YMMV / Friday Night Funkin' HD

  • Awesome Art: The game lives up to its name by having a pretty damn good high definition art-style.
  • Broken Base: This mod features gratuitous use of Black Comedy and Vulgar Humor, taking influence from old-school Newgrounds content. Is it hilarious in an over-the-top manner, or does the humor not really land and becomes offensive and uncomfortable?
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • Nene being homophobic? A bit unexpected and might ruffle some feathers. Nene actually being literally homophobic? Unexpectedly hilarious. Nene jumping out of the top of the building just to escape, with Darnell lampshading how many times she's committed suicide? Black Comedy at its finest. And Pico implies that Boyfriend was perfectly aware that she would react like that.
    • Nene returns for one line and one line only in Week 5. And what does she say? "Fuck an escalator! I could just fall faster", and proceeds to do exactly that, obviously dying in the process. Darnell points out this is her eleventh death and says the n-word. And her corpse is laying there during "Eggnog".
    • During the middle of the otherwise horrifying "Winter Horrorland", Girlfriend's headless corpse drops to the floor in the middle of it, followed by Monster cheerfully singing "La-la, la-la!".
  • Common Crossover: It is common for other mods to be drawn in HD’s style, such as VS Sky, VS Cassandra and Vs. Flippy: Flipped Out!. Kolsan even drew Soul Boyfriend in the HD style, which both Phantom Fear and PincerProd approved.
  • Nightmare Fuel: All of "Winter Horrorland", besides the moment described in Crosses the Line Twice. While his Week 2 song was pretty unnerving, it certainly didn't reach the terrifying levels that "Winter Horrorland" did.
    • Girlfriend's head on the Christmas tree is her actual, rather bloodied head, as Monster decapitated her. Even worse, her decapitated corpse is still moving at the rhythm of the song until it drops to the floor.
    • Throughout the entire song, Boyfriend has reached the Despair Event Horizon with a broken look during it. What's worse is the presence of a toxic gas that'll constantly drain Boyfriend's health throughout the song. It even drains before Monster even starts to sing, and by the time it's your turn, you are about to lose, meaning he has the advantage over you throughout the entire song.
    • The Remix Update gives the song an extra layer of unsettling by adding whispering voices in the beginning, possibly belonging to Monster's previous victims.
      "He has found you..."
"You can run, but you won't escape..."
      "Your soul is his..."
      "Everyone you love is dead."
"YOU CAN'T RUN! YOU CAN'T RUN! YOU CAN'T RUN!"
  • Squick: The mod amps up the sex jokes from the original game, but it goes past the point of disturbing when Mommy Mearest rears her head, with her quite clearly and shamelessly lusting after the Boyfriend right in front of the Girlfriend, all while her talk-sprite looks like she's orgasming on the spot. If that doesn't make you uncomfortable enough, don't worry, she spends the following song staring at him with a similar look. The fact that she gets away with all this and does it again the following week makes for a very difficult playing experience.
  • That One Level:
    • This version of "M.I.L.F." manages to be this even moreso than the original, thanks to the streetlights introduced in "High" (which force you to press space when you hear a whistle blow) returning and the lightning bolt notes Mommy Mearest zaps at Boyfriend. Unlike Pico's bullets, miss even one lightning note, and it's back to the beginning of the song for you. Same goes for the final streetlight at the very end.
    • Surprisingly enough, "Winter Horrorland" of all songs can be this. While it was a very easy song in the original that relied more on shock value than difficulty, here Monster is constantly draining Boyfriend's health throughout the song, and said draining starts as soon as the song starts. As a result, Monster basically has the advantage over Boyfriend for almost the entirety of the song, and the player is given little to no room for error when it comes to hitting the notes.
  • Unexpected Character: Let's face it. Who here expected Sonic the Hedgehog to get a week in this mod?
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: Do not let Sonic's appearance fool you. While Friday Night Funkin' already had this issue with its Periphery Demographic, this Game Mod amps up the originals mature themes and dark humor with the added dialogue and scenarios, reminiscent of content early in Newgrounds' history. Doubly true for Week 4, which makes this blatantly apparent with its heavier sexual themes that made the vanilla game seem far lighter by comparison.
