So a while ago someone here recommended me meade, and I finally had the chance to taste it.
They were right! Way better taste for alcohol! Unfortunately I only got a tiny sip because the person supplying the alcohol liked the meade the best, and thus kept it for herself, which granted, is understandable.
Read my stories!I think when that came up I commented that I hadn't liked mead when I first tried it, but it was something like the third alcoholic drink I'd ever had, so I wanted to give it another shot. At last year's renaissance fair I bought a cup of it and it's probably the best non-mixed drink I've had.
Fresh-eyed movie blogNine dollars at an airport TGI Fridays is not the way to learn I don't like Bloody Marys.
Fresh-eyed movie blogOh god, why would you do that to yourself?
Yeah, Bloody Marys...*shudder*
It was breakfast time, and I knew I could find a bar at an airport, so I thought I'd cross it off my list.
Should've gone for the mimosa instead.
Fresh-eyed movie blogMy favourite brewery. Recommended if you live in the North East of England, or elsewhere in the country and don't mind paying for postage.
Bottle-conditioned beers which are unusually crisp and delicious. Pretty much the aged single malt Scotch of beers. My favourite is Evensong.
Diablous and Black Bishop for me... Though, I'll not turn any of their range down. Particularly not if I can get it from cask (they occasionally do do casks).

Never had Diabolus but Temptation has some OOMPH and Black Bishop is excellent to accompany a nice thick chowder I have my own "thistle" glass from them and I expect to get a lot more of their stuff over the years (as well as their beer, I love their whole design and aesthetic).
I have a hard time finding beers that are not overloaded with hops for me. I am one of those poor sods who is very sensitive to bitter tastes. The closest thing I can think of is like consuming brussel sprouts that are a bit too "green" is what hoppy beers taste like.
So my struggle is to find beers with little or even no hops if possible. I have had varying degrees success. Anyone know of any beer brands that do that? I have good luck with hard liquors but sometimes I just want a simple cold beer. I found one beer that is cheap but very low in hops.

Who watches the watchmen?I know somebody who's distilling his own whiskey, and it's the best whiskey I've ever tasted (not that I've tasted much).
Since he's just getting started, I was wondering what commercial brands he was into that I could buy to get something similar, and then I realized he has a bottle of Glenlivet on top of his refrigerator.
Going to the liquor store today, their Glenlivet was at least $15 more than I've seen it online, so I thought I'd try a different single-malt, but all the single-malts were $20 more than the blendeds and I decided I wasn't actually comfortable spending all that much today, so I looked for something light in color like my friend's whiskey.
I ended up with a Highland Mist. Turns out to be not at all what I was looking for in drinking experience. I drowned it in cola like usual.

Fresh-eyed movie blogGood scotch is really expensive. Only blended scotch I know of that most people consider drinkable is Monkey Shoulder, and even that will set you back around $40.
It's expensive but worth it. Lagavulin and Laphroiag are my favourites.
Feel free to PM me if you want to chat about whisky, or check out r/scotch, ralfystuff on Youtube, or Malt Madness.
I'd rate Ardbeg 10 higher than either of those, and Port Charlotte higher than the Ardbeg.

Schild und Schwert der ParteiI also bought a premix bottle of mimosa. Apparently, when I was mixing orange juice and lemon-lime soda as a refresher after lawn mowing, I was making virgin mimosas.
Fresh-eyed movie blogSo I read in Mental Floss that Mountain Dew was originally devised as a mixer for whiskey (no doubt why its name is, I'm pretty sure, another name for moonshine).
I've tried it.
If it were a little sweeter it'd be the perfect way to drink whiskey, but I think I still prefer it with lemon-lime.
I still like calling my cheap whiskey and lemon-lime mixes Mist and Mist, since I started making it with Canadian Mist and Sierra Mist, a poor man's Seven and Seven.
Fresh-eyed movie blogMy wife has fallen in love with Crown Royal's Regal Apple mixed with Sprite. It's not bad but not something I'd choose to drink over a basic rum and Coke.
I usually just drink Crown Royal straight; the only time that I ever bother mixing it with anything is when I'm making Black Tooth Grins, and even then, I don't go for those all that often.
Tbh I don't drink anything beyond beer and the occasional mead - even if the mead where I live sucks (It's basically a wine with the hint of honey, not the overwhelming HONEY I would expect from a mead).
We do have a lot of tasty beer where I live, though. There's Boundary Bay, Aslan Brewery, Wander Brewery, Kulshan Brewery, and Chuckanut Brewery. We also have Elizabeth Station, which although it isn't a brewery, is the best collection of beers one could find in the county.
All this in a town of 80k people.
edit: has anyone tried any of those breweries?

Got home from working in the nastiness and poured myself a scotch and coke. Accidentally poured out twice as much scotch as I usually do. Well, I guess I earned it.

I haven't had Port Charlotte, but I've had Octomore from the same distillery. It was amazing! Really peaty, which I love. It lasted me about six months because it was definitely a "special occasions only" thing.
Octomore is crazily awesome, but you really need to grab it early because it's so expensive.
Schild und Schwert der ParteiGod, I've forgotten how much I fucking love Rumple Minze, the 100 proof breathmint.
For when you wanna be drunk as fuck, but also have minty fresh breath.
What I've got is Mix Master Margarita Mix and Agavales Blanco tequila.
I sampled the mix without any tequila and it was basically limeade.
