No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...

I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?

Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

A pretty odd little question;

In a story of mine that features metatextual themes, the Big Bad is Caine, who believes himself to be "an incarnation of" numerous fictional villains, in the way of Daydream Believer crossed with Solipsism.

One of these villains is heavily implied to be Horus.

So basically what I'm asking is for Shout Outs, namely, designed to hint toward Caine's perception of himself, and to baffle his underlings along the lines of Antonius blinked and tried to make heads or tails of what the Scion just said, while Reiji piped up cheerfully, "I read that book!"

[up] Note that it's still one god getting dogpiled by the other three. It's obvious that the third god of the trio plays mediator between the two opposed ones, facilitated with the fact that it's in their mutual long-term interest to take down the fourth god a few notches and level up the playing field again, then it's back to business as usual again.

True but I feel that is still more intense rivalry rather than Arch-Enemy. As I said before though, as with everything in the fluff, this is very much Depending on the Writer, and on a practical level can you really see Tzeentch of all people not allying with Nurgle as part of some nefarious plot?

Only with Nurgle? Nope. Not at all. Though it's notable that the fluff itself says that most of the four-way Chaos God alliances are brokered by Tzeentch, which makes perfect sense. His penchant for scheming, manipulation and general intellectual stuff means he's the most likely to look at the bigger picture, even moreso than the infinitely patient Nurgle who is less about intricate planning and more about playing the waiting game (while eating away at his enemies' resolve/endurance with both physical and non-physical corruption and decay).

One problem with all this is the fact that there's not really any canon in the same way that Star Wars has canon.

That's an exaggeration. For all the fluidity of the finer details of the WH40K setting, plot and characters, there are several constants that have barely if at all seen any significant changes over the franchise's history. One of those constants, in particular, is that (AFAIK, at least) nobody has ever written two opposed Chaos Gods teaming up without at least a third Chaos God being involved.

Well it is going back bit but the 2nd Edition Codex Chaos had the following: "Of all his brother-gods Khorne despises Slaanesh most of all, for the self-indulgent sensualities of the Prince of Chaos are an affront to Khorne. Even so, Khorne may join forces with Slaanesh when necessary, much as it may gall him to do so." There are no mention of the other gods at all and this was an Edition where there was the Daemonic Animosity special rule that affected the daemons of rival gods had to test for when they came within 12" of each other with 1 of the 3 results being that the two units destroy each other..

A lot of this just bring to mind the idea of what one might do with the franchise if given leave to simply reboot the whole thing.

Given that said salty Primarch has:

  • The biggest number of Astartes Chapters descended from him
  • Ultramar, who probably has the best starting position in the Imperium in terms of Infrastructure and Governance

The only ray of sunshine the High Lord's may see be the fact that among the next two on the 'Biggest Astartes Demographics' is Team 'WE ARE TOTALLY LOYAL, HONEST!' who may be a bit more...apprehensive at who's running around with Roboute these days.

The other one, Team Magic Pain Glove, is assumingly busy with the Fallout from Cadia.

[up]I think the implication that Cypher is running around with Guilliman is hinting that the next Loyalist Primarch returning will be Lion.

.... yeah. High Lords of Terra are more fucked than a hooker on 75% off day.

That or the Inner Circle decide 'Screw its, its LEGION TIME' and invade Ultramar to get Cyphers ass.

[up]Or Guilliman and Cypher go to the Rock and stop that.

This is what I'd hope for in a best-case scenario.

...There is NO ONE in the Imperium that would attempt to kill a Primarch. That would be heresy on-par with trying to destroy the Golden Throne.

BlackSunNocturne Since: Aug, 2013

[up]The Inquisition would, and probably will try to.

Reminder: The Inquisition decided to try and destroy a loyal Astartes chapter because the chapter was going to complain to the High Lords of Terra about an Inquisitor's actions. The Golden Lions only survived because the Black Templars (Grimaldus specifically) were like "These guys are cool. We're gonna help them rebuild." -glares at the Inquisition- "And we're going to do so."

Regardless, even if it did happen, all of the Ultramarines and their successor Chapters would start a new Heresy out of sheer fury.

Only in this case, it wouldn't be a Heresy. It'd be a Retribution.

Only if the assassin gets caught. If they think he's brought down by a Daemon Primarch or something, they won't immediately turn on the High Lords or the Inquisition - although it may take a lot of work and some pretty strong ropes to stop them ripping open the Eye of Terror.
