Tropers: Ironeye
This is TV Tropes, bitch! We don't cheer up until you tie us to a wall and whisper sweet nothings about thermal expansion into our ear while you ravish us to the sounds of the Touhou soundtrack.
Ironeye responding to Blackmoon telling everyone to cheer up

Ironeye is a mathematics student and teacher's assistant at the University of California, Irvine campus. He enjoys Speculative Fiction in its many forms, and occasionally gets the bright idea of writing some of his own. Then he wishes he had an actual manuscript so he could ritual purify himself by burning all record of the resulting horror.

He is inordinately fond of Mood Whiplash, Anti Villains, Soundtrack Dissonance, Bittersweet Endings, Alas, Poor Villain, Go Out with a Smile, and Tear Jerkers in general.

  • Who can you always count on to help you when you're in a bind?
    • Hmmm... my family, of course. Even after I told him that I knew I wasn't his daughter, my dad has always been by my side. Same thing for my four sisters, although Elissa is too young to really help, and Myra, well, honestly, unless you need a untainted mind, she's not that useful. I don't know if I still trust my mom, after I found out what she was hiding from me, and as for my brother, well... his smile still haunts my dreams.
  • Who identified your Mark of Storm for you, and who is the one other person they told about it? (Jinxed)
    • Back at the academy, I needed to figure out what House my Mark belonged to. I figured I could ask Mrs. Berch, the librarian. Though, I know her from the farm down the road that hosted the local festivals and get-togethers. The thing is I think she may have told a higher leveled cleric about my asking about the Mark of Storms.
  • What previous experience with House Lyrandar convinced you that you shouldn't deal with them in the future?
    • Well, a year or so ago, from what I've gathered, an agent of House Lyrandar went rogue and hijacked an airship. Well, that'd be none of my concern if said airship didn't end up crashing on my property. Smashed part of my house, destroyed my barn, killed who knows how many animals, and it drove a massive gash into the farm that still won't grow anything. That one incident consumed all of our money and we still haven't recovered from it completely. But what did House Lyrandar do for us? Absolutely nothing. Apparently, because it was a rogue agent that crashed the airship, they aren't responsible for his actions and they aren't liable for what happened. I can't believe that an orginazation could be so apathetic . . . Assholes, the lot of 'em.
  • How did you get invited to dine with Adal ir'Wynarn? (Lance)
    • A year or so ago, I was riding on one of the few non-Lyrander airships good to not draw attention to oneself you know, on my way to the outskirts of the Mournland to take over a position recently vacated at a temple there. The ship hit a sudden, intense squall, tossing it around like a toy. Running to the deck I didn't even think, I just reached out with my magic and guided the currents around the ship, easing it's voyage through the rough skies. Adal was on board and hunted me down after he heard stories of what I'd done, offering me a chance at employment with the Aundairian Skyfleet. He said changes would be coming soon, big ones, and that He could use people like me when the time came. Something about the glorious rebirth of Galifar. I politely declined and hid in my quarters until we had docked and headed to the temple post haste; that man was trouble, the most insidious kind, and I wanted nothing to do with it.
  • Why does your brother's smile haunt your dreams? (Kara)
    • I was twelve, and he was nine. We were mad at our parents for some reason, and I decided that in order to get back at them, we should misbehave. So we climbed up to the roof and started pulling out pieces of thatch. And then he slipped and fell headfirst…he didn’t die, but he was never the same afterward...he lost nearly all his powers of speech and a lot of his memory, and he kept having fits and…eventually my parents couldn’t cope anymore and turned him over to a hospital for the mad. But he never stopped recognizing me, and whenever he saw me he would give me a smile...the same self-satisfied smile he had while we were up on the roof pulling up the thatch...
  • Why did you find yourself spending more and more time at church and less time on the farm? (Ivy)
    • Eh heh... this story is somewhat awkward, considering that I've never been particularly religious. It's taken a good deal of practice to pass myself off as a devotee of Arawai. What it was, was an acolyte, Dover Boarshead, had raised suspicion of me not being a believer. I had to do a lot of overtime at the church, studying all the assorted lore, which naturally kept me away from the family's homestead. It was a necessary effort.
