The funny thing about the tagline: John Galt isn't even in this one (other than a five-second cameo by the director).
More Buscemi at http://forum.reelsociety.com/Is it just me, or is everyone in that trailer white, save for one black guy?
There was a Hispanic guy there too.
More Buscemi at http://forum.reelsociety.com/Was just about to post this, saw it when reading the Snopes message-boards. Does seem kind of silly to update the setting, but then keep the story about a railroad company- since railroad transportation is thought of something of a "liberal issue" now.

why
The dialogue is still as awkward-sounding as ever. And Part I? So much for my Adaptation Distillation hopes.
I'm just anticipating Roger Ebert's review.
Dear God, I can't wait for this movie. Yes, I'm serious. Because odds are it is going to be crap-tastic. I can't be too surprised this exists. This is the age of cheap remakes after all, only this time of a really old book.
The only other movie that I can think of with 2 parts is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
I wonder that, if this movie were to bomb, whether or not they would make the second one. Whether they would actually make a part 2 to something that no-one liked. That would make for somewhat of a delicious irony wouldn't it? Unless it's already been filmed if not yet edited etc. like the case is with Deathly Hallows.
yeyAtlas Shrugged = Battlefield Earth?

That is Brilliance, no Fridge involved. Objectivism is so similar to Scientology in so many ways... how did I not realise this before?!
Good comparison.
RE the Part I thing, consider The Golden Compass and (probably) The Last Airbender- Franchise Killer for both.
Deathly Hallows was about to do the Part I thing because there were a bunch of successful movies in the series prior to it, and it was a good movie in its own right.
HodorSince the second part of Battlefield Earth film is never going to get made, I suppose this is the next best thing.
^^^^ "While you were still learning to SPELL YOUR NAME, I was being trained, TO CONQUER INDUSTRIES."
What? Sorry, I got distracted by reading the smug and asinine comments/arguments in the comment section of the trailer. I'm anticipating the incoming wank this is going to cause.
Anyway, I agree with the OP. It has the production values of a low-budget parody and the acting...x.O Errp. Maybe it's just the fact that the dialogue and characters in the original book were pretty stiff in the first place. If they make more movies of this, would one just be his loooooooong ass speech? Considering that Rand supposedly went nuts when the director tried to abridge the six minute speech in The Fountainhead, I have a feeling they wouldn't cut it down.
I recognised a couple of the actors from The West Wing.
Interesting. That's pretty much conclusive evidence they have no scruples about what they appear in whatsoever.
I think unabridged, that speech is the size of a whole movie. It'd be fascinating to see them do that as a movie. The reviews would look amazing. "Do I even need to criticize this? Its one guy! He's jjust standing there droning endlessly! I've forgotten my children! Please, anyone, help me!
... Is that Big Love from house?
Wow, that is a terrible trailer. This film These films look like they're going to be absolutely awful. I can't wait! Especially for the speech, although now that Rand is not alive to harangue anyone about it, I think there's a better chance of it being cut down than the one in The Fountainhead.

You're an ad hominem attack!I could barely stand 60 pages of "Existence Exists!" and "A is A!" in print (there's also the overused "life and death" rhetorical metaphors, the Opinion Myopia in regards to the labour force, etc.). Imagine having to sit through 2 hours of that pretentious shit.
This thread makes me wish that I hadn't lost my Atlas Shrugged liveblog.

Ah, it was you who did it, was it? I knew someone had, but I never attempted to read it thoroughly, because, well, even Atlas Shrugged interspersed with scathing criticism is still Atlas Shrugged. However, Atlas Shrugged acted as terribly as it was in that trailer might be able to shift my view from "good grief, why did anyone allow this nutcase a pen?" to "this is kind of awesome".
You're an ad hominem attack!^^^I always pictured that if (or I guess now) a movie(s) was made of Atlas Shrugged and did not follow the book to a T, Ayn Rand would rise from the grave and wreak her vengence.
I'm guessing her vengeance would take the form of a week-long speech about intellectual property?
You're an ad hominem attack!Yes, probably. And then it would get made into a movie 50 years later.
Still, this is going to be interesting to see how it turns out. Judging by the quality of the trailer, I think it'll be a nice bit of So Bad, It's Good, if it's not incredibly dull.
The actors do help in making the dialogue sound like a parody of itself, but I'm not putting my money on enjoying it even as So Bad It's Good, especially if they keep in all the subplots and Padding. But as I said, there's always Ebert.
I'm really hoping it'll be So Bad, It's Good, but I know that the source material is dull beyond belief and in any case, it's a film about railroad and steel magnates. That's not interesting.

You're an ad hominem attack!
Oh I'm real. And its closer than we think. Its also more retarded than we think.

I honestly thought this was a parody. I did. But so far, no comedy team has come foward, so apparently its going ahead. First off, the fact that its set in modern day but hasn't updated for shit is already really funny.
The part 1 thing also just makes me laugh. Because I know the last part will be only the monologue.
Then there's the name dropping, like its supposed to still be a mystery. "Who is John Galt?" "He is a selfish prick, an answer anyone with the internet found out after you kept repeating the fucking question"
