Mind if I drop this here? I just need to get this out of my system as soon as possible. Don't expect anything good in there though!

No, really, don't.

Mike: Some friendly advice from me to you. Don't put clangy noises in just one channel. Ever.

Rock and roll song.

Xtense, you exceed my expectations. I've only listened to the first song, but it's catchy. Feels like a dance version of something in Chrono Trigger.

[up][up] What about if you balance them with white noise or similar sonic weirdness in the other speaker?

Of course, then you turn into The Dead C...

@Longfellow - Thanks :) . Its a shame my host seems to be down, I'd recommend something more, seeing as you're a songwriter. Off the top of my head, Empty Room might suit your tastes more, as it has lyrics (sung by my sister, written by me and my sis again, recorded on a 3$ mic ;) ).

I liked your rock'n'roll ditty too, simple and to the point :) .

What about if you balance them with white noise or similar sonic weirdness in the other speaker?

The implication was that there wasn't anything in the other channel. In this case there wasn't.

The rest of the song was good, just not the intro.

So I've got a question that touches sampling morality in an odd way.

Right now I have spent about an hour loading random non-sound files into Renoise to see what they produce, my interest spurred by a Renoise forum thread which was in turn inspired by a Boing Boing article (actually I did it before by mistake, but now I got interested).

Out of this hour, 3/4s were dedicated to playing around with what I got when I've loaded up scph10000.bin, which is a PS2 BIOS file  *

. It is fascinating. Why? Because aside from the broken modem sounds that aren't unique to this method of sound discovery, I somehow got tastily corrupted sounds from the PS2's intro and menu. Imagine this sound getting mangled by Alva Noto; this is what I've got. Amazing.

Buuuuut I'm pretty sure these sounds are copyrighted. Use or don't use?

If you're paranoid about being sued, don't use, I'd say.

If you're not, USE IT, USE IT USE IT USE IT.

I have a huge collection of Guitar Pro/TuxGuitar files (mostly half-finished or all-finished songs), mostly various kinds of metal. I'm experimenting with other genres, mostly film score- I'm kind of a Nightwish fanboy. Long story short, I'm working on music for the TV Tropes Wiki Villain Song. It sounds like Finntroll right now. I'll post the MIDI when I'm done.

Litis: That depends if the original file can still be extracted from your .xrns file. If you didn't modify it in any way in the sample editor, this constitutes copyright infringement. However, if any changes are made that make an extracted file unusable as a BIOS (preferably even unreconstructable), then this is artistic licence and possibly fair use.

Then, the question of the intro and menu sounds. This one is very difficult, as there are no laws which say when a sound is mangled enough to constitute a new product. By rule of thumb, make sure it is unrecognizable to be fully safe.

This method isn't novel though, I've got tracks from 1995 where a guy used his MS-DOS and shell system files to create a whole composition ;) .

So um.

Long story short, I started a thing, which now has a Troper Covens thread.

I don't need one per se, but I'd like a rapper to accompany our trip-hop group. Since it's sort of a staple of the genre.

@Bound By The Moon: Yeah, I can completely identify with the whole 'having oodles of GP 5/Tuxguitar files' thing. Until I joined a band and got hold of Ableton to start my ambient project and other oddities, I could only write on Guitar Pro and as a consequence have around 9 albums' worth of material (excluding little ideas, bits and pieces), only half of which is being used in my current endeavours and only 1 of which has been recorded in its entirety - although as an Aevum Nova album I can't claim full credit for its composition, given that our other guitarist and our frontman both make weighty contributions to the creative process.

That MIDI track was pretty damn cool, by the way; reminded me a bit of Ensiferum. Really liking the use of harmonic minor tonality in there.

@Spain Sun: Apologies for my tardiness, but I have way too much going on right now to finish recording the RPM album. Will link when it's done.

@As The Annointed, yeah, that sounds like me. I've been writing for a while though, and my style's changed a lot, so Old Shame is starting to kick in for some of them (even though they're probably not that bad). Glad you liked the demo. grin

Composed this (bare in mind, it's the second thing I've ever composed, not counting the two-note loop I made as BGM for something).

I have tried my hand at composing music, but I've only had a hand in writing two songs and they were both for school assessments.

First, I set the words of a William Blake poem ("The Poison Tree") to music. Made it into a kind of folk-influenced waltz for voice, piano and violin.

As well as that, I helped to write some lyrics for a relative's own composition. The words were originally evocative of a kind of Otis Redding type thing, and I'd even started writing horn arrangements in case they wanted that, but unfortunately they ended up being used in an awful ballad, something that Celine Dion would be really embarrassed to sing.

Oh yeah, Gloomer reminded me that this is the only song I can honestly say I've "composed", as opposed to "recorded random improvisations, then fooled around with looping stuff until I thought I had something that sounded good". Like his, it was done for a class assignment.
