I just considered. I got Project 64, and downloaded

all without spending a penny. It kind of reeks of piracy...

Curse the ill fortune that led you to me.

I don't really see a problem with emulation as long as it's not current or last gen. Especially if said games and consoles aren't even legally for sale anymore.

P.S. I'm referring to moral issues. Of course downloading a ROM is piracy.

I say that if there is no way to obtain it legally then it's probably okay.

Emulation is not software piracy. Downloading a ROM is software piracy. It's copyrighted, you don't have the right to copy it, but you did so anyway. Simple.

I don't have a problem with it, but it is piracy by definition.

I see emulation as okay in only one way: if it was never exported. Like Mother 3.

That being said, I've never emulated myself.

Emulating a console to play commercial games you don't own is piracy, no ifs, ands, or buts.

Whether you feel it's immoral is up to you. As a software engineer myself, I don't really pirate anything, because the next person pirating might be stealing out of my pocket. :P I've had friends laid off because of companies losing out to piracy. It's never the "evil" executives that feel the pinch, it's always the lowest levels of the companies.

I just got Project 64 a few hours ago, myself, to play Paper Mario (which I haven't played before). If I had the money and/or Wi-Fi to purchase it from the Wii's VC, I would. But I don't, so them's the breaks.

Of course it's piracy. How could it not be piracy? Why did the possibility of it not being piracy even enter your head? That's kind of weird.

The only emulation that isn't piracy is when you only use it to play homebrewed ROMs, which are pretty rare.

Downloading ROMs is piracy. So, yes, you are a pirate.

ROMs are pretty bad, but I'm okay with them if:

  • A. No Export for You
  • B. I already own the game.
  • C. If there are next to no copies of that particular game.

I have no problem with downloading ROMs of Arcade games, but I'll have to delete them sooner or later.

I never got why someone would want a ROM of a game they already have.

[up][up]Probably because they lost their copy of the game.

Other than that, I agree with you.

EDIT: There are some games that don't fare well in emulation, like graphical glitches, or in one case, having the enemies scroll up instead of down!

Of course, they got better.

^x3 Replacing a lost copy, backing up triple-digit hour saves, being able to play a game that you already own in a more convenient manner (e.g. emulators for 3rd and 4th-Gen consoles on portable devices), oh yeah and being able to patch one's games with hacks of various natures.

And "Reality" is unveiled. What did it want...? What did it see...? What did it hear...? What did it think...? What did it do...?

[up][up][up]Tool-assisted speedruns, of course. Also ROM hacks.

Actually, I think most of the RO Ms I currently have I own legitimate copies of. The only exceptions are stuff like early Fire Emblem games and the Earthbound series which I can't get at all.

Belief or disbelief rests with you.

There was an NES game in 2000 and a Dreamcast game in 2010, dead is hard to define.

To be honest, I don't really emulate, but I did so a few times, mainly to record footage of DS games since there's not really any other way to do so.

You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!
