YMMV / Decline of Video Gaming

Go To

  • Growing the Beard: The jokes in the first installment can feel rather stiff after you've seen everything that came afterward.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The joke of Hideo Kojima being imprisoned because of the negative reception of Metal Gear Solid 2 isn't as funny now when you consider his ultimate treatment by Konami.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The series "predicted" Old Snake years before he showed up.
    • Anything in the first one, most notably how the prologue mentions that games become more story based and that replay value goes up by 250%. Sadly, the latter is not for the story.
    • A Self-Deprecation joke involving the trio watching a Japanese version of the videos and Dim making a comment regarding how a TV show revolving around bad games is a terrible concept for a show in light of the rise in popularity of shows revolving around bad video games around the late 2000s-early 2010s.
    • One joke has them delivering a Take That! against the Nintendo DS (which literally gets tossed in the trash) while being unable to find anything to criticize about the PlayStation Portable. It comes across as them jumping the gun in criticizing the Nintendo DS considering it would gradually build up a big catalog of well-received games and become both the best-selling Nintendo console and the second best-selling console period after the PlayStation 2.
    • Their dig at the Devil May Cry series, "Devil May Cry 4: Who Wrote This Crap?", falls a bit flat when one considers that both 3 and 4 were rather highly acclaimed, while the 2nd (which they were referencing) fell into Fanon Discontinuity, and has been edging closer to Canon Discontinuity.
  • Retroactive Recognition: The voice cast includes other flash animators including Arin "Egoraptor" Hanson and Ross "Rubberninja" O'Donovan. Years later, both of them would become much more well known for their shows Game Grumps and Steam Train.
    • Egoraptor's roles in this series actually predate Metal Gear Awesome by a year or two. He was already well known on Newgrounds at the time.
    • Rubberninja does the voice of the PC World announcer in the Christmas Special. His ninja persona can be seen in the outtakes for that animation. He also appears in Decline 2, right after the cast walks into E3, where he can be seen in the background trying to pick up a woman. It doesn't go well for him.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: While it couldn't always have been an accurate look at the future of gaming, the original having it just be like it was when it was released but worse provides a look into what gaming culture was like in the early 2000s.
