Isn't it already suffering from a certain degree of Hype Backlash already?

Personally, the style dissonance is what makes it even more effective.

^I agree. The subversion of your expectations is the entire point.

Well, for me, subversion NEVER works better straight play, at least in character designs. Maybe it's because I have affinity to animes with dark/grim designs, like Hellsing and Kara No Kyoukai. Both of them are very horrifying (and awesome) and I like how the art style matches perfectly to the series.

Please disregard my opinion. I'm not watching the series (for now) therfore has no right to criticize about it in any way.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni doesn't even come fucking close. Seriously.

Except maybe the Matsuribayashi-hen manga. Maybe.

For the record, Madoka only unnerved me once: that scene in Episode 10. You know the one.

Considering how badly Higurashi got me even in anime form... if what you say is true, then holy shit... do want. But do not want ongoing, so I'll have to wait.

[up][up]That wasn't in episode 10 that was 8. I am pretty sure its Madoka's transformation?

No, it's spoilers

^^ It's more on psychologically scary, not guro or anything.

[up][up][up] DO WANT!!

[up] the most horrifying scenes from Higurashi are horrifying because of the psychological aspects. Most scenes that had just guro tended to be Narm. That's why I found the first mini arc to be the scariest of all.

Judging by AM Vs I've seen of Elfen Lied (which didn't faze me except for a single one that does suspense fairly well) and by HOW badly Higurashi got me, it did get me mostly psychologically. I mean, that scene with Satoko is already pretty bad, cause I care about the character... but that "if you say sorry 1000 times" line is what truly kicked the scene into overdrive for me. And so on and so forth. Granted, some moments wouldn't have been as scary without Kenji Kawai's subliminal soundtrack... but Yuki Kajiura is just as amazing.

I don't know, I just wasn't fazed by Higurashi much. I'm much more disturbed by the scene in the spoiler in Madoka, for some reason.

I wasn't actively scared, just disturbed. I was like "ookay... O___O" when I watched that scene in the spoiler.

[up] I should be watching the series instead of asking this, but is there any scene that makes you go, "Oh god, oh god, oh god!", ya know, real tense? I felt that way during the first arc. It was the best one and the rest was too unsubtle for my taste.

I was talking about the scene in Madoka, not Higurashi. For Higurashi, yeah, I guess the closest that got me to that was the fingore scene.

[up] My GOD, yes, that scene was horrifying (well, just disturbing for you) for me. Most scenes, when I see people die, I can pull Jerkass and says "Lulz, people dies XD" but at that scene... I couldn't even watch it the first time and second time and now, I can't make fun of that scene because it was too agonizing to watch.

Yeah. I was like "ick."

But yeah, that scene in Madoka really made me go "o-okay... wait, what? Seriously, did I just see that? O___O"

So much that I had to rewind it thrice to convince myself I just saw it happen.

  • The "FULFILL THE PROPHECY!" scene in Serial Experiments Lain.
  • Most of Johan's appearances in Monster, but the orphan-on-the-edge-of-a-roof scene and Kinderheim 511 in particular.
  • Every scene involving Brau 1589 in Pluto. 500 ZEUS A BODY
  • Tetsuo's transformation in Akira.

[up] Strangely enough, Tetsuo didn't freak me out at all. The only thing that freaked me out about him was the dream he had before his awakening with the toys. Those goddamn toys.

Madoka hasn't succeeded in scaring me. It has disturbed me and shocked me into silence followed by laughter though. Things that have done this...

The Mami headmunch scene. The Mami goes back fuck crazy and attempts triple murder suicide because it seems like the best option to her now completely broken psyche scene.

As a child I watched the ending of AKIRA. Tetsuo's transformation gave me nightmares and the images have haunted me since.

Lain's always left me feeling incredibly tense. Never really scared. Then Alien Lain reared her creepy head.

Higurashi was many things. It was not scary. Tense at times maybe, but not scary. Certainly not the violence...then again I find the violence sexy so...yeah.

For whatever reason, the ending to episode 7 hit me as hard that part in episode 10 of Madoka. Though I do agree that it hasn't really scared me, only disturbed me.

Maaaaaaaaaan, maybe it's that Higurashi was my first real horror anything, really, but I seem to be much more susceptible than most... helps that Kenji Kawai is amazing and that I loved the character cast, despite DEEN's simplifications.

If it's as you say, though, it means I'm going to have epic freakouts at Madoka... whenever it gets finished.

I also remembered another one: Asuka's mental breakdown from Evangelion episode 22.
