- Need For Speed:
- Need For Speed III: Hot Pursuit.
- Need For Speed 4: High Stakes.
- Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed.
- Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit.
- Test Drive 6 and possibly Unlimited 2.
- Fatal Racing (known as Whiplash in US).
- Screamer (known in Germany as Bleifuss).
- That Asphalt game for the DS.
- Mario Kart DS.
- That GT Racing game from the 90's by Electronic Arts and Slightly Mad Studios.
I know, it's a ton of recommendations, but those are games I have played (or look worth playing).

"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelMario Kart games are a blast. I play the Wii one with my brother when he's over. I have his copy of the DS game so I will be playing that.
I also really love Diddy Kong Racing, Kirby Air Ride, Sonic Riders, the horror that is Sonic R, F-Zero, and Wipeout.
I don't play these games very often or for very long but they're good fun when I feel like it.
Lego Racer is a fun little game too and that soundtrack is awesome. Crash Team Racing was the shit though I can't say the same about the sequels... Most of these are good party games...The Sonic games are pretty crappy compared to the others but I like them...

If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahBurnout was pretty good, and I've heard good things about Excite.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture Rack@Aon: Agreed. Also, get Lego Racers 2, it's pretty good in its own right.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelIf you're looking for arcade racing games as in physical machines in an arcade, then go look for an arcade with the Initial D games in it. Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune's also supposed to be good but nobody in Pennsylvania has it so I haven't had a chance to try it.
With regards to console racing games, Gran Turismo (any of them) if you're looking for something realistic and Burnout Paradise if you're looking for something a bit less so. Also, pick up Trackmania Nations Forever for the PC, it's free and a fun arcadey racer.

I wonder if Ridge Racer Type 4 is that good. It seems like a repetitive game by modern console racing game standards.
http://twitter.com/raydere | http://raydere.tumblr.com^^ I would avoid Burnout Paradise for one very simple reason - lack of local multiplayer. I'd go with Takedown.
I've got one.
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. That game is badass, and I've played it. Though I've never used the online features (except for Limited Edition features), I assume that Autolog keeps you playing (if you play a time trial, and your friend beats you, it says "You gonna stand up for this? Kick his butt!")
But either way, I'd recommend the game. That, and it has an awesome stable of supercars... even without DLC.
That, and police cars. You can play as the police too.
"Seven is here too, dressed like the concept of choosing clothes that look nice together was an arcane secret far beyond their grasp."To anyone who owns Ridge Racers 2 (the second PSP Ridge Racer...as in the one game that was released in every major region except North America), is it worth owning if I already have the first Ridge Racers?
http://twitter.com/raydere | http://raydere.tumblr.comMario Kart 64,Super Mario Kart,F-Zero,Daytona USA,Super Burnout,the original Need for Speed,and Burnout
are some of my favorites, but I like racing games as a genre so the list really doesn't stop there

F-Zero, Mario Kart, and Wipeout all day, every day. For the first two, just be prepared for a lot of A.I. bastardry.
A few other recommendations not mentioned so far, put in console generation order:
16-bits :
- Micro Machines TT 96
- The Road Rash series
- Rock N Roll Racing
- The Super Monaco GP series
32-bits
- Colin Mc Rae Rally
- The Destruction Derby games
- Formula 1 97
- Sega Rally
- The TOCA Touring Cars games

"Your kindness gives me the presentiment I can be reborn. Now, I want to believe at least in you." - Kaori YaeI loved Diddy Kong racing. It had a much stronger single-player experience than mario kart and did a better job of rewarding driving skill and track knowledge while still having powerups and elements of randomness. Plus, hovercraft! A very underrated racer.
Well, the 3DS Mario Kart is supposed to have vehicles other than karts. Maybe they're borrowing ideas from DKR.
What, no love for Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing? For shame, people...
Experience has taught me to investigate anything that glows.x4 Hovercrafts, pshaw. The plane is where it's at.
Well, the hovercraft is good, too. I really liked the course design of that game, especially the ones in the last hidden world.
And the music! Awesome music throughout the entire soundtrack.
Yeah, DKR is one of my favorites too. Although the DS version isn't that good...
x3 There was Sonic Drift for Game Gear. It... wasn't good.
Funny it took this long for people to compare Mario Kart's extra vehicle's to Diddy Kong's. Doesn't anyone remember the bikes?
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackHm... I don't really like serious racing games, but I ansolutely adore party racing games.
The Mario Kart series and Diddy Kong Racing strikes my mind when it comes to quality racing games.
Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!
don't usually play them, but I'd love to pick them up.
What are some good arcade racing games, and some good console racing games? *
What racing games are your favorites? What are some good party ones (ala Mario Kart) and some good overall standard ones (ala Daytona USA and the like)?
