YMMV / The Magic Roundabout (2005)

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: While the show did air in the United States back in the 1980s as The Magic Carousel as part of Pinwheel, it largely flew under the radar (to where a good chunk is considered to be lost media). Hence most Americans are likely more familiar with the 2005 film, which was released in the US by The Weinstein Company. Unfortunately, the film would end up tainting the brand's reputation in the US thanks to the now infamous American redub.
  • Americans Hate Tingle: This applies more to the film than the original TV show (as Americans have no real knowledge of the show), but while the 2005 film received merely mixed reviews in the UK, the American cut of the film was widely panned by Americans when it came over to the states in 2006.
  • Awesome Music: Both versions of the film have great soundtracks loaded with classic '70s pop hits. Special mention goes to Kylie Minogue's delightful rendition of the original theme song.
  • Bile Fascination: While the original movie didn't have much reason to check it out, the infamy of the Same Language Dub pushes it to a major curiosity for most people who watch it today.
  • Complete Monster (original French version and UK dub): Zeebad ruled over the world as a frozen wasteland in the distant past, until he was defeated by Zebedee and imprisoned for 10,000 years. Zeebad is accidentally released and begins his plan to collect three magic diamonds to freeze the sun and cover the world in an Endless Winter. Zeebad also brings life to a wooden toy soldier named Sam and makes him his minion. Zeebad kidnaps Dougal and orders Sam to torture him for information, but when Dougal is rescued he faces Zeebad and wins, pushing him off a cliff to kill him. Zeebad steals the first gem and forces them to give up the map by threatening to eat Brian. When Zeebad's train crashes and Sam is injured, Zeebad abandons Sam without a second thought. Sam later confronts Zeebad, and Zeebad realizes that the gem is in him, so he kills Sam and takes the diamond out of him, beginning his plan to freeze the world and nearly succeeding.
  • Designated Hero: Dougal, as explained by DazzReviews:
"Doogal is the worst character in this film. Everything is caused by his addiction to sugar. He unseals Zeebad, he asks for dinner, he doesn't make a tent, he keeps his own food, he gets kidnapped, he reveals information when getting rewarded, he calls himself leader when pushed onto the bridge, is cowardly against the traps, he activates the lasers, causes the lasers to be hit after Ermintrude's whole uncharacteristic movement, he presses one button that saves the day, and then again loses the gems, and he headbutts a gem right at the end, not paying off any skill he didn't have before hand, and suddenly he's the hero! And he's still got a sugar addiction, he never developped at all!"
  • Macekre: The American redub. The original movie was already in English, and even though the original series it was based off of had only been released once in the States (for Pinwheel), it still makes one only wonder why The Weinstein Company decided to change all but two of the character's voices (and even then, one had to redub her lines in an American accent), cram in a ton of pop-culture references (at times, there were barrages of references), and edit the hell out of the original movie. Critics and audiences reviewed it as well as you'd expect.
  • So Bad, It's Good: For some, the American version. The hilariously unfitting pop culture references, gratuitous silence-filling and obnoxious voice acting make for an experience that has to be seen to be believed.
  • So Okay, It's Average: The original version of the movie; it's seen as an okay and serviceable movie, but nothing really special, which makes it less entertaining than the American dub.
  • Tear Dryer: Near the end of the film, after Dougal and his friends managed to re-imprison Zeebad by placing three diamonds on the roundabout, they all celebrate until Dougal asks about Florence and they immediately fall silent as they turn to Mr. Rusty, Basil and Coral trying to wake Florence up, who is seemingly lifeless and appears to have died due to the freezing conditions of the frozen roundabout. As everyone looks on with complete sadness, Dougal tearfully begs Florence to wake up. Then, when he licks her face as he begins to mourn for her, Florence begins to move again to everyone's surprise. This prompts Dougal to revive Florence by continuing to lick her face until she fully wakes up to everyone and Dougal's relief and joy before Florence thanks Dougal for saving her life and those who are trapped on the roundabout.