  • When your best friend among the cleric trainees abandoned the Sovereign Host to join the Church of the Silver Flame, what did you do to try to stop him? (Matrix)
    • Oh yeah.. Andor Smith. Well, you see, one day, he went on a pilgrimage to the big temple in Fairhaven. He took a wrong turn into a bad part of the city and got mugged, and was left there, bleeding. He prayed and prayed and prayed, but nothing happened. He was losing blood and desperate, and I think delirious, because he said that in that desperation, he prayed to whoever would listen instead. So then this paladin of the Silver Flame, Faran, comes along, catches the guys who mugged Andor, and brings him to a hospital. I dunno about this Faran character. I've heard he gets a little too into the whole smiting evil thing. So anyways, when Andor came back from Fairhaven, he had all these doubts in his head. He didn't tell anyone but me. He mulled them over for about a week, I guess, then he said he was leaving to join the Church of the Silver Flame. I was devastated, but I didn't do anything. He was always stubborn about stuff like this, and if that was what he really wanted, I wasn't going to take it away from him.
  • Why was your only chance to learn of your true parentage cut short?
    • Elmil Summerteach. She was a crone who, according to my mom, was the midwife at my birth. She told me to come see her when I turned twenty to hear the true story about my dad. I came to her hut in the forest to see her, but it was ransacked. The only trace of her I could find is a ring that she always wore. I wonder what happened to her...
  • What thing precious to Elnisa did you save on the day you met her?
    • Oh, this story. I was eighteen, and I just entered the clergy. I had seen her a few times around the temple in Bluevine, but she was one of the really pious ones, so I shied away from her. Well, I was out on the outskirts of the farm, when I saw her, fleeing like a madwoman, and holding on to a small dog for dear life. I was about to ask why when the question was answered by the humongous bee chasing her. I don't mean a normal bumblebee, this thing was as big as a sheep. I decided to help a fellow of the *she coughs* well, the faith, so I summoned up some fog to blind it. After the fog dissipated, the bee sort of looked confused and flew in the other direction. We had our first real conversation later that day, after the thing with the diary. I'm sure she would elaborate for you about that. Elnisa told me afterward that her dog had pissed it off, and it would have killed it if I didn't distract it. She made me swear never to tell anyone about that, too.
  • How did the nameless warforged manage to find you, and why did he say he was looking for you in the first place?
    • Well, my sister once dragged me along with a group of her friends to "bring attention to the corruption and evils that permeate House Lyrandar". Her words, not mine. We had gone to picket the nearest airship station. We were in rough groups; one at the base of the tower, and one up at the top, near the ships. Well, I was part of the group on the ground, and I didn’t see what had happened up top, but judging by the way that they started running, and if it's enough to make a noble of House Lyrandar send a wizard for one of us personally, then it must have been quite a thing. Oh, you asked how... well, I think that wizards can find people based on the items that they have, and I think I might have had a flier or something still in my bag, so I’m guessing that he found me that way. As for what happened... Well, I was doing my daily clerical duties when I heard the leader of the temple start shouting. I went to see what it was that was happening, and this metal man was there, in our temple. I had never really seen a Warforged before then, so I was in awe. Anyway, the Warforged turned to me when I walked in, walked over to me, and he - it said to me "Mavolim d'Lyrandar wants to speak with you." Well, I had no idea who that is - and I still don't - but I recognized the last name. I told him that I wasn’t there, but, thankfully, before he could say any retort, the head priest was raising such a ruckus that the gnome with it got embarrassed and led it out. Afterwards, I ran into the two later in town. The gnome told me that, despite the last name, Mavolim wasn't associated with Lyrandar, and in fact was working against them. She also gave me an address in Sharn where I could find him Well, a year or so after that, I managed to get enough cash to go to where he was, but he wasn't there. According to the rumor mill, he's gone into hiding and nobody knows where he is. Well, that's just great.

    Brackle Demp Derrevan
  • Where have you lived over the course of your lifetime?
