YMMV / The Solve-It Squad Returns!

Go To

  • Actor Shipping: Even people who don't buy Esther and Scrags as a couple in-universe at all still found moments to Squee over just as fan of Lauren and Joey's relationship, like Lauren putting her head on Joey's shoulder with Puppy-Dog Eyes (when Esther and Keith try to get Scrags to do the "sandwich trick"), or Lauren repeatedly falling backwards and letting Joey catch her.
    • There was also some jokey Actor Shipping of Gabe Greenspan and Brian Rosenthal based on the "chemistry" Keith has with Camille Fitzgerald, including the two of them getting a Big Damn Kiss right after Keith and Gwen do.
  • Awesome Music: Even though this show only really has one song, "The Solve-It Squad" and its reprise "Back in Biz", fans still rate this show pretty highly as a "musical" because of just how catchy and memorable that song is thanks to the songwriting skills of Nick Gage, which perfectly encapsulates the '60s Surf Rock vibe of Scooby-Doo while being awesomely distinct in its own right. (In a highly thematically appropriate deviation from the Scooby-Doo theme, it's a Theme Tune Roll Call that awesomely gives each human member of the Solve-It Squad a chance to introduce themselves and establish their personality in one verse.)
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The show's Aesop that all of the members of the Squad matter and they were all suffering for feeling like "the outsider" in the group is extra harsh if you know your Scooby-Doo history, in which Fred, Velma and Daphne were Adapted Out entirely for much of The '80s (the "Scrappy era") because fans really only wanted to see the talking dog(s). The show is arguably satirizing the fan hatred of this era in hindsight by pulling a role reversal, imagining a version of the Scooby-Doo universe where the talking dog is adapted out so the human characters (especially Esther/Velma) can get the credit they deserve, with Keith's "And it's better without him!" almost word-for-word echoing fan sentiments when Scrappy was scrapped with A Pup Named Scooby-Doo in 1988.
    • The gag where Cole the bellhop coughs all over Scrags' face and then helpfully says "I'm sorry! Be sure to wash your face, this is a nasty virus!" hits a lot harder after the COVID-19 Pandemic.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Esther's "Werewolves aren't real" comment is this after the release of Tin Can Brothers' Wayward Guide for the Untrained Eye (especially since the entire Solve-It Squad cast is in it, and the podcast implies a Shared Universe between the two).
  • LGBT Fanbase: A big reason for this show's following is the explicit canonization of Esther/Velma being into women, as well as the hints that she's neurodivergent in some way, probably with ADHD. Fans also very frequently headcanon Scrags as a trans man (because of the Inopportune Voice Cracking) and possibly asexual.
  • One True Pairing: Even though most of Esther's fans are especially big fans of her being explicit lesbian representation, and it's very popular to headcanon Scrags as ace, fans of this show who do indulge in shipping universally ship Scrags and Esther together (and assume Esther is actually bisexual). Even the ones who don't buy the romantic ship tend to find Scrags and Esther's friendship the most compelling one in the show. The Actor Shipping between Joey Richter and Lauren Lopez also helps a lot.
  • Romantic Plot Tumor: Done intentionally with Keith and Gwen, making fun of the Fred/Daphne ship that took up so much space after the 2002 live-action film made it canon. Even the extremely shipping-focused Tumblr fandom finds Scrags and Esther's eyerolling at Keith and Gwen's bullshit highly relatable (which, ironically, is a major factor in wanting to ship Scrags and Esther with each other).
  • Squick: The glorious moment when we find out what the Gas Station Attendant found so horrifying about his stay at the Mayberry Gardens Hotel and Spa.
Gas Station Attendant: There was just so much, so much...
    Scrags: What?
    Esther: Pain?
    Gwen: Blood?
    Scrags: Death?
    Gas Station Attendant: JIIIIIIIIIZZ!
Esther: Well, that was my next guess.
Gas Station Attendant: All over the sheets. Just caked in semen, you hear?!
