Spyro gets re-re-booted as... an AR game?

Wait. Crash Bandicoot is dead for good? That's kinda a letdown, because I actually heard good things about Crash of the Titans. Maybe, it's for the best.

Is this the same Activision that live through the older days of video gaming, with Pitfall?

@Cider: AR = Augmented Reality. Basically, you buy real toys, but via a camera/scanner, you can scan them into the game to do things with them.

AR = Augmented Reality. Though I don't get how having a toy that pretty much operates as a memory card with a preset character counts as that.

And I haven't followed gaming news closesly for a while, so I thought the things about Activison abusing franchises and grinding them to dust was exaggeration.

Hm, well, besides being a money hole, I don't see too much of a problem.

I think kids of the new generation deserve to have new games though. The original Spyro wasn't like that and he hasn't even been in a game for years, so the kids who its targeted too won't know who he is.

Well, that's kinda true.

So far theres only two complaints for the game: Spyro is butt ugly and it's an obvious cash ploy.

And they should also sell the game that comes with just one figure. Call it a "Single pack" as Starter Pack has already been taken by the 4 figure & game pack. If 4 figures and the game is 70$ than cutting 3 of them should lower the price nicely.

Well, his last game was in 2008. Not really all that long ago; certainly long enough for kids to still be playing said game...

'Cause something like that is rarely, if ever, a storytelling device.

Experience has taught me to investigate anything that glows.

It's interesting to see how concepts can get mangled over the years. Spyro was a family game, now it's a children's game. There's definatly a difference: I played Spyro when it first came out as a child, i played it later when i was a teenager, and i have the sudden urge to dig out my dusty copy of Year Of The Dragon to play it again as an adult.

This, however, is purely aimed at kids. Not necessarilly a bad thing, mind, but this is activision we're talking about. It's not going to have the charm or humor or sly references the originals had. I never played the post-insomniac games and really that trend looks permanent.

I'm not mad at this development. I'm just a little... Melancholy. People are missing out. The kids are missing out.

Is it just me, or is it obvious this was supposed to be a new franchise entirely, and Activision decided it wouldn't sell well enough, so they forced the developers to put Spyro in? You know what? If Spyro wasn't in this I'd be perfectly fine with this. Almost. Actually, no. Because this is exactly the same as buying DLC, only to find out it was included on the disc in the first place and you had to PAY to use something you already own! BUT TEN TIMES WORSE, because it's expensive as hell! And on top of that, you put poor, poor Spyro, who's almost dead and free from bad games  ^*

is suddenly yanked back into the land of the living, given a redesign that completely misses the point of the character, and worst of all, doomed to 'star' in the inevitable stream of shitty sequels.

Anyway, any word on what the actual gameplay will be like? Will it be a straight-up action game or will it be a Collect-a-thon like the classics?

I played the original Spyro games as a child, and The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning. The latter changed a lot of what I liked about the originals, but it was still fairly fun to play.

That said, what the fuck is this shit. And what have they done to Spyro's design?!

Ugh. Spyro looks like something out of Dantes Inferno dipped in grape juice.
