas on names?

I was skimming through the YKTTW backlog yesterday when I spotted this. Awesome — codifying the 'covert distress call' trope is one step in the right direction for fixing this one.

Have I understood correctly that we'll have two tropes: Covert Distress Code (currently in YKTTW) for predefined emergency messages and The Trope Formerly Known As Something They Would Never Say for improvised ones?

OK, then. I liked Lyendith's suggestion Out-of-Character Alert for the spontaneous version, anyone else?

Oh, geez, so we got less than two days to rename this trope before it's stuck with the current name?

I guess we need a crowner, pronto!

One of the issues is we gotta finish up the YKTTW for the coded distress signal.

I hollered for a removal of the clock. There's just too much to do before the deadline. No response as of yet, tho'.

Last I heard there was no declock button, it can only be extended, not removed.

Apparently so; the clock has indeed been extended.

So what exactly remains to be done, so we can get an idea of what kind of time is required?

Well, let's see:

  1. Finish up the YKTTW and get it launched.
  2. Excise bad examples from STWNS to the new trope.
  3. Tighten up STWNS's definition to improvised distress signals only.
  4. ???
  5. PROFIT!

(I might be missing a step or two.)

I'd say so, because we got an unanimity for Rename-and-transplant. I've made a new names crowner: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/crowner.php/AlternativeTitles/SomethingTheyWouldNeverSay

Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!

19th Oct '11 8:19:45 PM

Crown Description:

Not all options are mutually exclusive.

Something They Would Never Say is losing the battle against Trope Decay — misuse has increased from 35% to 45% between June and October 2011.

  • Actual definition: A character can't directly tell their friends that they're in danger, so they send a message with a deliberately out of character remark added that the bad guys won't even be aware of, but the friends will pick up on and identify that they're in trouble.

  • Prevelant misuse: Any time a character appears to say something out of character. May be a case of Spotting The Thread or OOC Is Serious Business.

It can be argued the name simply covers too much ground for the given definition. What do we do?
