Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.

Looks like we have a big page lock coming. Big in the sense of many pages and big in the sense that the pages to be locked are too big.

It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine

They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.

I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Characters.Etrian Odyssey gave me the "page is too long" warning when I edited it just now - not that surprising since it's got five games' worth of characters crammed into it (or seven if you count the remakes)

Split by individual entries?

I edited it to remove sinkholes, excessive bold mark-up, and complete zero-context examples. It isn't showing the banner anymore, but you can split it if you want. I think the bigger issue would be getting rid of redundant entries like the Weapon Of Choice or Sean Connery Is About to Shoot You entries that are in nearly every character folder. If a trope is that common among the characters, you only really need one entry that explains that most characters demonstrate this trope

It has been ages since the Harry Potter Main page has been locked, and I'd gladly volunteer to split it if only it were possible……

Administrivia.Wick Namespace Migration is sending out the warning just now.

There are a bit less than... around 5980 Main redirects I haven't checked.

I'm not familiar enough with that effort to really do this myself, but I think the page needs to be cleaned of pages that have been completed (or those that just have, like, 10 wicks to deal with). Obviously, unfinished pages need to be finished.

I remember participating in the Classical Mythology wick clean-up, so I'll finish that one and take it off the list.

Godzilla Threshold is complaining about size.

(My latest edit reduced its size by one character, but I think more needs to be done.)

[up] We can probably split off some large folders into their own pages.

One of Warhammer 40k's trope pages is just about to be overly long. I don't recommend splitting it, because it looks like the page is mostly made up of Character Tropes that belong on the many, many Warhammer 40k character sheets.

I'll clean it up more over the following week, but if there's anyone else familiar with 40k I'd appreciate some help.

[up] In the case of the 40K trope pages, any singular faction/character tropes that are already on their respective pages can be culled outright, Honestly, what I'd like to see happen is for the actual trope pages to be about the game itself and the most overarching of its tropes, with everything else going to the character/faction pages. Also, there really needs to be a massive effort to update entries that include the game's crunch to reflect the 8th edition index/codex rules.

I got a size warning in the Tough Act to Follow last night (I had posted this in an ATT query at first because I was unaware of this thread).

I think UsefulNotes.Media Classifications is long enough to be separated into folders.

What should be done with Sandbox.Pokemon Headscratchers 2? Per here the material was moved to a sandbox when it was removed without being relocated anywhere, and it's been there for 2 years.

So, the limit is 500,000 characters, as displayed in the edit form?

What does "html formatted" mean in the banner on top of this thread?

It’s how the edits are rendered, so the curly braces are 4 characters as typed but the number of html characters to get them to act and display as intended is more - same with all formatting edits.

Couldn't you just check how many characters a page has by copying from "view source", then?

No, that just shows the source text, not the html

So, what's the character count for a blank page?

And every wick costs at least 128 characters...

A page would fit 50,000 html characters after about 350-360 wicks with no other text...

So, if the limit is still 500,000 html characters, a page can hold around 3500 wicks, at most?

...

EDIT: Note to Self: An empty page is around 60K characters already?

And a folder is 176 characters, with an empty title.

The ad on every page, is 200 characters.

foldercontrol is about 100.

How does the edit page detect too-long-ness?

Since the source html has technically been opened, I guess it just counts the characters in the background.

[up] - I dunno, really. Maybe call it Archives 3? Or move the questions into the pages for their specific topics?

but there may be some duplicates between the active one (Headscratchers.Pokemon) and the Sandbox.Pokemon Headscratchers 2, given the occurrence of this in both:

As for the Sneasel with Ice Punch, that's actually pretty danged unlikely. Only the Buneary Line or a Delibird can pass that on to Sneasel, and they only learn it through breeding themselves. So to get a Sneasel with Ice Punch, a wild Medicham or Hitmonchan or something

Although, the Sandbox.Pokemon Headscratchers 2 continues with:

has to breed with a Buneary, and then the offspring has to travel from around Eterna Forest, all the way to Snowpoint, and breed with a Sneasel. In the wild. Yeeeeeah.

But, that might be the only duplicate...

Why can't you determine how long a page is from right-click>"view source"?

[up] - Oh! That question! ... I assume that you could count it like that, copy-paste view-source into a character counter.

Microsoft Word has such a counter, and there's many online ones.

I'd want to know the count for a blank page and links and stuff, so we have a way of estimation, without doing the view-source.

Although, just counting the source is the faster option.
