YMMV / The Simpsons S 9 E 14 Das Bus

Go To

  • Bizarro Episode: The whole episode is a Lord of the Flies parody set on a tropical island, and ends with James Earl Jones saying there isn't really an ending, so let's just say Moe saved them.
  • Franchise Original Sin: This was the first episode (with the possible exception of "Homer Loves Flanders" back in Season 5) to have a deliberately abrupt Ass Pull ending as opposed to a real conclusion. It works here as part of the Lord of the Flies homage and because the actual story arc was still more or less wrapped up, but later episodes like "Missionary Impossible" and "The Great Money Caper" would abuse this trope in a way that resulted in an abrupt, unsatisfying Gainax Ending that slammed the brakes on the episode's momentum.
  • Genius Bonus: Pork snout is highly sought after by gourmands due to how tender it is, something someone as cultured as Martin would be aware of.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Several years before Lost premiered, we have people stuck on an island with a boar that's mistaken for a monster.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "In conclusion, X is a land of contrastsnote ", usually said when a discussion about X proves X to more complicated or nuanced than originally thought, or if the discussion has gone on for too long.
    • Bill Gates destroying Homer's "office". Marge's line "Homer, Bill Gates is here." often shows up out of context in a similar fashion.
    • Ralph's lines; "Go banana!" and "They taste like burning".
    • "And then they were rescued by...oh, let's say Moe" has become quite a fad in the comments of Dark Simpsons videos when offering a way out of the...well, dark situations.
    • "Zeppelin rules..."
  • Misblamed: The episode is often criticized for its abrupt ending that says the kids were rescued offscreen, when this is actually another nod to Lord of the Flies, which ended in a similarly abrupt manner (though the rescue was at least an actual scene).
  • One-Scene Wonder: James Earl Jones providing the ending narration, with the line "Eventually, they were rescued by... oh, let's say Moe." standing out.
