Yesterday I tried playing through Star Fox 64 entirely in cockpit mode, which I've always been turned off from using.

Though it might've been a mistake to try it on Expert Mode first...

Well, as Pepper says: Good luck.

And as to your previous post, I didn't think Command was bad, either. It's just that you can't make a next game without choosing a canon ending or making up a new one. I imagine the next game will make the Angler Emperor into what Andrew was in Assault, and continue with a new threat after that.

I'd like for the story to continue with Dash joining the team; I didn't much like the ending where he decided to follow in Andross's footsteps, but I did like the idea that the guy has potential in both ways.

Yeah, they'll probably pick whatever ending(s) is closest to getting back to the status quo in Star Fox Assault, or otherwise make a new ending. Or they might just consider the whole thing non-canon, which I can understand.

Though it would still be cool to see time travel introduced, since the franchise is already borrowing from everything in the genre. In particular, it'd be interesting to see NextGeneration!StarFox get involved in a story somehow.

I'm not realy feeling time travel for this series. Just a personal peference.

Now, extreme spacial travel is something I can get into. Perhaps introduce other star systems. Or maybe I just like the idea because I really loved the cutscene in Assault where they activated the warp gate.

If they ever do another 64-esque game, they need to bring back the warp segments that were in Meteo and Sector X.

In my story, I'd use the Warp Segments for the sake of easter egg clues and foreshadowing, rather than skipping levels entirely. The gameplay would consist of Campaigns that require the player to play through each level in the Campaign to register their score (if one runs out of lives, they have to start the Campaign all over again, but not the entire game), so Sequence Breaking wouldn't exactly fit there.

I'd even have a bonus Campaign that works a lot like Out of this Dimension!

What I'd like to see in a hypothetical future Star Fox game would be the ability to change your pilot and ship mid-story. Like, as you go along, certain characters will be with and you can choose between them as who you actually get to play. The ships determine things like bomb counts and weapon types, while the pilot might could change the maneuvers you can pull. Or something. I think it would be a good way to utilize the cast at the very least.

Oh, and hub area in the form of the Great Fox's interior. That would be neat. You'd have obvious things like the bridge and the hangar and whatnot. I dunno. I'm half delirious from lack of sleep, but this sounds like a good idea.

Command did have such unique stats and abilities for each character. You could even upgrade Fox's ship with either multi-lock or hyper-lazer depending on the path you took.

A hub would be interesting to see in a Star Fox game. I doubt they would make it as fleshed out / important as Peach's Castle or Delfino Plaza.

I am also pretty tired :D

Sorry to resurrect this thread but personally I think Nintendo can put a somewhat darker spin on the Star Fox universe. Preferably through a combined reboot and prequel work.

Here is my take on a possible reboot/prequel.

  • The Cornerian government is facing civil unrest.
  • On one planet mercenaries were sent to do black ops work. James McCloud, Peppy Hare, and Pigma Dengar were among those sent.
  • Towards the end of the campaign James refused further orders from the Cornerian military, as those orders became increasingly cruel and horrific.
  • James was betrayed and killed by Pigma as usual. Peppy had to keep mum lest he also meet the same fate.
  • News ultimately got out about the death toll on the planet, but the Cornerian military shifted as much blame as it could onto the late McCloud.

Subsequent games could be about Fox attempting to clear his father's name and unraveling the conspiracy behind the coverup.

I'm not sure if dark and edgy is a concept that combines well with fluffy animals....

Perhaps something like Kid Icarus' tone; where the suffering of humanity at the hands of the gods is used as counterpoint to the more predominant light humour, might work?

I think I could make something like that work. Although not with the Star Fox-crew and franchise, since it's already so well-known for being super-silly, so suddenly changing it to something dark and edgy would just be jarring. Plus, their names already don't lend themselves to serious stories, to be honest...

It is not like I want it to be uberdark.

I just want it to have some more serious dramatic moments that test the spirit and resolve of the protagonists. Also the Cornerian military is kind of in the background in most of these games. To have a General Ripper be in command of a portion of that force in opposition to Fox and his friends would help to bring it to the foreground.

