YMMV / Tin Man

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Glitch is DG and Azkadelia's father. They both resemble him and the Queen was much closer to him than they ever show her being with Ahamo. There is a big portrait of him standing at her side, but none of her with Ahamo. Or that Ahamo is DG's father, but Ambrose is Azkedellia's.
    • Due to a remnant of the original story, DG and Cain's relationship is subject to this. It was originally an outright romance but anything too romantic was downplayed in the miniseries. So some view DG as a potential Second Love for Cain once he gets over Adora's death. Others view her as a surrogate daughter for him.
  • Broken Base: Zooey Deschanel as DG. Half the viewers find her the wrong choice for such a role, feeling her acting is far too wooden and disaffected in parts. But there are just as many who enjoy her in the part.
  • Complete Monster:
    • The Witch of the Dark, the real "Wicked Witch", is the being possessing Azkedellia and the one behind all the misfortune in the series. When DG and Azkedellia, young heirs to the throne of Oz, accidentally unearthed the Witch from her seal, the Witch promptly possessed Azkedellia and tried to make her murder her own sister. As the years pass, the Witch turns Azkedellia into a despot who twists the O.Z. into a hellish dystopia where innocents are tortured and murdered every day. Unsatisfied with what she's done to the O.Z., the Witch plans to force a permanent eclipse over the O.Z., leading to The Night That Never Ends and the subsequent death of all life within the O.Z.
    • Zero is the cruel henchman to Azkedellia who lacks his master's redeeming qualities. Zero is responsible for the Dark and Troubled Past of "Tin Man" Wyatt Cain; Zero tortured Cain's wife and son, then murdered his wife and slammed Cain into an immobile metal suit, Forced to Watch a recording of his family's torture played on loop for 8 years straight. When Cain confronts Zero, the latter gloats about what he did and shoots Cain in the heart.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The failed pilot episode Lost in Oz used some of the same ideas, particularly the villain being possessed by the original Wicked Witch.
    • The real world house for DG is later used in Once Upon a Time as the Storybrooke home for the Wicked Witch of the West. And Anna Galvin - who plays Lavender Eyes - would later appear as Cruella's mother in the series.
    • The relationship between DG and Cain started out romantic and then became an Intergenerational Friendship. When Snow White & the Huntsman came along, it was the opposite. The Huntsman was scripted to be a father figure to Snow White, before getting Promoted to Love Interest.
    • The film is also a loose adaptation of a fairy tale from Victorian times that makes the heroine and the villainess sisters, where the latter turns out to not be evil, and is saved by The Power of Love (specifically familial love). Frozen (2013) would follow many of the same beats. And Tin Man has one sequence taking place inside a castle in an ice realm.
  • Ho Yay: Look, it's got Alan Cumming in it. And Glitch and Cain talk about dancing and Glitch tells Cain he makes him feel like girls at balls used to, and Cain makes him remember who he is by calling him "Sweetheart."
  • Narm:
    • DG when Hank and Emily reveal that they are robots programmed to raise DG in the real world:
DG: My life is a lie!
    • Everyone calls her DG. Everyone, all the time. Even her mother, in extreme times of crisis, only refers to her by initials. Because the incredibly obvious not-so-clever reference her name is would be ruined if they actually gave her a name. So in one of the film's climactic scenes the queen can only say "Deeeeegeeeee!"
  • Narm Charm:
    • "You guys are out of your tiny minds" is silly but still also quite funny.
    • Azkadellia summons flying monkeys from tattoos on her cleavage. It should be the most ridiculous thing in the world, but it works.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Glitch's flashback of his lobotomy.
    • The first Wicked Witch. "You can let go, little girl..."
  • Retroactive Recognition: If you can see past the mustache and bowler hat, you might notice Cain is "Dum Dum" Dugan! He was already known for Band of Brothers, but would become a more famous character actor afterwards.
  • Vanilla Protagonist: DG is the Naïve Everygirl like the original Dorothy Gale - brought from the human world to the OZ and thus experiencing the more colourful supporting cast through her perspective.
  • The Woobie: Take your pick:
    • Glitch, for having half his brain removed.
    • Cain, for being in an And I Must Scream prison.
    • Azkadelia, who was possessed by an evil witch, and was then helpless to do anything as the witch then took over and killed everyone.
