[up] A significant number of people still didn't like Raiden even when MGS 4 rolled around. The high-heels, make-up and his almost Gode Mode Sueish abilties didn't sit well with a lot of people.

That said, I like Raiden in all of his appearances. He was actually my proper introduction to the MGS series, since I started with MGS 2 and didn't know how to get the Tanker chapter.

Castlevania: Order Of Ecclesia. I actually like the smaller areas and emphasis on combat. I should do a new playthrough from scratch.

Pokemon. Every generation, people are complaining that it was Ruined Forever for any small thing. I saw a complaint that Gen V ruined Pokemon forever because it had a snow cone Pokemon. Or complaints that evolved forms are too similar. Generation I was just as bad as the others in that aspect, with things like Grimer and Muk which were both just purple slime, Diglett and Magnemite both getting two more of them added and claiming that it was a new evolution, etc. Not to mention the naming genius who thought of "Pidgey, Pidgeotto, and Pidgeot."

Metroid Other M also was one that didn't bother me. I avoided TV tropes and forums for news about the game to prevent spoilers, and I was quite surprised that people disliked it at all. Granted, the controls were not my favorite setup and it didn't have as much exploring and replayability as most games in the series, but I didn't think it was anywhere close to being terrible. I certainly don't understand complaints about the plot/voice acting, as I thought the plot was interesting and the voices were believable.

But I did notice that especially the third generation gets a lot of hate...

I never understood why. I mean, it's Pokémon. It's all the same eight-badge elite-five evil-team business. They're all gonna be equally good except in the minutiae, where I thought third gen was just fine.

Probably because of the large amount of surfing needed at the end of the game, the lack of day and night, oh and the fact there was no way to get most of the Kanto and Johto Pokemon when the games first came out.

You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!

General complaints I've heard about Gen III, even now.

  • Pokemon designs suck/look alien(?)/look like Digimon(??).
  • Too much water.
  • More species, meaning it'd be harder to complete the Pokedex (let's forget that Nintendo of America got rid of the Gotta Catch 'Em All Catchphrase by this point and that completing the Pokedex is meant to be a challenge anyway).
  • The biggest one, the inability to transfer Gen I and II Pokemon to the new games, forcing everyone that had put in all those hours of training in the previous Gens to start over.

That's about all I can remember.

everything else about the game is damned near perfect.
Wait what?

Chrono Cross also ditched the fluid movement in battle. They didn't go full random battles, but they did faulter back onto screen changes. The gameplay mechanics themselves aren't as good as Trigger.

Chrono Cross isn't a bad game, in my opinion. Just not as good as the original. Chrono Trigger was a revolutionary, bleeding edge RPG. While Cross innovated hardly anything. Games such as the Tales of series still haven't escaped the screen switch, and games that have such as XII haven't done it very properly(doing it so badly, that many people were calling for the "old days" of screen switches and random battles, seeing that as the "problem" of Final Fantasy XII battle mechanic).

The problem is that things need to be fluid instead of blocky. Chrono Trigger not only did away with random battles, but it did away with battle transitions by having very intelligently laid out monsters and situations. Leading to an incredibly immersive feel where there wasn't any disconnect in any area, all palletes and sprites worked perfectly together. And combat was fast paced and interesting, even though it was still essentially turn based. You learned moves that were appropriate and interesting for the time, and almost none of them were useless. Magic moves would fill up a large portion of the screen and leave you in awe, without looking ridiculous. The ratio of things was just simply, perfectly laid out. The enemies in Chrono Cross, and how they are laid on areas, give off a feeling of being disconnected. And the battles give off a feeling of being disconnected. Without the fast paced teamwork than Trigger gives. And I haven't even gotten into the aggrivating useless attacks that Cross gives you.

I'm not anti-Cross by any means, some of my favourite characters are from it, such as Harle. But to say "everything else other than the plot is perfect" is far some the truth. The gameplay mechanics are a fraction as good as they were in Trigger.

Trigger was just boring and nowhere near as revolutionary to me as people said. Then again I never played the thing when it first came out and had known about the glory of multiple endings since my earliest days thanks to Breath of Fire and Phantasy Star.

[up][up]That's a YMMV point of huge contentions though, to you maybe a transition "breaks immersion" but to a person who has a different definition of immersion it doesn't, and to those who rather care the game is good rather then how much you're "immersed" it's a moot point.

There's also that. I feel more immersed in Lunar 2, Dragon Quest 1, and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest than I do Trigger.

^^Modding for it isn't much like Tiberium Wars, DRM is/was a bit of a deal-breaker, higher amounts of Fanservice (and not really in a good way), and maybe some other things.

Still, it's perhaps not as bad as C&C4, if only because it would probably make a good FPS spinoff.

Wait, there are people who didn't like Order of Ecclesia?

Everyone I talk to says it's the best in the series, next to either Super Castlevania IV or Symphony of the Night.

Really? I've seen more people say it's one of the better DS titles at most, but not to the extent of calling it on par with Castlevania IV and Symphony. And I've also seen many others give it flak, generally for not starting in the castle, being really difficult, and having a "fanservicey" Emotionless Girl protagonist (despite Shanoa not really being that servicey and her emotionless-ness being a plot point).

Not being as easy as the other Metroidvania's is usually cited as a point in its favor. As is the varied locations.

The real problem with Chrono Cross is that it simply was too big for its britches. It tried a ridiculous number of tropes, but had no idea what to do with them, especially in a story context. It ended up flashy and incoherent rather than innovative and deep.

edit: On topic, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic And The Black Knight (definitely not a good game, but not horrible), Fallout3, Mass Effect 2 (fanboys are very loud), Wind Waker, Super Smash Bros Brawl, and any Pokemon Generation aside from 2 which really was lackluster.

Well some people I know think it's overrated or too fanservicy (lol Shanoa). One of them would keep giving me shit for not liking Dawn Of Sorrow better.

Also, OoE is hard.

When Dm C was revealed, it seemed like I was one of six people who did not absolutely hate it. And to this day I remain cautiously optimistic about it.

Final Fantasy XIII also gets a lot of hate. I have been enjoying it, despite its pretty glaring flaws.