    • I was born in Cyre, in Metrol. My family moved to Seaside when I was three, and I lived there until four years ago. Now I live in Sharn, because that's where I was on the Day of Mourning. I was there because I had been invited to an art show sponsored by House Phiarlan. Someone with some measure of influence had noticed a painting I had done and liked it. That particular painting was actually inspired by some things I saw in people's minds. And then came the Day of Mourning. Poof. All I had left was that painting, the clothes I was wearing, and some supplies I had brought. I decided to stay in Sharn, because there was literally no Cyre left to go back to. What the Valaes Tairn and Darguun goblins hadn't stolen, the Lord of Blades had destroyed! Well, that's my theory, anyway.
  • What's the one secret you have to keep from everyone you meet, especially your companions?
    • The painting I brought with me to Sharn before the Day of Mourning. Irdana Kaltoreth, a moderately wealthy half-elf art aficionado, the woman who invited me to that art show still has it. She occasionally brings it out when showing her collection, though she has it credited to a rather reclusive man called Tarl Tander, whom conveniently nobody other than Irdana has ever met. I prefer it that way.
  • What do you most regret doing with your powers? (Lance)
    • A job in Sharn went bad fast, (They always seem to, they never go bad slowly, with plenty of warning) and I was running for my life from the guards of House Lobrashk. They're one of the Sixty Families and of the few who are Half Orcs, tracing their lineage to the Founding of the Gatekeepers. In the Sewers beneath the estate frantically looking for a porthole or storm drain to scramble through, Lobrashk is known for combining artifice and druidism and I didn't want to be on the receiving end of either. After dragging myself through a broken gutter grate into one of the less well to do areas to put it simply, I had a moment to catch my bearings. Just some rundown slum market with some merchants trying to scratch out a living here in the twilight cast by the city of towers. The guards weren't far behind me, and they'd sent a pair of bloody mages after me, all closing in fast. In a panic I used a psychic burst to guide their attentions and aggression to some poor shopkeep who was just passing by, just for a second. He hadn't done anything, but while I ran as fast as my legs could carry me I heard the WHOOMPH of a fireball igniting behind me, followed by a wave of warmth a few seconds later. I'm not sure I've ever forgiven myself that act of cowardice, that singular instance to surpass all others. I managed to escape, laying low down in the Cogs after paying a street-mage to scramble my trail. "Inferno's Respite" Is not the nicest of places, but Lenny, the barkeep and owner, knows me lets me lend a room when I'm in need. He's a nice enough guy, tough as dragons teeth, though that's not unusual for a dwarf I guess. Just don't start a fight in his bar. Seriously. Don't.
  • Who once inspired you to a particular calling, and why do you no longer hold those aspirations?
    • I've always held images in my head in exceptional detail. Probably something to do with my psionics. My mother, Anri, was a painter, and I tried to follow in her footsteps. I haven't been able to so much as lift a paintbrush since the Day of Mourning. Gets me thinking of my mother. She was still back home when it happened.
  • Who would you least like to meet in a dark alley at night?
    • Mm. His name's Gerren Cantor. Human. Rather temperamental. Has some kind of dragonmark. I guess it's what they'd call 'aberrant'. He lived in Seaside, and I knew him since he was smaller than me. We were actually friends for a while, until one day when we were hanging out by the docks. Not much was happening, since were were both rather quiet kids, and I was getting kinda bored. So I decided to have a peek in his head, see what he was thinking. Maybe spark up a conversation. I did not in any way expect what I heard in there. He was thinking about leaving to try and join that House Tarkanan! This was very strange, seeing as they no longer exist. So, since I was his friend, and I didn't want him making any stupid decisions like that, I decided to give him my two copper on the matter. He got really pissed off that I was in his head. I tried to calm him down, I mean, I look in everybody's heads. Not exactly a sign of distrust on my part, just casually looking like that. And it's not like that was the first time I'd peeked in his head, either. But still, he took it really badly. Maybe it was the subject matter. As I said, temperamental. He even pulled out a dagger on me. Nothing like that had ever happened to me before, and having someone I thought was a friend doing it made it worse. I tried to apologise, but he wouldn't listen. But, I wasn't about to let myself get cut, so I dazed him. Dazed him and ran. Never saw him again, and I plan on keeping it that way. Still, wish I could've done something to help him out.
