No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...

I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?

Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

[up]To be fair that was in oldcrons as well, showing they have feeling but it was more a throwaway manner so player can have something, eventualy it become the rule with the newcrons

My first army was Sisters, with Guard allies before I went full Guard. Still have a soft spot for the Sororitas.

I like the idea that the Necrons are still trying to slaughter all life in the galaxy to satiate their C'tan masters... only for them to slaughter each other over how it should be done as much as much as they slaughter the living.

There are some interesting rumours about the campaigns that will accompany the release of the next edition of 40K (nothing on any rules changes yet though). It is still early so this may not be accurate but here are some highlights:

Rather than doing the two army starter sets they will be doing a starter set containing a single army for each force engaged in a campaign. The first campaign will be War in the Webway and will involve Khorne, Tzeentch, Slaanesh, Dark Elves, Ulthwé, Iyanden and Harlequins. The starter sets will be all plastic and include new models for some current special characters (Khârn, Eldrad, Prince Yriel), new models for old special characters who never had models before (Iyanna Arienal & the Keeper of Secrets N'kari), some new special characters (Vect's second in command, a Solitaire, a psychic Wraithknight) and Daemon Primarch Magnus. There will also be new plastic Eldar Guardians, Chaos Sorcerers, Rubric Marines & Terminators, Khorne Berzerkers, Dark Eldar Trueborn, Incubi, Guardian of the Black Library (Harlequin Wraithlord).

Future campaigns will involve other forces and have their own starter sets.

First I'm hearing of that.

The only solid 40K rumors I've seen are plastic Eldrad (I think there's a pic of the sprue floating around, so that might not be a rumor anymore), plastic Kharn and some Deathwatch material (maybe Codex and maybe kits).

[up]I was surprised at the detail considering it is more than a year until all this is meant to happen so it should be taken with a pinch of salt.

This has been a great weekend 40K-wise. There's a FLGS an hour or so from my house that's in the process of clearing out their GW merch, so I got a mouldline tool, drop pod, Razorback, Commander, and an old box of Necron Warriors for $100. Today, as a birthday present, my wife got me a Badger Patriot 105 airbrush, connection hose, and spray-out cup.

GW Annual Report

Highlights include: Revenue down a little but profits and royalties up a little, Age of Sigmar selling more than WFB had in years.

How is that disappointing?

Because I am, to put it politely, not a fan of AOS, and I think it's natural to be disappointed when substandard products do well.

Ah, right.

'Sub-standard' is subjective though, right? I like the Sigmarine models myself, as they're great conversion fodder for my Marines. The Sylvaneth are pretty cool too.

My distaste for AOS is more directed at the rules than the models (I'm not a fan of the Sigmarine aesthetic, but the new Orcs are solid-looking 'Ard Boyz conversion fodder). They've made some improvements on the mechanical front, to be fair, with the addition of a points system, but it's still fundamentally predicated on a core ruleset where troops are assumed to be fixed in one constant pose for the entire battle, horses are just as swift running backwards as forwards, and being engaged in mortal combat with a screaming berserker does not impair your ability to accurately shoot a bow and arrow.

For today's 2nd Edition Thursday: Khârn the Betrayer

During 2nd Edition Khârn could be chosen as part of a Chaos army but couldn't be its general unless the army was worth less than 1'000 points and consisted of nothing but Khorne Berzerkers and daemons. Khârn was worth 217 points and his stats were: M4 WS9 BS7 S6 T5 W3 I7 A3 Ld10

Khârn was equipped with a Mk.1 Plasma Pistolnote , a bolt pistol, Frag & Krak Grenades. He wore power armour and had the Mark of Khorne (giving him a +1 to his armour save - for a 2+ total save - and made him frenzied - doubling his attacks but forcing him to charge the closest enemy possible).

Khârn had one Wargear Card and two Chaos Rewards that were:

Praise of Khorne: Khârn could re-roll any failed armour saving rolls for his Khorne Marked Power Armour.

Blood Fury of Khorne: Khârn is a bestial engine of destruction in combat - even the most savage wounds will not stop him as he storms forward bellowing his battlecry. Blood Fury of Khorne doubles Khârn's Wounds characteristic to 6 but blinds him so much that he could attack anyone nearby in his berserk fury. If Khârn kills his opponent in close combat and there are no models within his follow-up move of 4" then he will attack the nearest friendly model instead and they will fight a round of combat as if Khârn was an enemy model. If this model is also slain then Khârn will attack the next closest model (friend or foe) within 4". This continues until Khârn fails to kill a model or runs out of models within 4"

Gorechild: Gorechild is a deadly weapon capable of splitting an armoured Space Marine from head to crotch with one blow and is doubly dangerous in the hands of Khârn. Gorechild had Strength 7, did 1 Damage, had a -4 Save Modifier and penetrated vehicle armour with D6+D12+7. Khârn is so familiar with Gorechild that in hand-to-hand combat he may re-roll ay fumbles (1’s) on his attack dice.

Khârn had the following special rules: Rapid Fire: Fire Bolt Weapons twice if he didn't move.

Immunity to Psychology: Except for Frenzy, Khârn was unaffected by any psychological effects such as fear or terror.

Furious Charge: In 2nd Edition this rule allowed Khârn to tripe his movement distance when he charged an enemy rather than double as would normally be the case.

Unstoppable Attack: Khârn hit so hard that enemy models could not use the Parry special rule to force him to re-roll attacks.

Impetuous: Khârn had a follow-up move of 4" rather than the normal 2"

So, a hard-to-kill close combat monster? Do want.

Even in second edition, Khârn was already a hell of a guy.

[up]Yep. I did mistype his Attacks stats (he only has 3 base Attacks but with frenzy doubling and having a pistol and close combat weapon he has 7 total) but he was still a monster in combat, even if you had to send him off on his own to stop him slaughtering your own men.

So, I'm writing a fanfic that's a Fusion Fic between 40K and a few other sci-fi settings. There's going to be one part that's a joint-operation between Custodes and Astartes (namely, defending Terra from an attack). I'm wondering-do you guys have any idea how the two might interact? I'm tempted to invoke The Knights Who Go Squee with the Astartes (since Custodes are even more badass than Astartes).

One thing of further note about their annual report: their core revenue (selling models) is still down. The reason GW was profitable was because their revenues from licensing did better than expected - namely from Total War: Warhammer. Yeah, that tie-in for the setting they blew up for Age of Sigmar.

Good job, guys.
