No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...

I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?

Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

[up]As much as the show is a parody it does bring up a point.

Had the Emperor managed to speak again and go about how "I AM NOT A FUCKING GOD YOU IDIOTS, YOU GOT IT WRONG". The Imperium will be split between those who still trust him, and those who will claim a Daemon possessed him or something like that.

I wrote GW to ask about the Strike Force Ultra formation. It requires a captain in terminator armor, but on the website that particular model's been discontinued even though it's in the formation's picture in the new codex, and the only ones I can find on eBay are old metal minis.

[up]Games Workshop has been putting unavailable models in their codices for this Edition for some reason, the most obvious being the converted Wolf Priest in Terminator armour from the Space Wolf book. There is a rumour that a plastic Terminator Captain will be released at some point but for the moment conversion is the only way to go.

That change happened a while back. Originally, they had no limits on models included in the book, but that led to a massive backlog of unfinished armies, so they restricted codexes and army books to only stuff they either had available or could make by the time of release. Then, a few years ago, they concluded that they had enough miniature design staff that they didn't have to do that any more, and started to include a few units they hadn't made yet.

Yeah, did pre-Terminator Lysander ever actually get a model to go with his profile in the 3E codex?

[up][up]I thought they stopped putting model-less units in codexes after last year's copyright fiasco, turning my converted Wazdakka into a paperweight in the process?

[up] I managed to miss that, possibly because I started running out of care for GW's decisions around Warhammer Visions issue 1.

Terminator libbies are also out of production, so Grey Knights are basically up Shit Creek unless they convert a Libby hood onto Grey Knight termie armor.

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.

Termie librarians out of production? Did GW ditch Finecast or something? I remember buying mine there (and having to uncrook the librarian staff, as well as finding a bubble in a weapon I thankfully didn't plan to use)

[down]Oh. Didn't know/remember that. I may read the article after business hours

Finecast went the way of the dodo some time ago.

GW wrote me back at some point yesterday evening and (as I recall; I don't have it in front of me) said that that model had been produced specifically for the Strike Force Ultra box set, and went out of production when the box set did. However, they said it wasn't out of the question that it could come back in plastic, but they couldn't reveal it.

They also said they'd pass on to their production staff an idea I suggested for a painting tutorial regarding how to properly thin Citadel paints. When I was first starting out, I hated trying to work with the few Citadel paints I had because they always turned out too runny...that was part of the reason I went to using Vallejo. I didn't know that the "one drop of water/thinner/whatever to one drop of paint" method doesn't work with Citadel paints...you basically dip the tip of the brush in the medium and mix it into the paint then start working.

I finished my Rhino yesterday evening and did some weathering on my drop pod...just need to find time to varnish them. Unfortunately, it's so humid here that I'm afraid that trying to spray varnish them even in our garage is asking for a ruined finish, so I'm going to have to do it inside and hope my wife doesn't freak out.

Actually, there are a couple of options for plastic Terminator Librarians.

EDIT: Also, GK terminator armour already has a pseudo-psychic hood built onto the armour to represent the Aegis. It's more compact than a regular psychic hood though. If anything, I'm more likely to use Grey night Terminators as regular Terminator Librarians.

I don't think I've ever thinned Citadel paints.

Probably one reason why my models always come out looking like crap.

I rarely thin my paints personally. Those few times that I have were either when I was trying to extend the life of paints that had begun to dry out (I must stop keeping them next to the radiator) and gone a bit too far, or when I wanted a light wash so I put the water on my brush first, then the wash/shade.

I watched a painting tutorial from Striking Scorpion 82 where he did an Imperial Fists tac Marine and wasn't thinning his Citadel paints, but he wasn't putting much on the brush at a time. In all the GW painting tutorials I've seen on You Tube, from what I can tell the guy basically is dipping the tip of the brush(es) in the water cup and then adding that much to the paint to smooth it out on the palette.

I have painted Lysander without thinning my paints but I tend to do a base coat then successive drybrush layers until it looks right.

I thin white and yellow when I use them, but otherwise it's just careful application straight from the pot and making sure the paint spreads evenly (Citadel's whites and yellows tend to be slightly lighter in pigment, or at least the ones I have from back in the day do).

Sorry to drop in and advertise, but over on the TV Tropes Synctube Coven, we're going to be watching the fan film Damnatus (in German, with English subs) so feel free to come along if you want to join in the fun (and tell your friends).

A pre-show (featuring a fanmade introduction to WH40K lore) begins at about 19:15 EDT (or about 4 hours from the timestamp on this post, for non-American timezone denizens like myself) and the movie itself will begin at about 19:35 to 19:40 EDT depending on how things go.

Our Synctube room is here and can also be found in the Troper Covens thread linked above. Feel free to post in the thread and mention if you'd like to be sent a PM when the preshow starts.

For anyone that cares, GOG.com has three different Warhammer games available now: Chaos Gate, Final Liberation, and Shadow of the Horned Rat.

Speaking of 40k games, has anyone tried the Panzer General 40k game, and is it any good?

Well GOG actually fiddles with the games to make them run on modern computers, so you're good there.
