I thought that the residents were constantly thought of as hypocritical, unobservant, almost oblivious bystanders. They seem to always side with Spongebob over Squidward, but there are plenty of episodes where they don't really like Spongebob either.
Squidward is just Bikini Bottom's butt monkey, so I think he just naturally gets it worse off.
As for the Graveyard Shift being scary, all I have to say is...Nosferatuu..
"The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy."I do find it interesting that the prospective employee apparently had red lights in his nostrils.
@102 Yeah the residents aren't any better, which is why Bikini Bottom became a Crapsack World in later seasons. Squidward or any citizen usually gets this too.
I though Graveyard Shift was scary and funny because of Spongebob acting over-dramatic.
I know, that I'm in the minority, but I thought Squidward deserved all the bad stuff that happened in the episode Little Yellow Book. While reading Sponge Bob's diary is bad enough, Squidward actually has the balls to not feel any remorse for making Sponge Bob cry. He actually laughs at him. Remember those episodes like in Fools in April where he did feel sorry for what he did to Sponge Bob and apologized to him. Squidward does no such thing in this episode. I even think that Squidward got worse along with the other characters over the show's run. So, I feel no pity for him losing his house or ego.
It helps he just laughs through the abuse claiming it was Worth It, which only infuriated them more.
But yeah, the problem came from almost every other citizen in Bikini Bottom being blatantly hypocritical about it, with only Patrick being a lampshaded example.

@ Austin DR. That's what I said, except for the part when his house got taken away
Eh, at least the repo man was about the one guy not looking through the diary with Squidward before.

That's actually true, but Squidward did not deserve to get his house taken away tho. Although I like Squidward, the creators did make him a lot worse when it came to his jerkassery, but at the same time, I think that Squidward is like that because Spongebob pesters him more.
I changed my mind, the darkest Spongebob episode is Squid's visit.
The episode takes Spongebob's fixation with Squidward Up To Eleven . It eventually causes Squidward to have a, unfunny and kinda disturbing, mental breakdown.
And it's all played for laughs.

@PSI What bothered me was the behavior of Patrick, the police, and the citizens...to me, I think Squidward deserved everything he got (except getting his house revoked) since he was a jerkass who didn't apologize for his actions. The citizens and Patrick were huge hypocrites for laughing with Squidward and then turning against him.
