copy pasting from someone on /v/ (of all places)

"Now we have Lara Croft who before was basically her own girl that went out and shot T-Rexs with pistols matrix style but instead we now get Moe-Croft who's defining plot point is attempted rape. Because female characters aren't ever able to develop outside of a situation involving their gender. And what real life girl doesn't want to role play a rape scene when they can easily get the real thing in your average college dorm?"

Tell that to Heavy Rain, then......

[up] Why do you even bother doing anything with Any of those Imageboards.

They are horrible places for opinions and facts.

Look at /a/'s reaction to Toonami bringing in more anime fans.

Aside from that, I don't see any problem with this new Tomb Raider.

What does that have to do with anything? That scene was just awkward.

Because I share their cynicism for many things, I don't fall for the hype of most things. I like being negative and we got the no negativity rule here sooo...

Also its fun to have quick topics to talk about that you wont find here.

[up][up]If Heavy Rain has attempted rape in it that's as tasteless as this, then it's trash too. As far as I'm concerned.

[up]Basically, Demongod is saying that Imageboards are full of shit. Which, while true, they still bring up good points from time to time.

This is one of those times.

This is why i Find the immense cyncicism of the gaming community to be overplayed and a massive overreaction.

[up][up] Cynicism never helps anything, Realism is the better way to go.

Cynicism is good, it means we aren't going to put up with mindless drivel that we can be manipulated into buying.

And I am being realistic. There are good games I"m looking forward to.

I dunno, now I'm starting to think of Gordon Freeman.

Okay, I can explain: throughout the series, Gordon has had a terminal case of landing into progressively worse situations: Assist in conducting an experiment? Unwittingly unleash an Alien Invasion. Try to stop invasion? Make it worsen while you're in stasis and unwittingly lead an intergalactic empire to Earth. Try to stop the empire? Good going, you've caused them to open a proto-portal to Earth. Try to close it before it fully opens up? You succeed, but your longtime friend and ally gets killed off.

Who knows, maybe that's what they're going for with this reboot and Lara, even if the analogy doesn't make perfect sense and even if it seems kinda...skeevy.

The difference Gordon Freeman wasn't almost raped through it and wasn't turn into almost a human version of Wile E Coyote in terms of suffering.

Nathan Drake (Oh look Uncharted, how much of a coincidence?!) goes through progressively worse shit in 2 but it never feels like the developers are purposely doing it see how much shit they can put him through.

[up][up][up] Except Cynicism makes people tend to act uptight and whiny.

Look at what happened to Marioguy and his temp ban during the Nintendo 3 DS E3 conference.

[up] Considering what head crabs are shown to do, it's pretty close to rape.

And Micahel beckett in Fear 2 was raped, and I see no one complaining about it.

You just need to replace the aliens with rape.

Considering what head crabs are shown to do, it's pretty close to rape.

Come on.

#190: Jun 11th 2012 at 6:24:18 PM

When I first heard of it I liked the new characterization (Action Survivor is probably my favorite archetype). I've never been a fan of the series, but after seeing the first trailer I thought "wow, that's a game I'd be tempted to buy". However, they seem to be taking this past Action Survivor into full-on "Break the Cutie while she screams and whimpers like a helpless little victim and gets abused in every imaginable way". Even if that makes sense as a backstory for a character like Lara, it isn't fun and I wouldn't enjoy playing it.

Right.

A gritty realistic reboot may have been what the series needed.

But now it just feels like full on torture porn, hell the developers in that interview even basically come off saying "Laura is gonna be a weak little girl and its up to YOU to save her!"

@Anfauglith: Hey, I said that the analogy may not have made perfect sense (and there's the fact that Gordon has no voice or established personality).

Then again, with what I said in mind, Half Life sounds more like an attempt to defy the standard "white male power fantasy" whereas with Tomb Raider...well, yeah.

It's a classic exploitation plot. Where you stand on the issue is probably judged by where you stand on exploitation narratives and so-called "torture porn".

They're not necessarily bad things. Hell, good exploitation films have been both important and enjoyable entries in cinematic canon. I see no reason why games can't do that, nor why sexual assault should be taboo in games. I mean, a lot of games treat it badly, but it doesn't mean all do or will.

That article was terrible and creepy. It just wanted to sensationalize assault. Bleh.

But now it just feels like full on torture porn, hell the developers in that interview even basically come off saying "Laura is gonna be a weak little girl and its up to YOU to save her!"

A lot of that is spin by the article writer. Yeah, there are some quotes, but I'd have to see the entire original interview before I would want to judge.

I think it's too soon to judge.

Tell that to Heavy Rain, then.....

In all fairness, that's not much of a defense at all.

Heavy Rain is badly written and Madison's multiple "assaulted by creepers"/"mostly naked for no real reson" scenes(along with her entire character) end up being completely needless in the grand scheme of things.

I just want to say I am just as angry and agree with everything said by the creator of that "Featured" Kotaku article comment thread.

This game has skeeved me out ever since that "groaning" gameplay trailer and it looks like it's getting worse. Whoever called it "Demonophobia with a budget" was spot on.

I am NOT comfortable with this game.

I get that Lara wasn't born a badass. But the way they're going about turning her into a badass is just...NO. Just...NO. What the hell are they thinking throwing in rape into her backstory?! I do not trust these people to handle a horrible, impossibly sensitive subject like that with any kind of understanding and finesse.

I played Tomb Raider because Lara was a tough, no-nonsense, kickass lady who was a badass and never apologized for it and never went about exploiting herself in order to get anywhere. She didn't have to show some leg to get what she needed, even though that was clearly an option. She got what she wanted through her brains, athletic abilities, and a rocket launcher. But this game...this whole "let's tear her to shreds, have some attempted rape, have her moaning and groaning in pain in a sexy manner" thing...this both offends me and frightens me. This is sick.
