General Sonic The Hedgehog thread

Shadow has outgrown being Sonic's rival, Shadow is doing his own thing but I do see your point. Sonic and Shadow could had their rivalry explored however Shadow had become his own character other than Sonic's rival and I really like that way especially if Shadow is gonna get short end of the stick.

Shadow being his rival is kind of The Artifact at this point lol.

They're still pretty good foils though.

Knuckles being a rival is also that...

I find Shadow more enjoyable as a character if he keeps a streak of immaturity. Sends him straight into The Comically Serious, and works quite well with him being biologically 16 forever.

Seriously, this pre-battle smug grin tells us everything.◊ Guy enjoys having a good fight just because.

• Knuckles works best as The Lancer. The conflict manifests as different ways to tackle the same issue, but, at the end of the day, they are working together. They clash because they are different, not because they are on different sides.

• Shadow works quite well as Hero of Another Story. Once they meet, if they feel they are in each other's way, they'll fight before talking, because both of them are egocentrical and rash. They clash because they are similar.

• Metal Sonic is a homicidal android. Prime The Dragon material, more competent than even The Big Bad, but that single-minded obsession to one-up Sonic proves to be his undoing quite often.

• Silver doesn't quite work as a rival, I'd say. Kid from the Future is fine, but I do not quite see his personality being one to have a rivalry. He wants to save the future, he is at worst a naive templar, but he stops once he is shown to be wrong. Interesting to have around tho.

• Blaze is quite similar to Knuckles.

• And Jet is a bragart sports fan Sonic indulges because he likes the sport and is competitive.

Sonic & Blaze actually get along though compared to Sonic & Knuckles lol.

I wouldn't say Sonic and Knuckles don't get along, but they veer into Vitriolic Best Buds. Well, as long as Knuckles doesn't go into his Sonic X persona and random bouts of agression and idiotic behaviour.

Chill and calm unless you touch his Emerald is best Knuckles.

A bit late, but I like everything about Riders except the gameplay and adherence to fast characters not running.

As if there wasn't precedence for Sonic using a board...

No adherence to them cheating either, I guess.

It just bugs me when the guy whose thing is running fast rarely ever runs in racing games.

If Sonic ran in races where everybody else drove a car, he'd win in seconds.

Sonic's fair sport, he's not going to run if it ain't a leg race.

Both of these could be true, but the invention of Extreme Gear provides a Hand Wave for Sonic not being able to win as easily.

That said, it's a neat facet of Sonic's personality that he wants to win fair and square and will handicap himself in order to do so. Yeah sure he could beat Jet if he ran, but it means nothing if he doesn't beat Jet at his own game.

It does kind of paint Sonic as a Mary Sue character, not only being a character who effortlessly breezes through every challenge but can also handicap himself, participate in a sport he's never attempted before, and come out better than an experienced veteran of said sport.

But it does say a lot about Sonic and how he rolls.

When you list it out like that, I would have liked it if 2006 or some of the later games had pitted Sonic and Shadow against each other this way. Have Shadow work for the government, GUN, which already has a beef with Sonic since last time he was in the public eye he caused a giant GUN truck to crash (this after Sonic probably destroyed millions of dollars worth of government property). And let's face it, Sonic robbed that one store in Sonic Adventure that was keeping a Chao Egg in its front window. And he's probably guilty of some trespassing if Radical City is anything to go by. Some citizens have probably noticed him riding a rocket-propelled missile across skyscrapers. His one little attempt to help Johnny Law with Chaos won't stand up against his multitude of crimes in court.

Where was I? Shadow being on GUN's side and Sonic being distinctly Chaotic Neutral would be a fun direction for their conflict.

See I want to believe that but...

Metal Sonic could take him.

right right, Eggman is faster than both my mistake.

Real talk though, that's one of the few things to stay consistent between those two. Even when Sonic got the Boost, it wasn't too long before Shadow got it.

He's designed to be better And faster than Sonic tho...and he doesn't run, he flies.

I'm still not exactly sure how putting rockets on his shoes lets him be as fast as Sonic. You'd think Eggman would have built several machines capable of matching Sonic by this point then - and yet Metal is the only one to do so.

Not saying that Shadow isn't as fast as Sonic, but it's bizarre that he is; I mean, relatively speaking given that Sonic is a hedgehog who can't swim; however downplayed that weakness might be at this point.

Chaos powers. Just like Super Sonic flies faster than Sonic runs despite not moving his legs.

Randomness likes how that Olympics game makes the character's speed more accurate...

Like, Sonic, Shadow, and Metal are just the fastest...and you can't pass them unless you boost.

So by this logic, Silver is faster than Blaze.

Oh yea, that's true lol. Sonic & Shadow literally booked it before Eggman boosted ahead.

It also helps that the CPU can actually get to max speed in that game also...

Sonic Forces to have Denuvo.