  • What makes you stand out in a crowd? (Kara)
    • The design embroidered on the back of my jacket is pretty distinctive, I think. Not many people wear a picture of a tiger’s face in shades of green, with the eyes done in amber glass beads. It would be easier to be inconspicuous without it, but I like the jacket too much. It’s comfy, and it reminds me of my ex-girlfriend. (She added the beads.)
  • In what unexpected way did your psionic powers originally manifest?
    • It happened one day when I was thirteen. I was walking home from school when all of a sudden there was a veritable deluge of voices in my head. I was stunned for a few seconds, and then I thought I was going crazy. Of course, then I remembered the fact that if you actually go crazy, you probably wouldn't realise it. It all died down over the course of a few minutes, over which I realised I was reading people's minds, by the fact that I could hear what they were thinking of saying before they actually said it. I thought about it for a bit and then tried doing it purposely, which, at that very early point, didn't work that well. I had to really focus or I would just get noise, like a waterfall. After a week or so of this, I found myself surrounded by three statuesque figures in an alleyway. I felt something pushing against my mind for a bit, but after it stopped, they were confused. They were Kalashtar, and had assumed that I was a sleeper agent for the Riedrans, but when they found no quori spirit they realised that I was a genuine psion. After the confusion came relief, and they offered to teach me about being a psion, which I accepted.
  • How did you get the nasty scars on the palms of your hands? (Staghorn)
    • I gained these not too long ago. I was hired by House Denieth to "take a look" at the leader of the Sharn branch of one of the other houses. They never said what one, just that they wanted to know what they were up to. I shouldn't have accepted in retrospect, but the reward that they offered looked really, really good at the time. It was when I saw the basilisk on the crests of the guards that were pointing crossbows at me the second I went through the window that I realized that I was sent to spy on House Medani. Performing espionage against the house with the Mark of Detection was about as smart as trying to kiss a troll. I tried to back away before I got shot, but I backed myself off of the tower. I tried grabbing on to anything that I could to slow my fall, but everything I tried grabbing onto only cut my hands. Fortunately, I was caught by a passerby before I could hit the ground. I still don't know why House Denieth wanted me to do something that was pretty much guaranteed to fail.
  • Who can you always count on to help you when you're in a bind? (Jinxed)
    • Kessa Burnwick. She’s a dear friend in Sharn. She had my back after the Day of Mourning. I had hit rock bottom when my family had been killed. I had developed a bit of a problem with drinking. I was kinda ruining my life a little there before she, quite literally, slapped me out of it.
  • Ring of feather falling:
    • After that nasty fall where I got my palms scarred, I instantly decided that I never wanted to experience that again. The man who caught me happened to be a wizard of Morgrave University, human, called Deran Hadolar. He helped me to a Jorasco hospital for healing. After that, I brought him to the Fizzing Flask, my friend Kessa's tavern/apothecary to buy him a drink and a nice, long conversation. We discussed what similarities wizards and psions have, among such things as the work done from Morgrave, and various historical topics like the ancient giant civilisation and the events leading up to the Day of Mourning. He thinks it was Karrnath sabotaging Cannith via the Order of the Emerald Claw. I guess everyone has their own theory. Before he left, he gave me a ring and told me to put it on before I did any falling again, and suggested that I talk to him at Morgrave if I need a job.

    Anila Cuprite
  • Where have you lived over the course of your lifetime? (Ivy)
    • Weeell . . . my job takes me to a lot of places, but for the most part, I've stuck mainly to Zilargo, Sharn, and occasionally the rest of Breland, y'know, when they need repairs on the train tracks and all that. But mostly, Sharn.
  • What do you call the nameless warforged, and why?
    • Bernard. He’s a big gentle giant. Plus, he saved my hide more than once.
