YMMV / Jreg

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Was Nazi unaware that he was part-Jewish before Conservative proved it to him? Did he suspect it on some level? Or did he know it the whole time?
    • Did Ancap go to the Overton Window to rescue Libertarian from the Centrists because of a genuine friendship with him? Because he refused to let his one good deed go to waste? Because he hated the idea of Libertarian becoming a Neo-Liberal? Because he thought he could make more money that way?
    • Did Conservative save Nazi because as a a Christian he believed every soul could be saved? Or because he needed Nazi’s allegiance to protect his ideology? Did he actually believe that discovering he was Jewish would make Nazi less racist or was he just in denial about it?
    • Does Ancom actually care about the minorities qui claims to protect or is qui just giving quemself an excuse for violence?
    • Does Tankie genuinely believe real communism has never been tried, or is he just saying that for PR reasons?
    • Does Jreg really believe that Accelerationism is a good thing or is jre just out to wreak havoc??
    • Is Radical Centrist a Well-Intentioned Extremist who believes the end justifies the means or does he just want power?
    • Is Greg Guevara (in-universe) really unaware that jre’s controlled by four ghosts or is jre obfuscating stupidity?
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees:
    • Since Hoppeanism is a fairly obscure ideology, there have been quite a few people who think Hoppean's ideas are something Jreg made up. In truth, Hans-Hermann Hoppe is a German-American philosopher who does indeed hold to something resembling these views (even if they are exaggerated by Jreg).
    • While the idea of a gay Nazi seems ridiculous, there were historic Nazis who were gay (most notably Ernst Röhm, though it's worth noting he and most other gay Nazis were purged by the regime early on).
  • Archive Panic: Given that jris channel is constantly evolving and going through self-described "Jreras", and that the videos only barely make sense by themselves, trying to chronologically go through the channel's history from political absurdism to mental health absurdism to framework existentialism to the Ottawexit and beyond can take a few dedicated days of watching, and that's not even counting jris dedicated web series like Centricide.
  • Awesome Music: Jre usually has one of these for each videos jre makes, especially the political extremist rap.
  • Broken Base:
    • Inverted, as Jreg actually does have fans from all political quadrants, who while not agreeing on anything else, agree that jris anti centrist videos are awesome. Any actual fandom infighting is more likely to result from shipping the ideologies together which due to it all logically ending up as Ho Yay, provokes a reaction from jris Authoritarian Right fans, and even them some of those fans are down with it only for the absurdism.
      • That said, the fandom is broken in terms of where it amasses. The Twitter community is mostly dominated by leftists, the Jreg subreddit is liberal and left-libertarian leaning (though both Twitter and the subreddit are home to most of the Ho Yay fanart), while the more right-wing segments of the fandom generally congregate on the Discord server. The Youtube comment section is the most neutral ground.
      • Jreg has acknowledged the left-libertarian bias of jris subreddit on centrist occasions and lamented it's not technically in the spirit of anti-centrism (as opposed to the Political Compass Memes subreddit), but acknowledged that it leaning authoritarian could get it banned for actual hate speech and dictatorship apologia. The anti-centrism subreddit is another attempt at a more unified userbase.
    • The creation of The Mental Illnesses caused a lot of division. Throughout the fanbase as a whole, certain sections saw it as a natural progression of jris former content, others declared it as tasteless and harmful, and others missed JrEg's political content and saw the shift in topic as a step down. The series caused a substantial amount of divide in specifically the Twitter fandom where many denounced it.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
JrEg: World War II blew everyone away... especially the Japanese!
    • Ancap does it in his introduction in the "Political Compass Rap", when he's on the phone, trying to buy a child prostitute:
I keep telling you, it's not pedophilia, it's ephebophilia. ... Oh, she's only fourteen? Guess it is pedophilia. Still it's one dollar off, right?
  • Diagnosed by the Audience:
    • Ancom’s short temper, drug abuse and black-and-white thinking can't help but lead one to suspect he may have Borderline Personality Disorder.
