That doesn't change the fact that casting off the first love to slavery would be unimaginably horrible. At least where I'm concerned.

Yes, but you can't make it any better, so why worry about it?

It's like worrying that your one true love is dead already. It sucks, but the proper thing to do is to acknowledge that and get over it, not kill yourself.

"True love" doesn't exist, by virtue of human nature. But that's a different topic for another day.

@Anonym But the person was already a slave in the first place.

I still wouldn't want to leave them alone. I wouldn't accept such.

I've already done the whole sociopath/hardening of the heart thing. It isn't very nice. Or good, rather.

Buy, free, marry, campaign against slavery in the original area.

At first I didn't realize I needed all this stuff...

Would you rather pass up the boy/girl of your dreams, or marry into slavery?
False dilemma. None of my dreams involve marriage or "love". I may have certain uses for a female slave, were she available for rent, but marrying into slavery— a somewhat redundant phrase in my eyes— would be unacceptable.

I suppose this dilemma takes for granted the fact that this person is your 'love' - not your one true love or any such nonsense, just a person who you have grown to love over time and now care about deeply.

Sure, if you let them go you'll probably find someone else you're capable of loving just as much. But will that make losing the one you have any less painful? I don't think so.

Be not afraid...

Even if you find a "replacement", it still wouldn't make the fate of the first go away.

Human lives aren't interchangeable like currency.

[up] You got me there. Slave trading regrettably totally happened for a disturbing amount of time. Heck, it's disturbing that it ever happened at all. But I'm derailing the discussion with that, so let's get back on topic.

Well, per parameters of question freeing them is impossible for some reason. So they are casted off to slavery anyway, no matter if you join them or not.

Leaving them alone to their fate is still horrible though. Of course, that is more of a matter of opinion.

As I've said, it is possible that I'll decide to stay anyway. What I want to point out is that if they loved me in turn they would not want me to stay.

It gets even weirder. If your loved one does not want you to stay but you do it otherwise, is it not ignoring their desires and essentially treating them no better than their master does?

If your loved one wants you to stay, then they clearly do not love you, and so do not deserve your sacrifice in the first place.

But if your loved one does not want you to stay and you leave, you are abandoning them.

Really weird.

Is slavery worth love?

From my own perspective, I don't believe it is. Then again, I have never been in love and generally don't really get that sort of thing, so I can't really put myself into the frame of mind necessary to provide a seriously considered answer.

If one is interested in love, I suppose there is a chance they might think so, which is fair enough. To each his, I guess.

Aha! Found the thing I knew I saw sometime when I was originally arguing this!

From Happiness in Slavery:

Frederick Douglass - an escaped slave himself - was angry about hearing this defense of slavery. He said that even a kind master could turn nasty, or die, or trade his slaves to someone else; that the worst thing about slavery wasn't over work but the complete and total lack of choice, which is unaffected by whether or not slaves were fed well and beaten infrequently; that the fact that slaves often sang as they worked was in fact a sign of sorrow, not joy. He'd observed slaves from different plantations fighting over whose master was better, and this misplaced loyalty galled him.

They fought over whose master was better?

That's sorta like arguing about how spoiled milk is better than moldy cheese or something.