  • What is the worst thing you have ever made? (Matrix)
    • Ugh. The Hyperbaric Supersonic Waveform Emitter. It was supposed to, ya know, blast things with powerful sonic waves, turning them into destabilized super-energetic goop. Woulda used it for, say, demolishing old buildings. Instead it played bad, loud music, turning people's brains to mush. Thankfully, not literally.
  • Describe the person who sees you as their bitter personal nemesis. (Lance)
    • I Don't have any rivals silly! what gave- oh, well, there was that one guy way back when, big, built like an ox, a dwarven guy. Seemed to have been miffed that I had found a way to improve his Magnum opus...
  • What keeps you up at night in cold sweats? (Kara)
    • The work I’ve done on warforged sometimes makes me wonder...what if other machines that we create are also "alive" in their way, and we can’t tell because they don’t talk or move on their own? What if we’re hurting them by treating them so carelessly? What if they’re plotting revenge? This is why I need to cut back on the sweets after supper.
  • What were you doing during the war? (Staghorn)
    • Well, the Power of Purity was a pretty big supplier for magic weapons and such, so I helped prepare the elemental components of war machines and the like. Didn't care for the war too much, but work is work, so I helped how I could. I remember seeing some of the really big Warforged that I had supplied components for, Titans and the like. Those things were huge!
  • How did Brackle end up in debt to you?
    • I’m not sure on the entire story but… I think Brackle was tryin’ to hide from someone he had angered. And well in his attempts to find a hiding spot he ran into the employee’s only area at the station. Not sure how he managed to get that far into the back without another employee spotting him but anyway, he was panicking so I just had to go over and see what was the fuss y'know? To make a bit of a story short, I wound up assuring a couple of other employee's that I knew who he was and that he was simply drunk not knowing where he is. I got him outta there at the risk of my job and so now he kinda owes me.
  • Why do you never take off that one piece of jewelry?
    • This locket was crafted by a dear friend of mine, Dimple, from over with the Inmost. Look, it’s got a little peridot and some clockwork! It’s actually made from scrap metal of the first airship ya know! Isn’t that just the sweetest?
  • Why did you become an informant for the Trust?
    • It seemed like a good idea at the time! I mean The Trust’s sole purpose is to keep the citizens of Zilargo safe! How could I not agree to help them?
  • Who can you always count on to help you when you're in a bind?
    • My brother Baldrik! He’s a bard down in Thurimbar! He’s pretty mellow but anyway. He hasn’t ever let me down when I needed him. Always goin’ above and beyond for family!
  • What's the one secret you have to keep from everyone you meet, especially your companions?
    • I’ve had to tell the Trust about my friends more than once. It’s not something I’m proud of but, they (The Trust) needed to know certain things for a good reason I’m sure. I just wish I didn’t have to be so sneaky about it.
  • Why are you so fond of Averia, high elemental binder of the Inmost?
    • Oh! Averia! She’s amazing! She does the elemental binding for the Inmost! She actually picked me to mentor! Me! She’s stricter than a High Cleric for the Silver Flame when it comes to the quality of our work though. But that didn’t mean she’s an awful person to work for. She’s patient enough to teach us to get it done right y’know?

    Nameless
  • Who created you, and for what purpose?
    • I was created by the Lord of Blades, I don't know why.
  • Who taught you magic, and why can't they teach anyone any more?
    • After wandering the wastes of the Mournland for nearly a year, I encountered an aging man who called himself Tibalyn. at the time, I could not even speak, so he took me in and "raised" me, gave me a name, "Jegan". some months later he was out on the Glass Plateau gathering samples of the glass when he slipped, caught his safety cable on an edge, and tumbled to the spiny floor below. I have not uttered that name since.
  • Why did you, a machine of war, intentionally give up offensive magic?
    • Tibalyn gave me a choice, the opportunity, to set aside the path of the warforged and create one for myself. Out of respect for him, I chose to walk alone on the road to an uncertain future.
  • Who can you always count on to help you when you're in a bind? (Jinxed)
    • My friend Anila. She willingly traveled with me to the Mournlands when I went to find Tibalyn’s body without my asking. Plus, she’s more than once told me to count on her for anything.