    • In "Anarchist Infighting", Post-Left Anarchist's personality - quer inability to reconcile quer identity, quer moodiness, losing momentum when que tries to assault AnFash for his fascistic ideals and lack of self-esteem - all resemble symptoms of clinical depression.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Minarchist. He has two lines in the entire series, both of which say little about his personality. Despite this, the fandom has crafted a Wide-Eyed Idealist, Token Good Teammate persona and commonly feature the night-watchman state in fanworks. One cannot portray Ancapistan without including Minarchist.
  • Fanfic Fuel: With the sheer number of different ideologies (in-practice, theoretical, wacky, etc.) out there, there are far too many for Jreg to properly represent in jris videos and some of jris fans have taken to making their own. Christian Anarchism, Green Anarchism, Green Liberalism, Queer Communism, etc. Basically socio-political Sailor Earths.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Anarkiddy for Anarchist Left. It has also been used in the show.
    • "Blueman" for Nazi. It's used on platforms where users cannot say "nazi" or where saying it puts your account in danger.
  • Fashion-Victim Villain: Radical Centrist becomes this when the Centricide officially begins, donning tacky glasses and a cotton-candy pink and blue robe. His One-Winged Angel form Radical Radical Centrist is even worse, combining all the features of the other centrists into a hilariously ugly costume.
  • Genius Bonus:
    • In "The Conquest Of Bread || Centricide 2.5", Ancap declares that he will "go Hoppean on all of their (Ancom and Commie) asses" when they take his bread, and then immediately tries to get Nazi to do it for him. To those not in the know, Hoppeanism (a form of paleolibertarianism) is a libertarian-right ideology that believes in laissez-faire capitalism (as opposed to Nazi, who is economically apathetic) combined with reactionary social values. What Hoppeanism is is essentially a reconciliation between authright's traditionalist stance and libright's idea of free market and property rights. Some even call Hoppeanism "Libertarian Fascism". So Ancap and Nazi (or Conservative and Libertarian) working together could metaphorically work as Hoppean praxis. It also helps that the personification of the ideology of Hoppeanism makes an actual appearance in "Ancapistan || Centricide 4.5" and his verse in "Welcome to Ancapistan" would make just as much sense if Nazi said them.
    • Conservative and Libertarian get a lot of Pet the Dog moments in Centricide 4 while Socialist and Progressive are killed with little to no development. Given that Jreg has a background in a conservative Christian school, this may be jris way of communicating jris sympathy with these ideologies given that amongst the extremes jre subjects Nazi to Token Evil Teammate (especially since Youtube cracks down on pro far-right content).
    • In "Ancapistan || Centricide 4.5", Minarchist is portrayed as the Token Good Teammate of the Ancapistanians, his solo portion of the Ancapistan song emphasizing the more positive aspects of Ancapistan and he declares that the residents of Ancapistan look out for each other. He is also the only right-libertarian character to not show active disdain for the cripplingly poor. This might be inspired by the fact that minarchist philosopher Robert Nozick towards the end of his career recanted some of his more radically libertarian right positions though this is unlikely considering that Minarchism is characterized in-universe as being a more extreme version of Libertarianism that doesn’t go as far as Anarcho-Capitalism as Ancap suggests that Libertarian meet him in the middle by becoming a Minarchist and Anti-Extremist says that bleeding Ancap’s extremist out of him will transform him into a Minarchist then a Libertarian and then a Neo-Liberal.
    • Not only does the revelation that Nazi is actually half-Jewish make him a hypocrite, but so does the fact that his other half is Basque, since Basques aren't Indo-European. They are white like the Hungarians and Estonians are though, but like them fall into a "non-aryan" category.
