YMMV / Gaturro

Go To

  • Anvilicious: Remember: love your neighbor, love yourself, be happy no matter what, and reading is good for children!
  • Critic-Proof: Gaturro is easily one of the most hated and more poorly received comic strips out there and you would have a hard time finding anyone online that has anything postive to say about the comics. That doesn't stop it from being a major franchise in Argentina and being popular enough to justify a movie, an animated series, a MMO game and books collections being released to this day.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: In 2023, the fence that tried to protect Gaturro's second statue has quickly become a fan-favorite character, with many vandals who sabotaged Gaturro unanimously deciding to not damage the fence.
  • Fandom Rivalry:
    • Due to Nik plagiarizing Quino's strips, the series has a huge grudge against the Mafalda comic fandom and author, with the late Quino openly expressing his disdain for Gaturro and Nik during his lifetime.
    • Naturally, with Garfield, as both comics feature sarcastic orange cats.
  • Memetic Loser: The incidents involving the vandalization of Gaturro's statues mixed with Nik still trying to keep the statues has lead to Gaturro being portrayed in memes as a 0% Approval Rating Butt-Monkey that still somehow believes to be more popular that he actually is. His reputation as a inferior copy of Garfield (who has a Memetic Psychopath reputation online) doesn't help.
  • Memetic Mutation: Everything revolving around vandalizing Gaturro statues and joking about how fast the statues get vandalized and taken down.
    • "Tecnología antivandálica" Explanation
    • "Don't Damage the fence/Avenge the fence" Explanation
    • "El Pijurro"Explanation
  • Overshadowed by Controversy:
    • Gaturro's author Nik is highly infamous in the graphic humor community due to his many accusations of plagiarism, largely from Argentinian artists, with many of them having expressed disdain against him, including Mafalda's author Quino. Many of the alleged plagiarism cases were collected in a PDF file dubbed the "black book" of Nik.
    • It's difficult not to talk about Gaturro without mentioning the infamous vandalization of his statue at the Paseo de la Historieta in Buenos Aires, which although it was installed in 2013, it was not until 2021 that it began to be vandalized. It got to such a degree that it became a meme online, and the statue was removed in 2022. A second statue was installed in its place in 2023, and it took less than one day for it to be vandalized to the same level as well.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: By far the biggest criticism towards the strip is that it tends to copy and paste characters, jokes and situations from other strips. In some cases failing to see the point or context of the original joke leading to it not translating the joke well and make it even more of a blatant plagiarism. The title character itself is seen by many as a Poor Man's Substitute Expy of Garfield.
  • Unfortunate Character Design: A common joke about Gaturro is how his giant cheeks make his face look a butt or testicles.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: The designs in the comic strips were never particulary attractive but they worked alright for the strip. Now translating those same designs in to a All-CGI Cartoon for The Movie? Not the best idea.