  • What's the one secret you have to keep from everyone you meet, especially your companions?
    • The Lord of Blades only let me live because the construction forge templates had been modified for my batch. I look normal, but I have no idea what was done to me.
  • How do you feel about House Cannith? (Matrix)
    • Cannith. That name does not evoke sympathy from me. I have heard tales from others of my kind of their experiments. I have tried to see these for myself, but alas; I saw nothing, yet they saw me. Since then, I have been occasionally propositioned by men who I do not know to aid them with various problems. I suspect at least some of these have been connected to Cannith, though only one have I been able to actually determine as such. A human called Wrand Talgard. He had heard of my skill as a diviner - as I was able to discern, from House Cannith - and wanted me to find a trinket he lost. This search led me to the bowels of Sharn, where I was assaulted by strange mechanical beings - not warforged, something else. I was able to barely get away and quickly found my way back out. Talgard has never contacted me since, but I have slowly been keeping track of him - he has failed multiple times to have proper protection against scrying and such. However, I am confident that one day his mistakes may put me on the trail to finding out the truth behind the rumors about House Cannith.
  • What would drive you to kill someone in cold blood?
    • I abhor killing, life is precious, my years wandering the barren wastes of Cyre taught me that. but if it meant that I could prevent another catastrophe like that, save hundreds, thousands of lives... if I could prevent another orphanage from filling...
  • Describe your one fleeting encounter with the Lord of Blades. (Kara)
    • There is little enough to tell. He looked me over and directed me to make certain movements—testing my construction, I assume. Then he said “You will be of greater use to me left to your own devices.” Before the day was out, I had been escorted to the borders of his territory and told to be on my way.
  • What were the first repairs Anila ever made on you, and what was she paying you back for?
    • Her first repairs were to my right arm, which I had damaged protecting her from mutated creatures. Not having anything else to do I decided he'd accompany her, the repairs were a thank you, as well as the start of a friendship.
  • What are you hoping to find in the Mournland on your journeys there with Anila? (Staghorn)
    • I am hoping to find Tibalyn's body. Or what's left of it, anyway. I have realized, in retrospect, that his body should not have been left to rot in the wastes, but should have been given a proper burial, or something similar to it.
  • Who did you think Kaylee was when you first met her, and why didn't you tell her you were looking for someone else? (Ivy) Lance
    • I was looking for a young girl I'd seen in my dreams, if warforged can have dreams. I knew she was important, but couldn't say why. These feelings led me to the Abbey where The half elf "Kaylee" resided, but she was not the girl from my dreams. I was disappointed for a moment, but then destiny tugged again at my consciousness, and I heard myself speak the words ""Mavolim d'Lyrandar wants to speak with you." I still don't know what it meant, but When the abbot started to go off like a blast disk and Anila led me out. Kaylee was destined for great things, I could feel it. She would have some part to play in what was to come.

  • How did you find your calling as a paladin?
    • I’ve always felt driven to perform great deeds. You can ask anyone in my family or in the town where I grew up. Then when I was about six or seven, there was a crop blight in the area, and we escaped the worst of it...which made us a target for bandits since we had food when no one else did. A paladin from the Church—just one!—came to guard our silos, and he didn’t ask for a thing in payment, only for us to share our little excess with the surrounding villages. The mayor almost said no, but that paladin gave him such a look... The whole incident really made an impression on me.
  • What were you doing during the war? (Lance)
    • I showed up to the Staging Point for the Breland 54th Infantry, Gear polished Until a nobleman could willingly use it as a mirror, Medical Satchel filled until it would barely close, ready to do my part in protecting the innocent. Only to be relieved because Cannith had "Given us the army of the Future" so I got to sit around in Vathirond for a few weeks tending to the wounded and the refugees, mostly women and children until the next supply train came. As I was heading to leave, one of the children of the villagers gave me a small stuffed rabbit the children had made for me, then it dawned on me, you can defend the innocent with more than just a halberd, so I stayed with them until the close of the war. I have no regrets. I saw what happened to them, there on the border of Cyre, there was a stench in the air for weeks after the Day of Mourning. Wounded, and more often bodies, poured in on a Daily basis. There was no Glory in this, there was only death. More than the death of an army, the death of an entire nation laid heavy in the air and slowly ground morale into dust. Without the few Paladins like me left at Vathirond, I worry the fate of those who returned may have been quite different.