    • Mutualism(s) is depicted as kinda fading in and out of existence and is referred to in the plural. Queer Anarchism at one point claims no one even knows who he is. Mutualism in reality, in addition to being a fairly fringe ideology, has a range of belief systems-for instance, Pierre Joseph Proudhon's own brand is more traditionally socialist while Benjamin Tucker's was almost egoist. And Kevin Carson's contemporary strain of mutualism welds Tucker's thought with a core influenced by right-libertarian Austrian economics (while still rejecting capitalism as being a product of the state). Mutualism(s) has too many strains to have a firm appearance and additionally is embodying multiple ideologies.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Commie and "Anarkiddie" share probably the closest bond of all Centricide characters, they sing a duo that can very well be interpreted as romantic, Commie tries to rescue Ancom from being killed and turned Post-Left, and when he fails, he's clearly very defeated and distraught at the thought of having lost his comrade. Later in "Posthumanism || Centricide 8 (Part 2/3)", when Ancom returns to quis old self and saves Commie from being stepped on, Commie's face lights up as the brief scene is accompanied by "Love Theme" from Tchaikovsky's Romeo & Juliet, a stock piece of music usually applied to scenes of people either falling in love or lovers reuniting.
    • Since Commie and Nazi joined forces to defeat the horseshoe centrist in Centricide 5, they've been getting a lot more shipping attention as well.
    • Libertarian and Ancap have also gotten a lot of shipping behind them.
  • Idiosyncratic Ship Naming: Ancom/Commie is commonly called "Left(ist) Unity." Nazi/Ancap is commonly called "Right(ist) Unity." Nazi/Commie is commonly called "Auth[oritarian] Unity."
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Jres "Shut The Fuck Up" video is a popular video to use as a reaction.
    • "Complete the World War Trilogy", especially in light of the World War III scare in January 2020 after the U.S. launched an airstrike that killed Iranian general Qasem Soleimani.
    • "Good one, Jreg. You show those (insert group here) who's boss." A repeated quote from jris "Amazon™ Crowbar" video.
    • "I'm a lot like Joker / From the movie Joker"Explanation.
  • Misaimed Fandom: Subverted. A significant portion of jris audience legitimately hates centrism, though they're aware of the satirical nature of jris content. Another number of jris leftist fans also hold jrem as a "Breadtuber" or "Leftuber" even though other Leftist fans point out that jre doesn't belong in the category as jris videos are about satirizing all ideologies and beliefs, and actually fail to promote Leftism which isn't jris intent.
  • Periphery Demographic: Inverted. A large part of Jreg's fame is that much like the Political Compass meme fandom, jris satire manages to appeal to multiple political views as opposed to having a certain demographic in mind, unlike most political satire. It helps that Jreg is well researched on even obscure ideologies and mocks them in ways that proponents of those ideologies do for Self-Deprecation jokes. Jris appeal is certainly part of the Intended Audience Reaction.
  • Shallow Parody: in the video “People do not Change their Minds:Change My Mind” which is either an affectionate parody of or a Take That! towards Steven Crowder, Jreg comments that if the people jre challenged to change jris mind made any good points then jre would have just edited their dialogue out of the video. Steven Crowder has always emphasized the unedited nature of the Change My Mind dialogues and almost on principle refuses to do what Jreg described. (Crowder has criticized Fox News for editing their debates and in one instance had a Pro-Choice student with whom he debated on the subject of abortion in “I’m Pro-Life: Change My Mind” appear on his show for an interview asking her to confirm that he in no way edited her out of context. And he live-streamed his “Socialism is Evil: Change My Mind” video on YouTube to prove it wasn’t edited. Indeed, the most common adjective Crowder uses in relation to his Change My Mind series is probably “unedited.”
  • Shocking Moments: It's revealed in Centricide 6 that Nazi, who has spent his entire life hating Jews and denying the holocaust is himself part Jewish, and either didn't realize this or was fervently denying it.
  • Tear Jerker: Now has its own page.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Since monarchism is a very old ideology that still holds a good deal of sway and influence today, one would be forgiven for thinking a "Monarchist" character would play a major role in Centricide. But Monarchist only appears in "Leftist Infighting", even though Anarcho-Monarchist is fairly prominent as a member of the Council of Wacky Ideologies. Naturally, some fans have expressed disappointment that he didn't get to play a larger part in the series.
  • Trans Audience Interpretation: BPD being non-binary. The headcanon began when fans realized Anxiety refers to BPD as "they" in the first episode, which would be BPD's only appearance and their only use of pronouns for the next couple episodes. Some speculated BPD would be revealed to be canonically nonbinary, as it fits with having an unstable sense of self, a common symptom of BPDnote .
