I'm sure we don't want to turn this into "genres some people don't like." We need o nail down the definition of ghetto - marketers avoid labeling works as these genres because of their fringe appeal

Well I think that a Rom Com Anti Ghetto could be worthy of amking a trope.

[up][up] That's a good point.

I think Bodice Rippers would be the one with the Ghetto. Or at least is seen as something to be ashamed of. I think. It pops up on Guilty Pleasure a lot.

If you specifically want a definition for the difference between something with a Ghetto and not, I'd say that the dearth of Genre Blender is likely to be the cause. While you can apply maybe one or two other genres, they're the equivalent of the B-plot in focus.

I disagree about the Rom Com anti-ghetto being tropable.

As to the definition of Genre Ghetto itself, I think it has mostly to do with the way the genre is viewed by those outside it. If it has a devoted following of fans, but those fans are not considered part of the mainstream and the genre itself is not considered on par with normal or "legitimate" media, then it's a Genre Ghetto. This works for the Sci Fi Ghetto, the Comic Book example, and the Children's Show Ghetto: there are fans of each, but they're treated with scorn by outsiders and are definitely not considered part of the mainstream.

The Genre Ghetto is a real thing, in that many "serious" literature fans (especially in academia) look down on genre fiction in general as inferior to "true" art. We already cover some of that info in Lit Fic (from the other side, as it were). I don't think we need a detailed breakdown with separate articles on each genre's ghetto. Yes, SF may be seen as geekier than mysteries, and bodice-rippers may be scorned by geeks and literati alike, but it boils down to basically the same thing. Genre fiction is seen as more popular and less "real".

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.

[up][up][up][up][up]What would that be? Marketers misleading calling films romantic comedies when they aren't? I can't think of any examples of that off-hand.

So, do we have consensus to merge into Genre Ghetto, with a description about Genre Fiction being seen as less legitimate than its mainstream counterparts?

[up][up]There's actually some examples of that on the Trailers Always Lie page (really, a good spot to see Hollywood's general attitude towards a lot of things), but I think the idea s/he was going for was more like this:

I was thinking more of how they aren't very highly-regarded by (primarily male) audiences and sort of looked-down upon for being 'just' Rom Coms or 'just' romances that have no artistry or value beyond shallowness; it's like how "girlfriends forcing guys to watch a romantic movie" is kind of a running joke in society.

It would work better as an in-universe thing then anything else, though.

[up][up] I concede to a merge, but I'd say it's worthwhile to have some distinctions between genres as to the reasons why they are specifically exempted from True Art. Like how Horror could be seen as cheap and exploitative, or how Sci-Fi is geeky escapism for boys, or ''potentially'' how Romance is mushy escapism for girls, or how kids' entertainment has to be lazy mindless fluff because little kids don't know any better. Just brainstorming here.

Whatever happens, I'd vote for a general Genre Ghetto page.

I'd be comfortable with a merge, keeping Sci Fi Ghetto and Fantasy Ghetto as Internal Subtropes.

Rhymes with "Protracted."

[up][up][up]That would have to be careful not to veer into Complaining About People Not Liking the Show, though. While I personally could care less if everyone who upholds the concept of a genre ghetto threw themselves off a bridge, TV Tropes should not go down that direction, which listing reasons like that could easily cause it to do.

We all are agreed on the Genre Ghetto idea, though, right?

I’ll vote for genre ghetto.

Although, it does make me wonder what “the main stream” is right now it just sounds like academia itself a small group.

Not exactly - more like the kind of stuff you find in a bookstore's "General Fiction" section, or some other name of that nature. That includes Lit Fic, but it's not limited to it.
