In my original work Taroku "Blade" Toyaka is the hero's rival and cousin. I want to have him initially come off as a rick snarky rude jerk but eventually turns out to be a decent guy (something of a Jerkass Woobie)

When his back-story is given he's revealed to be a wild child who snuck out, drunk and partied and had a few one night stands with older girls.

But he's played as an Ethical Slut who seems to be looking for affection in all the wrong places. He grew up in a dysfunctional home with a fanatical perfectionist mother (A fundie of the Catholic variety) who constantly pressured him to be better than his genius cousin (who was the favorite of the family) and an Alcoholic father that didn't approve of anything he did.

He was raised in a secretive and manipulative family to be nothing more the a pawn. In his family 'betrayal to blood' (revealing any of the family's dirty deeds and abuse) is treated like an unforgivable sin. Not to mention when his slide into partying starts he's just lost his best friend and been blamed by a girl who he loved and thought was his friend. He deals with the grief in the only way he knows how, by repressing it.

Also if it helps, he has limits and lines he does not cross. He is slightly chivalrous and finds the idea of forcing himself on someone to be disgusting. He would sooner let himself be used and discarded by someone after his money then falsely lead a girl on or force her to do something she wasn't ready for/didn't want to.

I want to pull off his character so that any logical person would not view him as a perverted rapist. Also I've seen people view 'Wild Child types in a less than sympathetic manner.

Does he sound likable?

That's a completely likeable character, IMO.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

How does party boy/promiscuity —> rapist? I think he's fine.

Also, maybe it's just my out-of-context interpretation but you seem to be taking an unnecessarily negative view of "partying". It'd probably be good to show that he's doing stuff that actually is hurting himself, if you want to portray it as a negative thing.

I dunno but I've seen some fans twist anyone into a horrible person. It seems like boy who sleeps with girls —> sexist rapist who only cares about conquests.

I don't think you should worry about those people, then.

Eh I suppose.

A question what exactly makes people view some 'party teen' types with such dislike?

Jealousy, self-righteousness, bad experiences with someone of that type, bad feminism, bad anti-elitism, etc.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

Ah I understand. Blade sometimes acts the part of the cocky rich boy because that's what he's 'supposed to be' but he honestly doesn't think he's a very good person.

I think it's a great character. No doubt there will be some people out there who dislike it, but it's impossible to write something everyone likes.

Good point. So long as most people don't mind or like him, you're fine.

^^ I know I can't please everyone but I just worry that he wouldn't come off as I intended.
