- Better on DVD: Due to the concept of the film, it is arguably MUCH scarier watching it home alone (preferably at night) than when watching it in a theater.
- Critic-Proof: Despite terrible reviews (a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes) it grossed nearly $50 million worldwide.
- Critical Backlash: Now that the heat from the Based on a Great Big Lie stigma has died down, many are more receptive to the film as simply a work of fiction with some effective scares. There are among several positive reviews saying to the effect of "it may be fake but..."
- Overshadowed by Controversy: The film's negative reviews always included a note about the made-up facts, or using simple disappearances as grounding for UFO sightings.
- Paranoia Fuel: You could be getting abducted by aliens regularly, and your memories of the event are erased each time.
- She Really Can Act: Even people who didn't like the film felt Milla Jovovich delivered a great performance - especially outside her usual range of action heroines. Roger Ebert gave the film only one star, but still praised her performance.
- Spiritual Adaptation: With it's Cosmic Horror Story overtones, alien beings that border on Eldritch Abomination, use of Apocalyptic Log, and Downer Ending, this movie manages to really catch the feel of what a Cthulhu Mythos movie would be like when done properly.