Also I was also think maybe we can have something like Borderlands at least terms of playable characters.

  • Fox- A jack-of-all trades soldier who is good with a variety of weapons and tactics. Likewise, his piloting skills is on par for land vehicles, small watercraft, and air-space fighters.

  • Falco- As we know Falco is one of Star Fox's best pilots, if not the best. However, out of the cockpit I see him being a sniper, an assassin who deals precision calculated death from afar. As for vehicle preference, we already know he prefers the fighters.

  • Slippy- Ah, Slippy often subjected being the comic relief of the team. Of course, I see an opportunity for a side of badass to shine. Seeing how Slippy is the team's mechanic and tech expert, why not give him turrets and drones as per the "Engineer" class in many others videogames; and just to be safe make sure he knows his way around high explosives as well. Seeing how he is usually portrayed as clumsy and getting into trouble in the air, he makes up for it by being more proficient with land vehicles and watercraft.

  • Peppy- He is equally good with many vehicles like Fox. However, due to age he is beginning to lose the reaction speed and multitasking capability needed to sufficient operate those vehicles. But his years of experience in combat still serve him well outside of the cockpit. Peppy isn't that good with vehicles but he can still fight quite well on foot where he still outperforms his teammates in infantry training exercises and notably CQC.

[up] Would Andross be The Man Behind the Man, then? Would Star Wolf exist as a merc group or as an official EliteSquadron? (And under Pigma's command instead of Wolf's?) And, if the latter, would Panther and/or Krystal be members of that squadron? And what of Bill?

As for Command's Endings, I group it into 3 timelines: And the Adventure Continues ("Fox and Krystal"), To the Future ("Goodbye Fox" and "Lucy and Krystal" with elements of "Slippy's Resolve" and "Pigma's Revenge"), and Bad Futurenote  ("The Anglar Empire", "Star Wolf Returns", and "The Curse of Pigma"). "Dash Makes a Choice" can fit all endings except for the last part of "Pigma's Revenge", so I have that in common among all timelines.

In my opinion, the counter-intuitive control system had more to do with the unenjoyability of the game than the multiple mission paths, though I will concede that the characterization went into Wangst territory.

So: Would it be better to fully reboot the franchise (again)? To only retain Starfox64 and declare Adventures and after Canon Discontinuity, declare only Command discontinuity, or have Command happen in Broad Strokes and resume with Fox's son Marcus with Dash carrying his grandfather's legacy? And should there be Arc Welding with Nintendo's other space-future series?

Actually, I would want to take the Zelda route with 1 game in the Bad Future and a 1 game at the same point in the "Fox and Krystal" timeline). Cameos would be alright if done well but not necessary.

Andross is among those who suffered loss of friends and family at the hands of the mercs sent by the Cornerian military. Hence, he began organizing the separate insurgent groups on several planets into a rebellion movement against Corneria.

I say Star Wolf is what happened when Wolf decided to takeover Pigma's operations. As for Wolf himself, I would say he is a Blood Knight and is physically the strongest of all the Star Wolf members. Oh and Wolf should probably have been in Fox's crew at one point but he proved to be a loose cannon and even challenged Fox for leadership of the team, hence his expulsion from the team.

Krystal and Sauria should be probably included because won't it be fun to go all Jedi as Krystal?

Last, that General Ripper who hired James? I say he should be brought to justice by none other than the one and only General Pepper (not a general at the point though).

Nothing Star Fox related is ever going to impress me unless they stuck with the arcadeish flight simulator craziness 64 had. Now I really wish Hideki Kamiya really did helm a project. Too bad rabid fans had to leave such a bad taste in his mouth. I'm sure he has a "your mom" bot for his twitter.

Why won't Nintendo just give us a new Starfox game already? They've given us enough of Mario and Pokemon for a while so I'd like to see one their other franchises get a release instead of those two for a couple of years.

You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!

Its tech demo though so the thing itself would not be much to look at especially since it uses Star Fox 64's mugshots.

Eh, I doubt that, its just that haven't actually started developing it so story for it doesn't even exist, though Miyamoto seems confident they can do it in year.
