Looks like Telltale games wanted to do Scott Pilgrim

I only just discovered the Scott Pilgrim game last week, as well as the movie and the chiptune band that provided the game's soundtrack.

That said, I'm not surprised about this. I've heard that the creator was pretty much done with Scott Pilgrim after the movie and game. Shame, but oh well.

WARNING: The following is not a troll post but rather my honest opinion about the Scott Pilgrim phenomenon. It is likely to be controversial. You have been warned.

Basically, the creator of Scott Pilgrim is all butthurt because the movie sucked and the game wasn't that popular (although it was decent) but really he only has himself to blame as the original comic is just not that good. The only thing separating him from the many Marty Stu/Mary Sue webcomics out there is that he got published (and with vanity press services available, that's not such a big deal).

The plot is ludicrous. I understand the whole seven evil exes thing is supposed to be a spoof of video game plots, but when you take a video game plot and apply it other mediums, it just doesn't work. This is apparent in the types of games he chooses to spoof (brawlers), the plots in those games are nothing more than simple "connect-the-dot plots" if you will, a means to explain why you're playing the game and nothing more. It just never clicked with me. Oh sure you can praise the plot for featuring lots of geek culture references, but I'd rather not be reminded of other better things I could be doing instead of reading/watching/playing Scott Pilgrim.

Second (and this is subjective as all hell, seriously YMMV) the art is terrible. If I'm reading a graphic novel, 50% of my total enjoyment is going to come from the graphic part. Before anyone jumps my ass, I'm not one of those who prefer true manga style, I actually like the Western stuff like Watchmen and Sin City and stuff. But O'Malley's art looks like Craig Mc Cracken turned into a 13-year old girl with a Deviant Art account. Again, subjective as all hell, but the art turned me off.

Third (and this is only about the movie), Michael Cera is a DOUCHEBAG. He is such a douche that I could run up, stab him in the face and receive the Congressional Medal Of Honor, a gold-plated Porcshe and a high-five from Jesus. Seriosuly.

But anyway, to sum it up, if the original work isn't that good, don't expect better from the adaptations.

Michael Cera is a DOUCHEBAG

We can agree on this much.

Never read the comics, so I don't have an opinion on that.

The art style I half agree with. It's okay, but everyone just looks like each other if it's not in color, which is kinda bugging.

Agreed. I don't know why people even like Scott Pilgrim anyway. What's the big deal about it?

It makes them think "What if No More Heroes was written in another medium."?

The OEL is difficult to tell characters apart. And the movie...has way too much singing and music and too much Scott being an ass to Knives. And not enough action.

Plus, Ramona is one of the most unlikable heroine I've ever seen. It's one thing to have one ex...but 7, and her reasons for dumping them do not make her sympathetic at all.

In the second/third to last book (unsure which one), EVERYONE's being an ass :/

I liked the series, and I'd love to see the movie, but it's not the ultimate fiction it's praised as.

I'm iPhone posting so I'll be brief. Scott Pilgrim is at it core, Twilight For Boys. That is, adolescent wish fulfillment that bares so little in common with actual human behavior that renders it unattainable by the masses. What saves it being tossed in the rubbish heap like Twilight is it's absolute refusal to take itself seriously up until the end. Yes it ludicrous but that's the point.

I'd be down for a post-comic adventure game from tell tale though. Oh well.

Is it really an adolescent's wish fullfillment to have a slutty girlfriend who had 7 ex's though?...many of those ex's having actual powers while you yourself have nothing but a fist?

Speaking of Scott Pilgrim, it's nearly impossible to find a good Let's Play of this game...

I want to see this game played co-op in a difficulty other than normal, with decent resolution...

Hm. I guess I'm just easily entertained. My exposure to it is mostly towards the game (I love beat-em-ups) and I've only saw the tail-end of the movie, so I can't comment on it.

[up]x7 I'm assuming the mass of geek-culture/video game references have something to do with it. Hell, my very first encounter with the series was me finding something in the 360's avatar marketplace that said "Sex Bomb-omb" and wondering why there was a Nintendo reference on the XBOX.

I'm actually far more interested in the whole "grow up and get a life" aspect of Scott Pilgrim's story.

I love it when people make NES references and forget that the SNES existed.

Nostalgia can be so bloody stupid at times.

I forget isn't Ramona like 20 something at the start. 7exes isn't that much considering they go back as far as middle school. I racked up like 5 exes in high school alone and I was the shy virgin in my circle of friends.

So yeah 7 is hardly slutty. I not ever certain she slept with half of them. Well Giddeon for sure. And probably the chick. Beyond that though? .

I'm actually far more interested in the whole"grow up and get a life" aspect of Scott Pilgrim's story.

I actually thought that this was the main plot of the comics, going by what a friend had said about it. From what I saw of the movie, Scott seemed like a jerk, even at the end (it's why I'm wary of actually watching the entire movie and/or reading the comics. The plot seems to work better as a video game plot).

My main beef with the movie was that everyone was an ass. Certainly didn't make me want to read the source material. :/

Nice fight scenes, though.

I love Scott Pilgrim, I don't praise it as high literature or anything, but the comics are entertaining, the movie was some of the most fun I've had in the theater, and the game is nice, albeit with some Fake Difficulty.

With that disclaimer in mind: I don't see how the author is butthurt at all. He said he didn't think Scott Pilgrim would work as an adventure game, not that he's too good for Telltale or anything like that. He even said props to them. Really, where'd you get "butthurt"?

As for various opinions about the franchise, all I can offer is why I like it. It's not just the video game references, although I admit the movie had me once the intro chimes from A Link To The Past played. It's that the universe — both in the comics and in the movie — feels very much like a video game with its own inherent, consistent set of video game rules. I hate to use this argument, but...that's not for everyone. It's totally okay if you didn't like that. But I quite enjoyed seeing people explode into coins and points popping out of bosses' heads, because as far as I was concerned, that worked for the universe that the comics/film set up.

Yeah, I was expecting something a bit more dismissive when I clicked the link. I guess he just thinks that a brawler works better for the game.

I mean, how would you even do the Ex battles, except for Todd's, in Adventure game format?

I've only seen the movie, and I enjoyed that. The action was great, and the humour was funny.

Just a bit.

Do Telltales only make AdventureGames though? If so, I may have to ignore that Back To The Future game that just came out...
