YMMV / Young Thug

Go To

  • Author Appeal: Besides loving stereotypical rap topic such as money, bitches, drugs, and expensive clothing brands such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton, he also like wearing flamboyant and feminine-looking clothes.
  • Awesome Music: You gotta admit, a lot of his songs are actually pretty damn catchy. Special mention goes to most of his songs produced by London On Da Track, Turbo, and Wheezy (no relation to Lil Wayne).
  • Broken Base: Was initially this to Trap Music and hip-hop in general. He is either a game-changer in hip-hop or a complete joke who's a disgrace to the genre.
    • Gunna: Either he’s an untalented hack who lives in the shadow of Thugger, or a decent addition to the Trap genre.
    • His opinions on Andre 3000 of OutKast. Especially him saying that Andre likes his ass kissed, which many find untrue.
  • Fountain of Memes: Seriously, everything he does or says is a source of memes.
  • Genre Popularizer: To the quote-on-quote mumble rap trend alongside Future.
  • Growing the Beard: He went from just a typical Atlanta-based rapper with a generic, Lil Wayne-inspired delivery to one of the most unique and eccentric rappers in the game around 2014.
  • Memetic Badass: Lots of people have frequent call him a god-like figure in hip-hop who shits on the likes of other lyrical rappers like Tupac Shakur, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and other musicians such as John Lennon and the entire The Beatles.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • I nut on that fish on my sofa... Explanation
    • Thugger > Cole Explanation
    • Aye Fuck Cancer... Explanation
    • The album cover of Jeffery Explanation
    • Anytime he raps or sings completely incomprehensible lyrics, such as in "RiRi" and all of his verses in "Lifestyle".
    • Superstar Explanation
  • No Such Thing as Bad Publicity: Lot of stuff such as his sexual orientation, his questionable fashion choices, and his unorthodox and unconventional rapping style receive nothing but a lot of backlash in the rap community, especially towards "old-heads" who want old-school rappers in the vein of 2Pac and Biggie to return to the mainstream. However, lots of casual listeners and even critic have enjoyed his music.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Barter 6 would have been just been just another Young Thug project have it not been for all the negative press-release drama that the project went to.
  • The Scrappy: Out of all of his artists from his label YSL Records, Gunna is this towards non-casual listeners. Besides biting Thug's style too much, he is mostly mocked for his boring-as-hell and uninteresting delivery and for being too similar to the 100 southern trap-rappers clogging the market, and that's including Quality Control-signee Lil Baby.
  • So Bad, It's Good: A lot of his lyrics are known for being completely nonsensical to the point that it borders on being comedic non-sequiturs.
  • Vindicated by History: While always well-received by critics, Young Thug's popularity with the general public wasn't this to begin with. Initially, Thug was seen as a weirdo with superficial lyrics and completely unintelligible vocals who was everything wrong with modern day rap music. Now, he is seen as a unique and versatile artist who is one of the most important and influential rappers of the 2010s.
