Wait, this thing is actually out of Development Hell ? Really ?
Oh, well, I don't care. There's already a couple of pretty good (and mostly faithful to the source) movies I can fall back on if this one's crap.
Well, there's no actual sources, yet...
As for the films...they're okay, but I generally stick to the manga/anime continuity. So I'd probably continue doing that, anyway.

The movie could be pretty good or it could be shit. I really don't think it'll be amazing, though.
It'll definitely get Americanized, but I don't think it'll really hurt the show that much. I don't think the Japanese setting is integral to the story.
I just hope they have some version of Matsuda. (Is Matsuda his family name or his given name? I can't remember.)

Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember them, you are not alone.Since Matsuda was my favorite character in Death Note and all.
How many asian actors does Hollywood even have anyways? I'm curious to see how the movie would look...or they'd just pull a Dragon Ball on us. They shoulda just done that cowboy bebop show instead. I wanna see Cowboy BeBop at His Computer dammnit.
Speaking of anime to americanized movie...asides from Dragon Ball Evolution and Speed Racer...what else do we even have?
I couldn't think of any. People keep saying The Last Airbender is one, but that's a western animation, so it doesn't count.

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."And they managed to screw that up on too.
There more upcoming adaptations, though I am not sure when they will be coming out or are they in development hell. Most promising is Akira and Ghost in the Shell, though I have a feeling there a large possibility of adaptation decay, more so than Death Note.
Here's the link: http://my.opera.com/cgman/blog/2009/06/28/death-note-from-japan-to-united-states
Turns out, the poster is not real, it's just an interpentation. However, the article says they're changing Light Yagami to Light Reynolds and Misa Amane to Misa Parker.
Still, hopefully they would throw Rayne and Naomi out of the window.
Wait, if it's going to be Americanized, who will Rayne work for? SIS?
Oh boy, the website went out on me again.
Why can't he just work for the FBI? There's no real reason he has to be a foreigner.
Currently taking a break from the site. See my user page for more information.Well the whole point was that L send an overbroad agency to probe the NPA for Kira...the CIA then?
Hmmm...that article is pretty old, and it doesn't look like it's out of development hell, yet, looking at its IMDB page. Pretty much nothing about it is viewable. It would be nice to see a director, at least.
I also hope to see Matsuda. And his name:
Hmm...Toby Matson?
Stupid Matson.
I was thinking Patterson. Sounds kinda like Matsuda.
...Right?
Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember them, you are not alone. Both would work. :D
Wataru Samuel Jackson = yes. There is my movie ticket.

This is a dumb question but...who's Samuel Jackson again??
Samuel L Jackson. Played Mace Windu and that guy in Snakes On A Plane.
Currently taking a break from the site. See my user page for more information.Ohh...
Wait, he's African-American, right? If he is cast as Watari, won't people see it as a Race Lift or an effort for the executives to balance...things?
Maybe. But, to be be fair, a lot of the characters are actually Japanese and there aren't a lot of black characters in anime, anyway. Plus he's in the right age range to play Watari/Wammy.
Pretty sure they'd all be Race Lifted anyways if they were going to Americanize it. It wouldn't be terribly difficult to set in the USA.
Ohhh, suuuuuuuuuure. Another anime gets a shoddy live action film that'll flop when it hits theaters while the cash cow movie for Halo laments in Development Hell.
COMMON HOLLYWOOD. HALO WOULD PROBABLY OUT GROSS LOTR OR HARRY POTTER.
/rage
My other signature is a Gundam.Actually, there's been no news on this one since the middle of 2009...
If this ever happens, it's a great opportunity for improvement in the right hands.
The movie being more compact could potentially mean less focus on plotting, and more focus on characterization and the underlying ethical themes. Plus, being of significantly less length would require far fewer twists and turns which helps plausibility and the maintenance of tension immensely.
Don't get me wrong, Death Note is really enjoyable and fairly impressive for its rather epic cat and mouse story, but it didn't quite pull it off and suffered some as a result. Plus, it's just not practical in a movie. Since there's less potential of an adaptation measuring up in that regard, I think it's reasonable that the focus should shift.
Unfortunately, I highly doubt anyone capable of an adaptation of Death Note that puts it closer to its Crime and Punishment roots is or will be involved with the project.
I can't see it being better than the manga/anime, really.
I don't think Light was particularly complex, just that his style set the tone for the story.
You could rename him, relocate him, change his motivations, I don't care. He just needs to be someone who would do something like what Light did, and provoke someone who would do something like what L did. That is in fact the premise of the the story.
