YMMV / Dark Age of Camelot

Go To

  • Alt-itis: Not initially, as leveling up was originally really hard. Some time around 2007, Mythic made it much easier to level, so much that one can reach the Level Cap of 50 in a few days. As such, most players will have a ton of different characters.
  • Cut and Paste Environments: All the "old world" (i.e before any expansion packs) dungeons use the same three or four tilesets, likely due to technical limitations at the time.
  • Game-Breaker: The convoker master level 9 spell "Summon mastery". Its a buff that make your pet WAY more powerful for about 6 minutes, allowing you to solo purple (read: you should have no chance of beating this guy solo) monsters.
  • Genius Bonus: Naming England Albion after it's oldest known name is quite clever. Midgard was the name of Earth in Norse Mythology and considering Vikings originated in Scandinavia so it fits. However the game creators stated they chose Rule of Cool by calling Ireland Hibernia and not Ériu or Éire.
  • Memetic Mutation: "YOU FUCKING STOLE MY CLOUDSONG!"
  • Obvious Beta: The Hibernia realm was notoriously unfinished at the time of the game's release. Some of the dungeons weren't even open, most notably the Coruscating Mines. It took about a year and a half before all of the dungeons were opened and populated.
  • Spiritual Successor:
    • The game is one to the MMO Darkness Falls — and the major PvP dungeon is named after it.
    • The developer went on to do Warhammer Online, and most DAoC veterans instantly felt right at home.
    • There's also a reboot called Camelot Unchained currently in the works.
    • Additionally, The Elder Scrolls Online has three-faction PvP that is easily comparable in general setup to the Realm vs Realm combat. This is especially the case since some of that game's talent developed this game. The PvE experience is different, with standards in questing inspired by World of Warcraft.
  • That One Level: Treibh Callaite in Hibernia. Mainly due to a very odd and confusing teleporter system. To wit: each teleporter has a (non aggressive) golem standing on it. To teleport you must kill the golem and then stand on the teleporter till it respawns about a minute later, at which point you are teleported. To make things worse, each teleporter has two possible destinations, and if you are doing the quest to kill all the bosses you will need to go to both locations for both teleporters (which place you teleport to is random so you may have to try several times before you arrive at the right place.)
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The Trials of Atlantis expansion introduced master levels that had a host of repercussions in the PvP side of things, some of which are so despised that there are "Classic"-flavoured servers.
