Has the "in space" part, missing the "recycled" part (the word "but" basically does all the lifting there).

Yeah, this image is just saying "Characters I've never heard of are in space." It's no better than this image of Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space, and possibly worse.

Might have to fall back on a designated "assumed to be recognizable character" image like the one on the Sherlock Holmes In The Twenty Second Century page.

Oh! How about Rocket Robin Hood?

Maybe a two-frame original/recycled comparison? Also, I think it would be cool if the recycled version is not literally in space, e.g. The Magnificent Seven is The Seven Samurai in the Old West.

[up][up] That could work. going with the standard Star Wars example

  • Star Wars — A New Hope is also, by word of George Lucas, The Hidden Fortress IN SPACE!
  • The Trench Run sequence in A New Hope is the climax of The Dam Busters IN SPACE!
  • The pod-racing scene in The Phantom Menace is Ben Hur A LONG TIME AGO IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY! Oh, and ON A DESERT PLANET!

Looking for more "We can safely assume everybody recognizes the antecedent" possibilities from the examples:

Oh I know. Just to really drive the point home, a 3 panel comparison of how The Seven Samurai inspired The Magnificent Seven, which in turn both movies inspired Samurai Seven. It's The Seven Samurai with Humongous Mecha in a Steampunk Edo period style world. I don't think you can get any more recycled than that.

There are a few dozen unofficial remakes of Seven Samurai (did you know A Bug's Life is exactly the same plot? it's done pretty well tho :), but The Magnificent Seven is official and almost shot-for-shot. If that example is used, would want to end there. (Although unless the MS image specifically says something about being a SS remake, that would be Just Two Movie Posters And A Caption.)

Also, reiterate: the best image would probably not be literally "in space". The trope description even explicitly says it's not meant to be literal, presumably because there was a lot of misuse along those lines, which such an image would perpetuate.

I do like Rocket Robin Hood, although that is a totally different direction.

IMO, the ideal image would have some other goofily high-concept premise. "IN SPACE", while not the only possibility, is an immediately evocative one. It's difficult to think of any non-SF property that doesn't sound goofy if you add "IN SPACE" after it as a new non-ironic title.

Looking at the examples, frankly, the misuse seems to be going in the other direction. Instead of too many examples that literally take place in space but don't fit the trope, there seem to be an awful lot of "This movie somewhat resembles this other movie... but in Florida instead of California!" non-examples.

BTW, taking works and just adding new characters wouldn't be this trope.

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

[up]Are there examples of that here? I agree (I think), but I'm unclear as to the specific relevance to this thread.

This is very hastily thrown together, but would something like this work?

Edit: enh, dunno, a single image or two-frame sequence might make it clearer that B is A Recycled In Space, not sure how to communicate that on a larger scale.

My inclination is still to just go with a single "Objectively Ridiculous High Concept Reimagining" image.

I like Limozeen; it saying "but now it's in face" makes it feel recycled, and they're obviously in space.

It may seem like a petty distinction, but it doesn't say "...but NOW they're in space!" And having no idea who these guys are, I'm thinking "Well, why wouldn't they be in space, exactly?"

I do have a fondness for Limozeen... BUT THEY'RE IN SPACE, but a straight example might make a better illustration than a parody example about a fictional rock band.

So far, I think a comparison between Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven sounds like the best idea, if good images can be found.

Some ideas I just came up with out of the blue, for the lulz of it, if it's not too late too suggest anything.

They even got In Space in the title!

F.Y.I. This franchise was recycled 4 times more since this image was made.

The complete franchise in all it's recycled glory...for now.