  • Who can you always count on to help you when you're in a bind?
    • Oh, wow...I haven’t thought about Martull in months. Martull Fairwood and I trained together. We were always paired off for weapons practice because we were the same size, and so we became best friends. We took vows together—in the same ceremony, that is—and served together on the same assignments for the first few years. I’d do anything for Martull because I know he’d do the same for me. I should find out where he is these days and write to him.
  • What's your current goal in life?
    • ...well...I’d like to do something that would get me known as a hero. I knew paladinhood was first and foremost a life of service, but it can’t be all give and no get, can it? Once in a while, I would like to enter a town and have everyone glad to see me, not just another representative of the Host.
  • What's the one secret you have to keep from everyone you meet, especially your companions? (Staghorn)
    • My mom... a year or so ago, she had this massive symbol on her back appear. It's some sort of Dragonmark, but everyone says that it's not one of the normal ones. It's... aberrant. People say that those come from corrupted bloodlines of corrupted marks. Nobody in my family has ever seen anything like it. I don't know what anyone would think of it. Imagine what people would think of me if they found out that that mark was in my bloodline...
  • How do you feel about getting so close to middle age?
    • Conflicted. I still have a lot of living ahead of me, and I love my job and want to see how far it can take me...but on the other hand, it might be wise for me to settle down and start a family while I still can (see below).
  • Why were you so eager to leave Starilaskur to deliver your temple's funds to Prince Lorrister?
    • In addition to the fact that I am always pleased to serve, especially in pursuit of so noble a cause (and I resent any implication otherwise)...I’d had a big row with the quartermaster the previous day, and it seemed like everyone was taking her side. My leaving gave us both a chance to clear our heads, and when I got back we agreed to pretend it hadn’t happened. It was such a stupid thing to have an argument over in the first place.
  • Why do you bear a particular grudge against the Mockery? (Jinxed)
  • Why do you dye your hair that color?
    • Auburn is more interesting than my natural brown. And it covers the bits of gray.
  • What about yourself are you most ashamed of? (Ivy)
    • I don't like to talk about it, but... when I was younger, I was cleaning in the church dormitories when I, ah... misplaced a solid gold pocket watch of Cernon Adelor's. Unfortunately, it was an enchanted object that he kept close to him in order to maintain his health; afterward, he became very, very ill. The loss of the watch caused quite a furor. I put it back as soon as I could, but the old man was never the same since. To this day, I'm not sure what possessed me to do it.
  • What thing precious to Kaylee did you save on the day you met her?
    • Oh, the diary! It was her grandmother’s, or maybe her great-aunt’s—the only thing she had to remember said relative by in any case, and she had gotten it mixed up with the waste papers she was sending to the temple furnace. She assumed it was too late to retrieve it and was distraught, but I ran hell-for-leather down to the furnace room and grabbed it maybe five minutes before it would have gone in. I turned my ankle heading down the stairs and had to explain myself to the acolytes on furnace duty, but it was worth it to see Kaylee’s face when I brought the diary back to her.
  • Who's the one person whose indiscretions you are nearly always willing to tolerate? (Matrix)
    • My old mentor in the church, Cernon Adelor. He has this tendency to... drink a lot. And while drunk, he tends to go around flirting with anything walking on two legs. Many of the younger acolytes find it amusing, myself not so much. However, he also taught me that faith has no meaning when not used in service of others, no strength when not used to move mountains, and no use when you cannot help yourself, among other things.
  • Why doesn't your brother talk to you any more?
    • If you ask Dorrin, he’ll feed you some sob story about infertility and the duty to produce the next generation of our family, but I think he’s jealous that I have a more distinguished career than he does. Nothing’s stopping him and Eunie from adopting, and I’m sure any orphan would be thrilled to have them as parents.
