YMMV / Pelswick

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The aesop structure doesn't even try to be subtle, which turns off some people, but others don't mind because the messages themselves aren't overdone.
  • Audience-Alienating Premise: The show failed to find much of an audience due to taking too many risks at once (disabled protagonist, Fantastic Comedy universe, and unconventional art style from a cartoonist with some very edgy works under his name) and because many of the jokes were too mature and went over the head of the target audience, particularly the ones about political correctness, while many of the older audience members were turned off by the Aesop-based structure.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Why would Jimmy give cryptic advice rather than straight forward advice? Because Pelswick is a self-sufficient kid despite, or because of, his wheelchair and would render the entire series a Broken Aesop if he was just given the answers straight-up.
  • Vindicated by History: For the longest time, Pelswick's reputation was marred by the fact that it was one of Nickelodeon's least successful series and an apparent refusal by Nick or Nelvana to promote the show, but as awareness and discourse surrounding society's treatment of the disabled has grown, the show is starting to be looked back on much more fondly for its strong anti-ableism message and is now considered by many to be one of the most progressive shows of its time.
